1. Oh this is SUCH a cool thread! Love it. Here are mine then. Tis me! ^ And this was taken a while ago but I love it ^
2. Decide what neck you prefer, buy that bass, then if its a J, swap the neck pup out for a P - you can easily get hold of a pre-cut scratch plate to do this without having to mess around making one. And if its a P neck you love, slap a J pup in at the bridge. Go for it! You can always sell/swap it on here if you find its not what youre after.
3. SOOOOOO MANY! Cheers guys. Certainly not cheep things are they these pedals.... Sansamp VT seems pretty cool. Have listened to some samples. Electro Harmonix LPB 2ube looks nuts - but is flippin massive, probably nearly the size of my LMII!
4. I had this problem when I had my Fender Jazz. I actually poped some Bartolini pups in it - did nothing to fix the quiet string. Badass II bridge on the other hand worked fantasticly.
5. Hey, Been playing a lot in a cover band recently that does all sorts - REM, Slade, The Jam, Stealers Wheels, Rolling Stones blah blah blah, and I want a bit more variation in my tone between different songs. I use a LMII head with a MIM P-bass with active Basslines pickups. GS112 is on the way but I have to wait weeks for shipment to arrive so I'm using whatever cabs I can borrow atm. 90+% of the time I play fingerstylie, but when I grab a pick and dig in I'm after is a sound thats fat and a bit gritty that would suit pickstyle rock. I need my sound to fill a bit of space becuase the guitarest is a bit hairy-fairy. I was wondering if maybe there are reasonably priced valve stomp boxes around with which I could grab a bit of dirt and fat tuby sound? I use various solid state overdrives/distortions but nothing comes close to what I'm after. Cheers Karl
6.
I want one, but unfortunately i wouldn't know where to begin with such a project. I dont suppose anyone knows of any 1x10 cabs that you can pick up in a shop.
Think i've seen genz-benz jobbys...
7.
I have rehearsed with a single omni 10.5 and our loud drummer - I just about got away with it but two of them are a lot more convincing!
I'm really not familiar with these Omni jobbjs people keep mentioning. I'll have a look at em. I've only really built this thing becuase I thought I'd be a while without a cab to practice with after getting rid of my Markbass 103H combo on tuesday. Built the cab on wednesday, but ended up ordering a GS112 on thursday. I used the little thing today to practice in the conservatory which was a nice change, so I'm already liking how portable it is. Omni 10.5 I've heard mentioned a few times - seems a bit more of a serious cab than my little practice thingy.
8.
However good the cabinet, a single Beta 10 won't ever be able to keep up with a drummer, volume-wise.
Tbh back the days I started playing, I used a Laney HCM 65B 65w 12" combo with a drummer... quietly mind you... Yeah maybe I was just expecting too much. Its the only cab I've used since moving away from my Markbass 103H combo. As for the Vegi's not liking it - I said in an earlier post that it was being trimmed in leather. But, today found that its actually fake leather stuff. So its all good.
9. Done! Looks awesome in my opinion. Took longer to trim than it did to build the cab! The fit is infinatly better than I expected I would be able to manage, having never done anything involving fabrics before. Think I'm going to make a cloth grill for it, rather than leaving the speaker exposed. Thinking black, tweedy look. I'll add another pic when I get round to making the grill. Cheers.
10.
niiiiice! I really love the lakland and the 8-string! My experience with 8-stringed basses is limited to watching pictures like these so can you tell anything about the playability (is that even a word?), and how do you amplify it? (without the sound getting muddy)
Count the strings on that "8-string" again... Was listening to Pearl Jam today in the car and thinking how much I wanna have a go on an 8 or 12-string!
11. Here's my Ibanez Acoustic bass, I absoloutly LOVE it. Play her all the time :- Have had several other Ibanez basses, all SR whatevers, but I really REALLY want this one back :- SR506 I think it was...
12. Took the speaker back out again today. Just after I removed it my new speaker cable from OBBM turned up - so I haven't had the chance to try it, but the build quality certainly is great - and its a nice chunky cable with big juicy Neutirk 1/4" connectors. Nice. Anyway, removed speaker and feet etc, and sprayed the front baffle black. Now then, covering it - I've got some speaker cloth that I ordered a while back when I first ordered the bits to make this cab and it is disgusting. Dark grey. I cannot bring myself to have a grey cab. So, found some cream leather in my mums massive reserves of fabrics and such. Have offered it up to the cab and hardware and looks pretty damn good in my opinion. On and you can see the carpet offcuts I used to line the inside of the cab in the pic.
13. Silver does sound a lot clearer and more detailed than Gold. I don't know why, just I have heard the difference in Hi-Fi equipment. I figure it can't hurt to use a bit of silver. Got some copper shield stuff I can use too. I'm really excited about this bass. The only concern I have is over the final fret dressing/leveling and setup etc. May have someone do that for me - although I really would rather not. And thanks Paul - I'll post a pic of some truly astounding socks later on...
14.
hi Karl, does Rob have tuners and headpieces back in stock now? Or did you buy them a while ago?
