  1. Oh no, that is very sad to read. Not a fan of the Van Hagar stuff but I was one of many who was turned onto his guitar playing in the Roth years. Definitely not overstating it to say he was the most influential and significant electric guitar player since Hendrix to this day. And he and his band made rock fun, something which has largely been absent from rock ever since.
  2. Yep , 'fame' is a niche thing these days. Those days where being famous meant almost everyone on the planet knows who you are long gone, but even then the big names of cinema, music and sport of the 50s - 80s generally meant nowt to millennials. I don't follow footie or cricket either and couldn't name a single player in the England teams. Rugby, however, I do know and could maybe name almost every player in each of the Six Nations teams of the last few seasons. Haven't got a clue about modern pop n' rock either. Hadn't heard of 11 of the 12 nominees for the Mercury MP but I have a geeky knowledge of 'electronica', which is what I mostly listen to.
  3. At the mo' I have the excellent and seminal 76:14 by Global Communication playing, recently released as part of a 3-CD package together with the hard to find and pricey Pentamorous Metamorphosis + tunage never put out on CD before.
  4. For me the thing about prog, and Yes especially, is it sounds like a bunch of strangers doing their own thing in different studios and then a producer stuffs it all together into a few tracks. Sounds like they were trying a bit too hard too shut out any blues vibe and crowbar in as much jaaaazz and classical influences as poss. The cooking equivalent is making a pie and mixing up bits of cod, pork, sprouts, jam, raspberries and parsnips for the filling
  5. Not a fan of DC and Marvel comics or films at all with the exceptions of Deadpool and Kick-donkey. My taste in comics started with The Beano and ended with Viz. As for GOT, no I'm definitely not a fan.
  6. Like him as bass player and Sailing the Seas of Cheese is praps the only album those with a passing interest in Primus need. Of course his greatest achievement was nailing the South Park theme tune gig 😁
  7. TBH I'd be well surprised if any here had never heard of Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp and Hulk Hogan. Didn't know Ryan Gosling plays but knew Gary Sinise does. Hadn't heard of Jason Momoa until I saw him in Braven which is an underrated and neat little thriller.
  8. Very sad. One of my all-time fave players. Never knew he got ill again but then again he'd been ill for a long time previously. IMO the best exponent of fingerstyle funk I've heard.
  9. Including artist compilation albums is a bit daft otherwise why not go the whole hog include some 'That's What I Call Music' or Dad Rocks .
  10. Likes me some seriously funky old school hip hop, and especially Ice Cube's Death Certificate and Amerikkka's Most Wanted. Gets me fired up for a day of work ahead
  11. obviously too much time on their hands during full/partial/zero lockdown or whatever's been going on in the US of A
  12. Each to his own but I really like the contrast of the line being played with flanger on then off
  13. You telling us you've no love 'For the love of money'?!😱
  14. If you like lead style bass played with a pick then IMO the first two New Model Army albums with Stuart Morrow are musts. Terrific tone Also the bass tone throughout ABC's Lexicon of Love are bang on the money And following on from the previous post yes here is original Cure bassman Michael Dempsey and an example of his exemplary pick playing with The Associates. A badly underrated player
  15. I can't get on with finger picks at all but on acoustic and electric guitars I used a thumb pick and my fingers. I've tried using thumb pick on bass but the heavier strings have more resistance and it doesn't work that well. Instead I've copped Bernard Edwards' chucking technique.
  16. When i told my parents i wanted an acoustic guitar for Christmas they were pleased as they thought I aspired to be the next Julian Bream. When they heard me crunching out the chords to Neil Diamond's Crunchy Granola Suite they became a tad disillusioned. That said, pater has Van Gogh's ear for music while mum thinks that unless its Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc she's not that interested in the noises i make
  17. Viz Davie 504 his stuff isn't very instructional but it can be quite amusing. There's no doubting his skills though I can see why slap haters wouldn't like his YT channel. Scott's very strong on slap, and funk in general, which is great for me, but there may not be a s much for metalheads. Mind you he does seem to be a big fan of Billy Sheehan. I don't particularly care for the music BS plays but I'm interested in learning some of his techniques as he is a monster fingerstylist.
  18. No particular stories to tell but I've mostly played in funk/disco bands and the caixa in samba groups and we'd spend as much time working on choreographed moves as we did on the music. It was much more fun to perform and always got audiences/crowds dancing too.
  19. There are far more irksome pop-up ads on YT than Scott's. Also it's a business and you have to maintain a constant presence on YT to ensure regular income from ads. I haven't signed up to his academy as he's put out a lot of good free material, which is enough for my needs being that now I'm just a hobby player. So fair play to him to find ways of guaranteeing himself a decent income for his family.
  20. I'm not bothered by the regular pop-ups advertising his SBL academy and other than Mark 'Talking Bass' Smith he's my go to for tips esp on slap techniques . SD's a very good and affable tutor and I like his peripheral stuff e.g. his chats with bass greats but for my money there's no online bass educator better than Mark Smith.
  21. I honestly hadn't come across one as stores I usually go to like Bass Direct, PMT Bristol and Richards Guitars in Stratford don't stock them. The 'masters' you name are fusion players, a genre I don't enjoy listening to while my fave players, nearly all from the funk and 80s pop genres, don't play them
  22. Scott D shows his collection on YT. At 4.22 he shows an F bass, made in Canada. Looks a beaut and sounds it. TBH I'd never heard of this maker before. I'm sure someone on BC must have. Actually I've never heard of Stenbeck either. How many bass makers are there on the planet I wonder?
  23. I've been looking out an original but used prices are high at around £1,500 -2,000
  24. Sir Duke...it's not the horns and bass unison line that was the problem but the deceptively tricky line in the verses as there's little repetition
