1. don&amp't think I'm the best possible recipient for these. I am interested in trying out different strings, but am generally interested in more exotic fare than nickle roundwounds. However, if nobody else claims them after a reasonable length of time, I'll have them.
2. Up until late last year I was putting equal emphasis on g**t*r and bass. Now I'm not. I've found a re-use for guitars I have - as tuned in all-fourths tuning, like a bass, that I can use guitars to achieve higher ranges without buying a 10 string bass or something. While I always use a pick on the guitar, but usually play bass fingerstyle, I play it very much like a bass, just using higher notes. I'm finding uses for other bits too. One of my basses, a Rockbass Streamer standard, is nice to play now that I've fiddled with the setup until I found something suitable except it has a bit too much clank (I may put tapewound strings on it). But, the pickups aren't strong enough. And the tone control isn't very useful. I've got a bid on ebay on a Behringer BDI21, but then I spotted a Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 lying around. It's got a pre-amp and four-band EQ, so I thought why not give it a go. It certainly gives the Streamer a lot of output, as much as I need. And while the EQ doesn't change the fundamental nature of the sound, it certainly gives quite a lot of ability to shape the sound. I'm having a bit of difficulty getting a bass sound that's both strongly bassy but also well defined, but maybe I just need to play around with the gain and the EQ bands. Oh, and I used a Roland Microcube guitar (not bass) amp as a headphone amp for it. At one point, I cut all lows from the bass, turned the gain of the GV-2 up, and added delay and chorus via the microcube. A very useful 'heavy' sound which sounded good even on the open low B string. Anyone else re-using guitar bits for bassy purposes?
3. I like the natural look (no double entendre intended), but the sunburst one looks really nice too.
4. Jam session with random people!
5. This bass is very much fufilling its role as my inexpensive bass for work. I'm getting good sounds out of it, e.g. I put it through a multiband compressor with mondo compression on the low frequencies, then put it through a flanger. A very useful sound. It doesn't sound particularly distinctive, but overall its natural sound is nice, and it has a range of useful tones. After fiddling with the truss rod and bridge for some while, I've now got a setup that I like, and I'm finding it very playable. I've also discovered that it was the main bass of a basschatter for about five years. (Unless Fujigen has been reusing serial numbers )
6. When I saw the topic, an image of a bass without a neck popped into my mind.
7.
Went for the Jazz vintage in the end, it was rather good looking and I was after a jazz. Its on its way now so I will see what it is like!
Sunburst or natural?
8. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-BB350F-Fretless-Bass-/121300535601?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3e134931
Hi, i'm reluctantly selling my Yamaha Fretless Bass model BB350F (no longer made). It's a beautiful bass, great tones. Nice pick ups too with plenty of control over them. It's Lined so you can see where the frets would be but over time they have faded. I bought it around 1996 so it's coming up to it's 20th birthday....Jesus should I be writing stuff like that? Perhaps it's best that I don't sell in, I mean really i'm not going to get anything like what it's worth. It's pretty hard being a musician isn't it, I mean financially it is anyway......where was I? Oh yeh trying to talk you into buying something I don't actually want to sell. It's been gigged a lotttttt and has a few marks to show for it, plus string wear on the fretboard but all of this just adds to how lovely it is. I've shown the biggest mark on it in the picture but it's not actually visible when looking at the bass as it's tucked around the corner. Do you think accounts find it hard to sell their calculators? If you have any questions please feel free to ask, alternatively if you have any answers please feel free to share. Cheers and good luck.
9. Thanks, I'll get one of them. I can always buy a hand-crafted walnut wood kazoo at a later time.
10. Tanglewaters seem to be turning up cheaper and cheaper. This one is £140BIN http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Overwater-Tanglewood-STD-Plus-Bass-Guitar-/171273822827?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27e0b7226b How good are these instruments? I've heard good things about them. I've never tried one or seen one in real life, but I am very curious about them.
