I keep meaning to comment on one of these threads, love her stuff, it's so dense with ideas and little quirk, brilliant to hear that in this area of the musical; spectrum. Her phrasing is just mind boggling, especially combined with the speed and pitch acrobatics. Can't wait to hear a proper quality version of this, there's some crazy stuff going in the the second instrumental bit with the strings and the whispery vocals and maybe a synth, but it kinda gets lost under the swirly tinniness of the youtube bitrate unfortunately, I'll definitely be giving the EP a listen.

My dad gave me some super heavy duty stuff they apparently use to hold train side panels on, but I never got round to using it, as I wasn't gigging at the time and was constantly changing the board. My board is just a flight case, I've had a few jams recently and I've just taken to putting a pillow on top of the pedals, holds them in place perfectly. I'll probably dig out that train stuff if I start gigging again though.
^ That is a nice idea, I like it (not the ball ache part, the rest of it ). You could maybe try creating a drum pattern by slapping'n'tapping - not necessarily playing it 'live', but creating some suitable thumps and pops that you could then sample and arrange to create a drum pattern. It's got me thinking anyway! Something I'll have to try myself in future. BigRedX did something similar-ish in September - not using a bass, but creating a drum pattern and other sounds out of samples. Worked very well. You can listen to it here if you missed it first time round.
RedX's is more the kind of thing I had in mind (I think I voted for his actually, definitley my kind of thing) I'm probably gonna end up using delay pedal glitch's more than anything, this is a quick test I knocked together, it's the kind of thing I'm aiming for: https://soundcloud.com/bobbass4k/glitch-loop-test The first sound is a delay pedal glitch, and the kickdrumesque sounds are also pedal manipulations, the main trouble I'm having is getting decent snare and hat sounds the same way, the ones in that test are library samples.

I really can't settle on an interpretation of this, I look at it and see a lot of things, a mountain range, a guy trapped under a sheet (reassuring seen as that's what it is), and any number of sci-fi/horror films where something bursts forth from a membrane. I'll probably end up doing something claustrophobic and unsettling. I'm setting myself a slight challenge of only using a bass, guitar, and pedals to generate sounds, which should be fine except for the glitchy drum beat I have planned, that could be a bit of a ball ache.

It looks like I'm going to win a guitar on evilBay, the seller has agreed to ship it if i arrange and pay for a courier (although last time I agreed that with a seller they got very annoyed that they had to package it...). I'll use interparcel to arrange it, so does anyone have opinions on who's the best out of TNT, Parcelforce, UPS and CityLink for shipping guitars? There isn't a case included in the sale so he'll probably pack it in a box, so careful handling will be very important.

Good mix of styles again this month. To satisfy the curiosity of probably no-one, my title is an anagram of "Harvey's Bristol Cream", with the possessive apostrophe omitted because that's just the kind of grammatical badass I am. It was the christmasiest thing I could think of.

It depends what you mean by "That" tone? We probably all have different ideas of what "that" tone is, some song references would be helpful.

As I apparently can't even post links to more than 2 youtube vids per post... This is a live version, and the band's bassist doesn't actually play it (still not sure why), but I don't think I'll ever tire of listening to this song, the bass providing the melody while the guitars swirl around it is just sublime. I will never know how a 3 piece managed to sound this huge, even live.

More left-field than most of these suggestions, but mine are probably: I just love his bass line, ridiculously simple but just so perfect. One of my favourite songs of all times so it's no surprise I like the bassline, but I think it's really creative. Fitting a good bassline around 2 guitars, keyboards, strings, vocals and a very busy drum part can't be easy, but I love the way the bass meanders around everything. Every instrument is doing it's own thing but it never sounds cluttered, at least to me.

https://soundcloud.com/bobbass4k/as-violet-braces-myrrh Quickly trimmed down, not really how I'd planned it but I won't get time to improve it so here it is. The title is actually cryptically christmasy, a shiny internet cookie for anyone who figures it out.

