1. How very dare they!! And as for that Bono! Using his fame to raise awareness of human rights and other worthwhile causes! Outrageous! And also using his fame to help invest Lithuanian in shopping malls to avoid tax...allegedly!!! And also using his fame for investing in Lithuani
2. True greatness surely = originality+ talent+ influence+ big sales+ werldwide fame+long lasting legacy. Based on this The Beatles score on all counts as do a few others. Others may disagree but then again words like 'great', 'classic' , 'legend' , 'genius' and 'hero' have been badly debased through overuse
3. While I've no issue with the term 'rock' used for the 20 bands here, I don't know what the basis is for this sh1te list but most of the bands in it don't qualify either on the basis of sales, long lasting popularity or significance/influence. The likes of The Kinks, Blur, Stone Roses, Super Furry Animals, T Rex, Roxy Music and The Jam are barely known outside the UK and even within Britain their sales are pretty modest, and probably unfamiliar to most people under30. I can't abide Radiohead but I guess they should be among the top 10 while both The Who and Queen (also non faves) are probably top 5.
4.
Once we have tunes up to gig standard I don't listen to them again. Most tunes suffer from a bit of creep and if I listen to the originals I start to notice things that we have naturally arranged slightly differently to suit our line up. Plus there's so much music out there, why would I listen to the tunes I play several times a month? I don't think I even listened to recordings of originals bands I've played in. Thinking about it, I'm not really an active listener of music. I tend to listen to all my music in the car rather than in a darkened room. In fact I'm not even a very active TV watcher, most of the time I'm on the internet with the TV in the background. Think I need to go on a meditation course...
+1 here. my in-car CD player has a higher spec than my one at home. Yep, I'm an old fashioned f@rt who still prefers CDs to streaming, vinyl, MP3s. BTW does anyone now ever just plug in and sit through a whole album while doing nowt else?
5. The only band I like here are The Smiths and a positive dislike for most of the rest clouds my objectivity. I much prefer US rock bands even though I'm not American. I'm no fan but am surprised Maiden and Judas Priest aren't in this list considering their sales, influence and longevity. But why the Stone Roses? Just two albums proper with the second being widely panned and largely irrelevant outside the UK
6. Does the music you play in your bands differ from what you like listening to for fun? When I used to be in bands I'd rarely ever listen to the tunes we covered for fun. I enjoyed playing them on stage but not listening to for pleasure. These days I mostly listen to electronica but there's not much bass guitar there so it's a bit difficult finding bands who wanna cover Orbital, 808 State etc
7. I wish I could be in a decent gigging band again. I'm in my late 40s and three times divorced but it's harder finding that band than it has been finding myself another good woman. And that's no exaggeration, having spent 6 months on dating websites till I met my current partner. I moved to Gloucestershire in early 2000's and in Cheltenham there used to be many good venues but with so many former pubs now Costa Coffee , housing etc and what with more and more people preferring to stay in and stare at screens opportunities for gigs are thin on the ground
8. I've a Cort B4FL which I'm very happy with and am thinking of getting a fretted model. Excellent VFM. I've now taken quite a fancy to the looks of 3 in the GB series; 74JJ, 74JH and 54JJ. Anyone got one of these and are happy with it?
9.
My post was about your 'Def Leppard's synthetic, sterile mush that is Hysteria' comment. I dont feel this way about it, so therefore we have different opinions...which is good. Personally i find Vic Wootten, Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller as boring as hell to listen to, not my type of music at all, so again, we have other opinions. You cant please all the people all of the time so its not worth loosing sleep over.
Ah but if you re-red my last post you'll see that like you I absolutely have no interest in the music of Wootten, Miller and other noted bass virtuosos.
10.
Just goes to show we all have different opinions, and no matter what the Bass chat collective thinks, there are people out there that dare to like other things.
It's not about whether people like this album or not. It was in the article as a'classic bass album', but the basslines on it are pretty functional to my ears. Functional is absolutely fine and I've no problem with that if it serves the song. I'd never plump for owt by Vic Wootten, Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller etc as a fave bass album as their music doesn't interest me. I'm more likely to choose albums where the bass is distinctive and drives the songs along not where there are flashy licks e.g. Sulk by The Associates, Lexicon of Love by ABC, Black & White by The Stranglers, No Rest for The Wicked by New Model Amy, Songs In The Key Of Life, So by Peter Gabriel, Graceland and What's Goin' On.
