I'm a fingers player. I use pick from time to time when needed, but I like what fingers can do. Then again, I'm a flats player pretty much exclusively too. However, I would say that trying both fingers and pick is definitely the way to go - give them both a good try and work on both - they both have their place and they will together make you a rounded player -
The thing to remember about Precisions like this, is that back in the late 50's and early 60's Precisions were mass produced bolt together run of the mill basses for the working bass player. They weren't high end super duper custom crafted instruments. The price of a pre-cbs P doesn't reflect this heritage any more. The roadworn, however, is bang on this theme - it's a good value solid working bass with a proven design built to the same formula that Leo came up with in 57.
-
I'll go further than that. If you want the real deal and that vintage vibe, for me, the order is: 1. Proper pre-cbs 2. Roadworn 3. AVRI And the gap between 1 and 2 is probably that 5%... between 2 and 3, it's more like 10%. When you consider the money you pay for a roadworn compared to 1 or 3 on my list then it's a proper bargain.
-
I think unless you really want to drop the best part of £7k on that final 5% then there's no point. For me, the 64 was about the heritage, the history and the fact that I'd worked hard to get the cash and just wanted to do it. I don't gig it, but it does get recorded a lot. But for any recording I've done, I reckon I could have swapped the 64 for your roadworn and we would both be very very hard pressed to notice any difference at all. The 64 does feel slightly different - not much, but the braz rw board with years of play and rolled edges and the unique feel of the tort does give it a slightly different vibe. The pickups have definitely aged as well so the output is slightly different - but again, not by much at all. I may be mad for saying it, but unless you really really do want to have a pre-cbs in the house, and absolutely nothing else would do, then there's no point. A roadworn will scratch any other itch very well.

1960s Hofner pickup rewind - advice needed

If it was a dream then it was bloody accurate 😁 -
I'm gonna say it. I had one. It was probably 95% of my 64P. Yeah. That good and that close. I only got rid because, er, I have a 64...

I would concur with the views expressed above re not being in a band. "Being in a band" can sound very formal - and it doesn't have to be. It can be as simple as finding a couple of like minded mates who play drums/guitar or whatever and hiring a practise room for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. For me, bass is about playing with others. Even informally. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you are "locked in" with a good drummer, or the way bass can influence the general tone of a song with note selection. I find that a good practise setup at home can really help in the early days. See if you can work out a way of playing along to prerecorded stuff that you like - maybe an amp with an aux in, or an interface for a computer so you can use headphones or the like. I have a slightly convoluted setup with a Helix whereby it acts as an audio interface on my laptop so I can play bass along to any music I have access to - a little EQ'ing to drop some of the prerecorded bass lets me play along and learn songs easily. I noticed a much quicker progress when I started doing this. -

No, you are absolutely correct - I know ash from oil city pretty well and he has said this before.. -

And then you lot can help me spend it -
Looks like a great feature set, and I'm sure it will be brilliant at doing it's thing. I will, however, definitely not buy one. I point blank refuse to buy any product that the manufacturer actively chooses to advertise using slap....

No more Procrastination! (An interesting small valve head story)
Bridgehouse replied to Bridgehouse's topic in Amps and Cabs
Had some people round this weekend. We had a nice little jam in our music room. Drums, Bass and two guitars. Gave me a chance to try out the PF20T and the Ashdown CTM15 in a smallish setting. Both amps were used with a Vanderkley 2x10. PF20T: Felt very traditional - lots of good ampeg tone, and was surprisingly loud and had plenty of presence. It behaved how I expected it to, and it did a great job of carrying bass against a full kit and two guitars going into Boss Katana amps. CTM15: Properly surprising amp. With no gain and master on full it was loud enough to carry through - not as loud as the PF20, but decent though. With gain dialled in at 50% it was positively raucous and had a really biting and cutting sound that sat really nicely in the mix - needed an eq tweak to get it to work, but it was really surprising. I can see them both being very useful in small band situations and for recording. The pf20t for "that" sound, and the CTM15 for a whole different type of sound. -
You could move up to a BF Compact - not a huge weight jump and the Compact or Super Compact will give you more presence. I've got a Compact which I've considered getting rid of before (was listed but no bites) and the 15" driver IMHO gives a fuller sound compared to the 12" - but that's just personal preference tho.

Listed it in the classifieds. I guess that's pretty decisive, isn't it? -
1974 Fender Precision - Olympic White All original Weight: 8 1/2 lbs Case: Original case (but rather battered now!) This bass was sold by Andy Baxter some time ago and eventually made it's way to me via bass chat. Here is the AB listing on his website sold items: http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=559 - there are plenty of "guts" photos on here for provenance, and Andy confirmed it was a 74 and was the same bass when I contacted him. It's a really good example of an early/mid 70's Precision in the desirable Olympic White (which has gone a really nice custard colour) There is a lot of roadwear - notably at the bottom and on the back, and the scratch plate has cracked by the jack socket but is glued and stable. The knobs are original and have de-chromed quite a bit on the top. Electronically it is in fine condition, and sounds exactly how you expect an early/mid 70's P to sound with a lot of upper-bass and low-mid thump. It's a bit hotter output compared to my 64. It has flats on it at the moment. Fret condition is good - plenty left in them and it's set up for a low/medium action (around 2mm E down to 1.5mm G) Neck adjusts properly so truss rod is fine. Ideally, I'd like a trade for a high end 4 string fretless. As it's a vintage and the case is not so good these days, I would also prefer a meet up - especially for a trade. I'm happy to travel a good distance as I'm out and about with work a lot - NE/NW/Mids/East/London - pretty much anywhere as long as it's not the SW or Scotland as they are a bit too far! Sorry, but no sales outside of the UK - I don't want to post this overseas.