11. Believe it or not, this was a serious question. I was curious about having an instrument to 'lead' myself while improvising bass lines. Learning harmonica might distract me from bass, so I thought a kazoo might be worth a try. There's a company called "Elderly Instruments" in the US that sells a variety of kazoos, including some <kiOgon>Made in the USA,</kiOgon>http://elderly.com/search/elderly?terms=kazoos&x=8&y=9 Hohner make a kazoo, but it seems to be difficult to find.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chesbro-Music-KC50-Single-Hohner-Plastic/dp/B001OPEZYW Of course, they cost a lot less (only 63 pence) in the USA.http://www.guitarcenter.com/Hohner-Kazoo-420558-i1133577.gc If we want to make analogies from bass quality, then perhaps a Stagg kazoo isn't the best choice.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stagg-STAGG-plastic-Kazoo-1C-SR-HP/dp/B000OR2DBS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_w_h__5?ie=UTF8&refRID=1QB0RP3GCG6XEV8MY52M A further analogy from basses is that at any price point, a Yamaha is usually very good value for money and well designed. I've heard that extends across their very wide musical range. But, I had a check and it seems that Yamaha doesn't make a kazoo. These instruments mostly cost about £1.50-£4. I was just wondering whether if I was prepared to pay an order of magnitude more money than that, whether there was something around that was of a higher quality than the toys. Somebody in Germany called "Christalos Design" seems to fulfil the Jon Shuker role, with handmade zebrawood (and other woods) kazoos.https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/174178231/wooden-kazoo-kazoo-made-from-zebrano?utm_source=google&utm_medium=product_listing_promoted_en_gb&utm_campaign=music_low At £24 something plus presumably postage, they won't break the bank.
12.
Has anyone tried the Harley Benton PB-50 SB Vintage model, the one that is like the tele precision? It is calling me a bit, but so is the jazz. Really I would liek the 5 string Jazz/P bass, but I can't get on with that colour.
Look at the gear list of Tom1946 in the post just above yours. Given that he owns two Harley Bentons, some similar design Squiers, and a brace of real Fenders, Tom1946 is the guru of all things Harley Benton Fender copy.
13.
Did you watch to the end?
I did, but it's worktime so my concentration was elsewhere. I remember seeing the shop address at the end, but not the guy making the vocal sound effect.
14. This is a demo by a shop? The person playing sounds to me like he just can't be arsed. Later on when he starts slapping it sounds like he could have played the early part better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SadzPWZqptk
15.
This is correct.
It's correct, but the law is a minimum that the shop has to do. "Good customer relations" and "good business management" go beyond what the law requires.
I uploaded a set of prices to our website. Due to some quirk with decimal places, something that should be sold for £130 was listed at £13. Obviously some bright spark ordered loads at £13 to sell on. I apologised for the error and explained that I'd have to cancel and refund. They went mental about trading standards and false advertising. Funny thing was a guy in our warehouse saw it too and asked if he could have the lot at £13 to flog on Ebay! Cheeky bastard! You'd get a few sandwiches for £117! No Tesco big eat chicken and stuffing though, they're long gone, never to be seen again
I'm no lawyer, but I believe that there is a difference between a mistaken price that is obviously an error, and a mistaken price which is plausible. However, there is also the problem that the law allows the terms and conditions of online websites to delay the formal creation of a contract until ridiculously late in the process, e.g. even after the business has charged the card and sent an acceptance email.
16. I haven't signed up to his site, but I greatly appreciate his youtube videos. Some of it is just so simple, but it works. I found that with whole scales that I tend to fall into the same old same old rhythmical patterns over and over again. But, when I tried his 'simple patterns' lesson, it really helps to restrict the notes played, as you've got to do something with the rhythm, as you've only got two notes through some parts of that lesson. His description of the dangers of slap is also very interesting, and IMHO accurate. His lesson on 'The most important lesson you'll ever learn' is about learning itself, and it shows that he is someone who really understands what it is
17. Is it possible to buy a kazoo that is a proper instrument, not the cheap plastic or metal toys that you can buy from Amazon or ToysRUs? Would such an instrument have sound quality significantly higher than the toys? (if played properly)
18. There's a lot of older looking headstocks in there, of all different sorts. That 'Wariawick' bass looks a bit strange - but I like it
19. Flippity fiip flip? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Epiphone-ET-280-Vintage-70s-Electric-Bass-Guitar-Matsumoku-Japan-1970-1975-/291105829515?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c742728b
20. I'm guessing that this is an early Korean made AP2. Is it? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item417e244e6e The more recent Arias with the slightly old-style headstock like the SB40 seem to have a thinner headstock (left to right), while this looks more like a Japanese era headstock. But, it looks too new to me to be Japanese.
21. Faker than a fake thing then. Odd to fake an OLP. When I looked at OLP selling prices recently, I was surprised to see how little they go for some of the time.
22. Interesting point. It's definitely cut more sharply than the OLPs I just googled.
23. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item338c49dcb1
Currently not working as fitted a new pick up but haven't got round to wiring it up, as haven't had the time, and have a large collection to choose from.
Could be a bargain. But surely if is a simple job of wiring in the pickup, the seller would have done it.
24. His/her listings say that if anyone doesn't follow all those directions then ebay will automatically open an unpaid item dispute on his/her behalf I'm sure that ebay doesn't 'automatically' open unpaid item disputes. And he/she would have no defence against a buyer who them pays by paypal, even if the T/C state cash only.
