1. yeh I need to add this to the 'things to buy' list. I cant stand normal line input DI boxes for upright. Glad to hear this works in the real world.
2. I like it the way it is, but if it keeps growing I can see why it would make sense to divide it up. Im less keen on dividing along style lines, but perhaps more for the double bass tech side..amps/set ups etc... but for me I'm happy with the status quo until it gets bigger.
3.
Thought I'd bump this thread to say I had an amplified gig last night with a little trio and got a bunch of people coming up to me afterwards to say how good the bass sounded. Given that it was an amplified gig the Ehrlund pickup/pre has to take a massive amount of credit for that. And it managed it without me having to do anything, really. I think the Ehrlund might be the best bit of bass gear I've ever bought. It works brilliantly.
.ughhh gas inducing post! I really need to try one of these....
4. There really is no reason to change spiros unless they stop working....they also get easier to bow as they age....very cool strings.
5. I have added in a couple of student resources to my website, a reading list and recommended free online lessons. Let me know if I have missed any good ones off. I have also changed the layout, fingers crossed it works! http://geoffchalmers.com/bass-guitar-double-bass-lessons-leeds thanks Geoff
6. I would keep spiros on for as long as possible, certainly a few years as most people prefer the sound when played in. I wouldn't think of changing a set of spiros unless they started loosing their pitch or were not working in some way.
7. Looks like a very useful product to have on gigs. I hate the sound a normal line input di gives to the amp and front of house. Thanks for the link.
8. I did the jazz BA and had a great experience. Zoltan Dekany is the main bass tutor and is an incredible player and teacher. Leeds is a fantastic city and the college has a great reputation for the degree courses. ....That said I think the standard of all the main colleges seems really high at the moment and if you have the right attitude you can have an incredible experience at most of them. Its all about getting stuck into as many bands as possible and getting the most from the college. Good luck with the audition and let us know how you get on.
9. That's amazing value for such a good handmade instrument! I love the asymmetric neck.
10. Killer bass. I love Alan's work, they play so well!
11.
Would be really interested to see what a Metropolitan is like too - seems to have really positive reviews and I have been toying with upgrading ...but haven't managed to find a UK importer yet. At around £700 ...yup I'd want to try before I buy !! Let me know if you track a supplier down !
I have tried one and it was ok. Not as good as a pernambuco stick as expected. Good value but wasn't an amazing bow, just ok really.
12. Great stuff Clarky. Let us know how it goes on the gig!
13. a crazy 8 for small gigs and a Big E for everything else sounds like a killer DB rig! How are you finding the Big E Carky?
14. I like D'addario Helicore Hybrid light gague and they are cheaper than most. All DB strings are pretty expensive. Thomman have some good prices as do the string zone. I wouldn't go budget though as really cheap strings are so unpleasant to play. The spirocores may be more but will last forever.
15. Kolstien's soft and I like it. Pops is ok, but too sticky for me. A lot of guys on Talkbass use Oak?
16. I have never worked with a fellow professional musician who has referred to themselves as a 'session musician'. Most say freelance musician. I do sometimes hear other people use that term in error, but as its fairly commonly done it's easy to work out what they mean. I also would only say I was going to a session if it was a recording session.
17. 'Most musicians I know consider 'session work' to be a session in a recording studio. I don't ever recall anyone refering to a live gig as a session.' +1 . A gig is a gig. A 'session' is a recording session and there's very little professional 'session' work nowadays. I don't think I even know of any UK bassists who are full time session players anymore. Or even one who's work comprises more of sessions than gigs.
18. I have played a couple of highway 1s and they were superb. Really nice basses!
19. https://www.facebook.com/alpherinstruments These guys are do great repair work over in Saltaire and make lovely basses. Recommended.
20. Here's my M5-24 Ash/maple metro on the bench at Alpher Instruments in Saltaire, where it was receiving a set up and having the bridge changed from 19mm to a 18mm retrofit sadowsky bridge. It hasn't been touched since I bought it in 2008 so it was ready for a good set up. The guys did a great job!
21. wow. I love my m5 24 and would really like a 4 string to match. The mid control would also be really cool. Enjoy your new bass!
22. I love his responses! Shame there are people out there looking to rip people off but I doubt anyone would fall for this.
23. What an amazing line up! Congratulations and enjoy the gigs!
24.
Where did you buy it from? I'm on my phone and not much is coming up.
Direct from his site. I don't think it's available elsewhere. http://www.neiltarlton.com/