11. Not a bass but I did sell a white American Tele two about half a dozen years ago, which I now deeply regret.
12.
Saw Von Hertzen Brothers last night, great show. Exactly the sort of thing Jools should have on to pep things up while they are in the country. Never happen of course.
I was once pleasantly surprised to see Mastodon and Underworld some time within the last few years though not on the same show. These aren't the usual sort of band Later shows however
13. My main beef with Later is they always play it safe, with the same old tired , identikit indie guitar bands, sensitive folky strummers and beardy Americana geezers. All very tame and inoffensive. Just wish they'd book some acts with a bit of balls that could tear the place down like some bonkers metal band, a hip hop combo with a bad attitude or cutting edge electronica. There's quite a lot around to choose from.
14. This lunchtime I came across a copy of Bass, read the article on Bootsy, flicked through the rest and decided to get a copy of Private Eye instead. The last article is on Classic Bass Albums, which this month includes the odd inclusion of Def Leppard's synthetic, sterile mush that is Hysteria. I've listened to this and frankly IMO you might as well call owt by U2 or AC/DC a bass album. Anyone else perplexed at some of the entries that have been in the Classic Bass Albums column?
15. My first bass was a short scale EB copy which I got for about £20 from a bloke at school back in the early 80s. For some reason I covered it in Marvel stickers so it ended up looking quite shoite but it played pretty well. I then repainted it and it looked even sh*tt*er but it was still my only bass for about a dozen years and an embarrassment to many of the bands I was in which is why I tended to get stuck at the back of the stage. My only other instrument was a battered Eko 12-string acoustic with much of the lacquer peeling off but I still used it to gig with, feeding it through an antique Boss fuzz box and an anonymous wah pedal somebody left at my house and never came back for.
16.
I can't stand that song. Possibly jaded from playing the damn thing in covers bands for years
Me neither and I like the Undertones but it's one of their weaker songs and one I always skip Anyone recall That Petrol Emotion which was formed by ex-Undertones? A fine and underrated band who were much better than the Undertones IMO.
17. + 1 for The Hamsters here too. Way back in the mists of time when I lived in London I saw them quite a few times at venues like the Half Moon in Putney . Excellent band . An excellent guitar player as I recall who also had a nice line in witty patter
18. Viz this thread title it depends what you play. Sure if it's general rock , metal or indie I guess bass players are usually overlooked but if you're in a funk/disco band it's generally all eyes on you as anyone into funk or disco knows it's ALL about the bass.
19. The intention behind this thread wasn't to slag off AC and others but find out if they're genuinely able to play stuff that's more demanding than their day jobs require..
20.
thanks for the support guys, glad to see most people still have a firm grip on reality
Aye, PCness has gone so over the top when you can't even make a positive comment about someone's appearance . On another forum I got castigated for a similar positive remark about a girl on a TV show. Cripes, some people are better looking than others and we fancy them more. What's the problem there?
21. The problem with jamming is that when people are undecided what to play it often descends into dreary 12 bar blues stuff. Or worse you end up sounding like the Grateful Dead
22. Ha, one good reason for slapping . No one ignores you. Either they think you're the mutts nuts or they just want you to shut the fook up. Either way, you don't go unnoticed.
23. Reminds me a lot of all that Windham Hill stuff, very well played but as boring as fvck. Viz her looks. she's moderately pretty but that's all ..IMO of course.
24. I've been wondering about a number of bass players who aren't known for being virtuosos but who maybe can really cut it when given a chance but it's just that the music their bands play doesn't allow them to. I'm talking about folk like Adam Clayton, Michael Anthony and the players in The Cult, AC/DC, Status Quo etc. Just wondering if any of you peeps have seen them in side projects or doing bass clinics and left you thinking' yikes, he really can actually play'.
25. Other than the occasional bit of dep work with wedding bands I've not gigged properly as a bass player for almost a dozen years. Been a drummer in a couple of groups up to to a year or so ago and now in a newish folk-world music type combo. Still not playing bass though! Basswise, funk, afrobeat and Dub are my main things but just not been able to find others who wanna play this
