1.
You could mask it off and put on a couple of thin coats of satin varnish - I guess you just need to seal off the wood so that finger grime doesnt get into the pores? Waxed maple seems to pick up quite alot of dirt, experienced from a non-bass related project. If you dont so it right the first time, you can always take the frets out and try again!
Yeah, I was thinking maybe giving the board a few coats of a celulose type finish, as wax really does get grubby. Rosewood boards never seem to have anything on them at all, and maple seems to always be coated somehow.
2.
Nice SG there! is it an old one?
The SG is an epiphone. Its not very old. I've had it maybe 4 years, they guy who had it before owned it from new for less than six months and snapped the headstock off it during a gig! Gave it to me and I repaired it. The neck is painted a matt black now to hide the repair. Actually looks really nice in the flesh - was amazed that I actually managed to fix it - was my first attempt at doing anything like it. Never play it though, I love bass, love acoustic guitars, but electric guitars just dont do anything for me.
3. Ooooh lovely! This is making me very very excited - my GS112 cab should arrive at the Bass Merchant this week, then I'll get it next week! Been waiting for what feels like forever. Has been a couple of weeks. Was so tempted by a White Hot DB112... Nice to hear that a few people on here are using Aguilar 1x12 cabs with Markbass heads and liking the results...
4.
what are the sizes,many thanks
the sizes are 44x105mm http://shop.warwick.de/product_info.php/in...r-5-string.html thats them.
5. today i nearly cried. well not cried. but got very upset. the neck started to seem VERY VERY bendy while doing the profile. not good. so i called it a day and came home so i could put some hardware on it and string it up to see how it acts under tension. happy now. it didnt bend. its actually stayed pretty strait withoug touching the trussrod. i just nipped it up a little and its fine. obviously there are no frets, nut etc but they are tuned to pitch. this is what it looks like at the mo. couple more days work and it should be ready to fret then oil. all the major body work has been done. question. im going to do an oil and wax finish - so im guessign tru oil, several coats, then bees wax or something. what do i do to the fingerboard though?????????? do you oil and wax that too? its maple. thinking of getting it all done apart from the finish, puting the rad on the fingerboard and fretting, then take it to a pro who would be willing enough to show me how to do the board and fretting. pay them obviously. i just dont want to do it myself and make a hash of it.
6.
That sucks. I hope it works out for you. Seymour Duncan's support is supposed to be good from what I've heard.
thanks. yeah it really does suck. ive emailed them, but no reply so far. Apart from it not working (grrrrrrr) it looks pretty cool. And I have nice chrome barrel knobs for it now too.
7. er.... as it is in the photo above - the bass weighs 5.2lbs!.........................
8.
If it's one like this, I'll do it for you
thanks for the offer, but im sorted now anyway. cheers karl
9. did more today. made a scratchplate, sanded it, did everything really that needs doing. now i ive just got to paint it. its going to be a lightish gunmetal grey the bit of wood really does look crap around the back ans sides, so its definately getting painted. shame though. but hey - free wood
10. did quite a bit today. glued body wings to neck sanded back totally flat sorted out tail end where tuners will sit pickup hole control cavity and jack/pot holes bridge earth adn pickup wire holes rads around the tops and bottoms i cant believe how light this bass is! i hope its not too light.... i;ll weigh it soon. this pic shows the back. hadnt put one of those up yet. did the control cavity etc. heres one of the front. the pickup hole IS NOT WONKY! i know it looks like it is in the pic but i promise it isnt. going to start on the neck and heel profile tomorrow.
11. hi i have two MEC pickups from a rockbass streamer i brought the bass from ebay in october, took it to bits, stripped it, primed it and was going to paint it a cool greeny blue colour and give it to my girl friend who played bass but had to get rid of hers for money reasons. anyway, single now so i have plans to fill the pickup holes and replace with a singel p bass pup or somthing - love the neck - not a fan of big ballsy warwick tone so im gonna try somthign a little different. any offers on the pickups? they are identicle so i will sell them individualy if needed. or would swap for other pickups. would sell with the springs that go underneath. possibly with pots and knobs too.... cheers karl
12. bumpy bump. pleeeeeaaaase help. i'll buy you a pint!
13. oh, and the wings arent actually glued on yet....
14. had a day in work today doing various things to a couple of guitars. sorted the contouring out on a body ive built for a jazz neck - shall upload pics when finished. also installed a j pup into my p bass - thread is on here - disasterous ending as half the coil doesnt work!!!!! one thing that did go well though was my headless build. here are some pics there you have it. i'll do more on it tomorrow.
15. Hey for a while my mex p bass has had the p pup from a Basslines APJ-1 p/j pickup set installed today i got around to installing the other so i popped it in. put a side jack on etc, has nice battery compartment on the back that i did last time the half of the coil for the D and G strings on the J pup doesnt work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! going to email seymour duncan now
16. hey ive decided that i want to put a scratchplate on my latest build, it p bass shaped but only has one humbucker at the bridge position, but the rest of it is going to look pretty blank once its painted, so im going for a plate wondering if anyone has a 1951 style or telebass style plate that they could possibly draw around for me and post to me? i could post you a stamp and a few quid or something to pay?? thanks
17.
Why 100k? - hard to find and a bit of a dark tone unless you're running an active bass. Then again, if you're running an active bass, 25k is more usual. If you want a warm tone on a passive go for 250/250 or 500/500 for brighter. I run a 500/500 stacked pot on my P and it sounds warm enough for me. Have a look at www.axesrus.com for bits
I am currently using 100K pots, as the pickups are active. The pots are what came with my pickup set. I'll have a look on axesrus.com cheers.
18. evenin chaps got a MIM P bass, loaded with Badass II bridge and the P pup from an APJ-1 BassLines ProActive set. I want to pop the J pup in on monday or tuesday, but will need another pot for the vol control. What I DONT want to do is add an extra one - i.e. a third pot, cuz that just looks terrible IMO. I would idealy like a stacked pot. I'm using 100K audio taper pots at the moment with a paper film cap for the tone control. Does anybody know where I can order a stacked pot (100K/100K), another standard 100K pot for the tone control and, crucially, a set of matching chrome barrel knobs? Cheers Karl
19. Noooooooooooo, don't listen to them! Leave them pickup covers alone. You have one very sexy P-bass there. I'd love an American P-bass - can't really think of a bass I'd rather have. Just can't afford it I mean my mex is pretty cool - with its tort scratch plate, Waynepunkdude! Hehe. That blue is awesome though. Vintage-style tuners would be pretty cool maybe. Expensive though I guess.
20. I've got an old Aria Pro II that's as light as a pack of fags. Don't know if that's true of all similar Arias, but I remember playing a what I think was a SB1000 and that was very light too. Loooovvvveryl neck. Sounded ace too. May be worth a look.
21. Oh this is SUCH a cool thread! Love it. Here are mine then. Tis me! ^ And this was taken a while ago but I love it ^
22. Decide what neck you prefer, buy that bass, then if its a J, swap the neck pup out for a P - you can easily get hold of a pre-cut scratch plate to do this without having to mess around making one. And if its a P neck you love, slap a J pup in at the bridge. Go for it! You can always sell/swap it on here if you find its not what youre after.
23. SOOOOOO MANY! Cheers guys. Certainly not cheep things are they these pedals.... Sansamp VT seems pretty cool. Have listened to some samples. Electro Harmonix LPB 2ube looks nuts - but is flippin massive, probably nearly the size of my LMII!
