1. Punk = Fender - thats the way it is. Most punk players used precisions - im talking proper punks not the re-issue. Get the best P bass you can afford. I'm guessing you are in the US so its difficult to work out what your budget really is cos the prices are f***ed in the UK, despite the exchange rate.
2. Thats two suggestions for halfs. I tried the D'Addario but did not like them - but then it was 20 years ago The other options are Elites and Rotosound as mentioned in the pinned post. I dont know of any others available mail order. I dont know where D'Addario's would fit in my brightness scale.
3. GB Guitars and EBS amps? Never heard of them
4. I would have thought if the shop or owner wants a grand for the 77 the least they could do is set it up properly. A bass that was a dog in 77 (and lots were) will be a dog in 2007.
5.
the OP wanted something "zingy", so as to half-wounds/grounds...to each their own, i guess. you will definitely get more "mwah" from the rounds. with a light set, more so
I think the OP wanted something less "zingy" or my understanding of english needs improving. So the Funkmasters are just light guage swing bass then?
6. Surprised its so heavy if the body is swamp ash - its pretty much the lighted wood used for bodies.
7. You are probably gonna be disappointed in the light weight/wallet requirement as good lightweight gear aint cheap. Apart from that, also remember that most combo's only output the specified watts when used with an extension cab. Apart from that as alluded to above - therer are too many variables to consider to be able to give a magic number so I'll fall back on the ususal advice - the more the better, also considering that speaker efficiency has far more impact on volume than watts.
8. Never hear of roto funkmasters and not on roto's website. Roto halfs are called solo bass.
9.
I had read this pinned thread, I understand the pro's & cons of rounds v flats but when it comes to internet shopping I dont know which strings are half/semi e.g. are the D'Addario pro steels? I realise its a bit of trial & error but knowing a good place to start helps a lot, thanks, cygnus
Half rounds almost always say so. I've never seen a site that does not distinguish between rounds, flats and halfs (aka ground or pressure wounbd). D'Addario halfs are called Halfs. Not Chrome or Pro Steel.
10. Badass is the de-facto replacement bridge cos it fits the fender holes. There are alternatives from Scaller (fitted to one of my GB's) and Hipshot (fitted to my other GB), plus Gotoh and ABM and more I am sure. You never see a custom bass builder fitting a Badass?
11. Mids are your friend. Use it wisely!
12. What do you want to know that is not covered here
13. How much long face and bottom lip did that take?
14. The reggae tune was The Liquidator by Harry J and the Allstars IIRC.
15.
Gigging with a 75 watt amp and a sound engineer...
Another +1 for the T-max. Lovely amp.
16. Are you sure you have read all the threads - I believe there is one pinned? Some go into considerable detail regarding the pros and cons of rounds, flats and halfs. I use Status Hotwire halfs.
17. The Gallery stock them, for 999 of your pounds - dont know who else. Looks good. I like the look of the 2x12 neo cabs with vertical drivers (to keep Alex and BFM happy).
18. Thats SEX! Are you gonna put a BadAss on it?
19. Brilliant and under rated - just listen to the Schools Out album.
20. Its good gear. Not the most transparent but unbeatable for bang per buck. Pretty well unbreakable as well. But it does weigh a ton. The only reason I switched to EBS was the weight - the better sound was a bonus - but it cost me 5 times what you are spending.
21.
this
Link seems a bit flakey. This Ones For Blanton by Duke Ellington and Ray Brown. Just piano and bass. Recreation of some of the lost duets with Ellington and Jimmy Blanton, who revolutionised jazz bass playing in 1939.
22.
Hey Chris - dont tell me you have pulled Kylie and Danni's mum, I'd make that an early 70's!
Spot on!
23. Why? Its not like stings are dear unless you go for top end. And its not like you have a £50 bass! I guess if you change for every gig it might be worth it if they sound OK. I always have a spare set of what I use otherwise if you break one you could end up putting a string on thats completly at odds with the rest. Strings and leads are two vastly under rated aspects to getting a good sound.
24. Peoples involvement increases with drink. If they peak at closing time.................. Done lots of gigs that sucked and been told after we were the best band they ever had - but I bet they say that every week. Sounds like you gig was pants Homer but it happens and its mostly down to the venue management being tossers. We often dont get told the times etc. Bet you wont be going back! Unfortunately noise limiters are likely to become more prevelant under 'elf n safety masturbation.
25. Just out of interest you are starting it up in standby and it trips when you turn the power on not the standby? Are you using an RCD?