Hey, I have had these tuners and bits for YEARS as they were from a first bass build attempt that I'd rather not mention... I believe I briefly met you the Friday before last at Live music in peterborough... You were with Nick and I think you had your rather lovely headless 6 string with you, that I have only just recently read about - that is one sexy bass sir! I would love to have a six string again
15. Well, I'm getting back into the swing of things now, so I'm going to aim to finish this bass I started a couple of months ago next. The wings are not glued to that neck block so dont panic! The wings are walnut with 10mm thick ash tops (35mm overall) with bubinga strips between the wings and the neck The neck is walnut with maple stripes. Fingerboard will be maple, and fretted. Pickup is a Status MM Passive electronics wired with silver that I've got left over from some interconnects I made for my hi-fi, paper film cap for tone pot, gold outupt jack Black hardware - headless tuners and nut block from Status Satin finish Should be quite cool. Then I'll try and finish that fretless P-bass I started ages ago too....
16.
That is going to be gorgeous and I'm a huge fan of blue basses too. Well done. I wish I had the talent to do this.
Blue it shall be then! I was waiting to see who suggested a colour first and I'd pick that one Cheeky eh? I work for a small (5 people including myself) pattern making company. Have been there nearly a year now - was a tool room machinest before that. And no, pattern making isnt making pretty patterns... I hope I've not been a bit careless with my pickup placement so close to the bridge, but I LUURVE playing back there and the only other bass that I really use is my P-bass, so I don't get that option.
17. There we go. I HATE drilling the holes for the tuning machines. Went fine, but its just so fiddely to get them all even without a jig. Engineers square is worth its weight in gold though So I've strung it and tuned it, fiddled with the truss rod. Can't be bothered to set it up or innotate it as the bridge has to come off again anyway. Comfortable to play it sitting down (even though the action is massive at the moment) Great neck though! Its a Mighty Mite neck that I got for 47 quid off ebay Hopefully I'll get a chance to finish the control cavity at work next week, then I can sand it all nicely and start the finish. Might make a scratch-plate for it seeing as there is such a big gap between the pickup and the neck. I'm not going to add another pickup - I dont want to spend another 50 odd quid on another one. With any luck this sould be finished by the end of the month.
18. Well, after building my little 1x10 cab on wednesday beause there was not much going on at work, we had another day without much on today... So I grabbed my spair status soapbar and fender jazz neck and bashed a body out thats the front and there's the back (but you guys know ) I've been wanting to start this bass for a while, and had the harware at work in my draws, so im glad to have finally started it. I'm not going to carve any contouring onto it - I'm gonna see how it feels without it. Thinking about staining it black or very very very very dark blue, becuase the colour of the piece of ash I have used is horrid. However, I've never stained a body before - can anyone advise me on how to go about it? I'd like to end with with a satin finish. Just going to fit the bridge and tuners now and string it up and see how strait I've managed to get the neck....
19. Mmmmm... Some of you are going to cheer me on, others will be less enthusiastic, but I think I'm going to order a GS112 and see how I get on with it. I mean, they are only 355 quid. That sounds like a good price to me for something that so many people rate so highly. The Bergantino cabs are very cool, I heard them with markbass heads at last years Music LIVE at the NEC and was dead impressed. But they are a lot more expensive than I can justify. I think I'm just going to have to put up with the weight. I guess players managed 20 years ago before Neo cabs were everywhere.... and Stevie yeah, I do have the facilities to make the cabs, but when it comes to designing the box, sourcing good qaulity speakers, tweeters and designing a crossover, I'd really have to do a lot of research - and I just can't be bothered at the moment. But it is certainly something I'd like to do in the future. I imagine I'll end up with the same rig as GreeneKing. Stuff is just so expensive
20. Thanks for the enthusiastic responces guys! No, I'm not going to build three more. In fact, I'm going to sell the other three speakers - or maybe all four and buy one decent one. I only need one little cab like this. It took me just over 2 hours to make the cab, and another half hour to put the carpet on the inside and wire it up. Like I say, it needs to be carpeted outside and the corner pieces put on, but I don't know where to get some black cabinate cloth (so if anyone knows, would you PM me please). The dimentions and ports etc are possibly a bit iffy becuase i found a 1x10 cab online, got the outside dimentions from their site, read that they were made from 19mm ply, and scaled the ports sizes and positions off the screen. But it works ok so I think I've made a good educated guess. The ports are just holes, not tubes. Playing it a bit last night and think I noticed that when I started to crank it to the sorts of volumes you'd need with a drummer, things lost control abit. But I'm going to have another look and see if it was just the beer affecting my judgment... Er.... I was going to type something else but I've forgotten. I'll remember later. Thanks again guys.
21. Oooo so much stuff to look at! Cheers guys. Think I've got about a week to make a decision and order something so I'll be having a look around.
22. Hey So, I have moved away from my Markbass 103H combo to a LMII head. I have a little 1x10 cab that I have made for practice and possibly using with my acousitc bass and guitars. I'm after one or two 1x12 cabs, or maybe a 1x12 and a 2x10. Lightweight would be nice, but I'm really not that fussed about weight, physical size is more important, but it must be fairly loud. I.e. be heard over Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards and Drums in a 5 piece blues/rnb/rock band. The guitarist uses a lovely Orange Rocker 30 combo 1x12 with 1x12 extension cab when used live on big gigs. I'm liking the price and size of the Aguilar GS 112 cabs. I would probably want to add the GS112NT for large gigs... Does anyone have any opinion on these cabs, or any other cabs I sould be looking at? I would like to spend around 350 quid per cab really, but 400 could be done... Cheers guys Karl
23.
cute lil cab. Can you PM me the specs for this thing, I may attempt to build one myself.
No problem mate. PM'd.