Did we ever settle on a time limit? My spurt of ambient self indulgence currently sits at 18 minutes, what should I be aiming to whittle it down to?
Check this bad boy out - choral arrangement of the Battlestar Galactica vesion.
Speaking of the BSG version... I think I prefer it to the Hendrix version to be honest, the eastern twist and the power chord chug are great.
I dont like crtitisizing anyone who can play 'better' than i can, it makes me feel something of a fraud, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em. Less is more.
The trouble is a lot of people think like that and they shouldn't, music (to me at least) isn't about how many notes you can play per minute. A lot of these sorts of players act like there's some sort of league table and whoever can play the most notes "wins" at bass. That's just not how I view music, and I don't see why that opinion is somehow invalid because they can play more notes per minute than I can (because ALWAYS what those types of players mean by "best"). For context, this is one of my favourite basslines, definitely better than whatever that guy's playing (naughty language warning, nuns should not proceed):

Definitely back in this month, that picture for me conjures up ambient gloom drone because it's kinda depressing, or fast heavy post-hardcore riff-fest, because clearly a lively night of drinking has preceded it, can't decide which to opt for.

BC's new classifieds section - your opinions please
So do we all like the sound of a single payment for a one off advert and the option of a single yearly payment?
No, with no guarantee of selling I think up front payments just for placing ads are going to put members off and prove a giant headache for you. -

A fixed £20 fee would definitely put me off selling, ATM I only sell a couple pedals a year on here, and £20 up front to list less £150 worth of stuff that isn't guaranteed to sell, and in fact probably won't sell just isn't worth it. Probably half the stuff I've ever listed here I've either given up on selling or had to take to eBay, so an up front fee is just stupid, what if I pay my £20 in January, list a few things, but by December I've not sold anything, would you refund my fee? The marketplace just isn't reliable enough to justify an up front fee. A capped percentage of all sales might work, but you'd probably just get people factoring it into their prices like they do with paypal fees, raising prices so potentially they don't sell. As much as it pains me to say it, I think what TB do is pretty sensible, anyone can view and reply to classifieds, but only supporting members can post them. A TB supporting membership is $20, which is cheaper than the £20 you're proposing and gives other benefits besides just classifieds. The problem though is that you'd probably have to remove features from a regular membership to give to the supporting members, like avatars, signatures and the like. Personally I would pay £10 or £15 a year for a supporting membership, but you'd probably have a backlash from people who don't want to pay when their avatars disappear or they can't post ads any more. I know we have significantly less members than TB so it might not end up being worth it, but I think it's far preferable to just paying for classifieds access. -
My answer this changes every time, today's selection: Vocals: Chino Moreno (Deftones, lovely soaring clean tones and a good scream) Vocals: Eva Spence (Rolo Tomassi, I like female rock vocalists and she's the best) Guitar: Mike Vennart (Oceansize, British Theatre and whoring himself out to Biffy Clyro) Guitar: Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai, simple, beautiful playing) Bass: Neil Mahony (Amplifier, wonderfully creative bassist) Electronics/Keyboards/Guitar: Bryant Clifford Meyer (Isis, Red Sparowes, somewhat under appreciated but I don't think Isis would have been the same without him) Drums: Mark Heron (Oceansize, Kong, technically impressive but also astoundingly creative) I'm not really sure what it would sound like but I'd pay good money to see it.

I really like it with phaser too, it can sound a bit cheesy but if use properly It think it helps high register stuff stand out.

How are we defining experimental? Is it instrumentation, structure, musical ambition? I'd probably call something like this experimental: Sure they're using guitar, bass and drums, but the guitarist uses a lot of extended techniques and prepared guitars. I can certainly hear a lot of punk and maybe some thrash influences in there, but they way combine and execute them is certainly pushing the boat out for me. Something like this as well: Or is being experimental more down to completely left-field avant-garde ideas, like Metal Machine Music or John Cage's stuff? Not just combining existing things in a new way but actually coming up with new things?

I know the thread's drifted off it but I just thought I'd clear up the initial point, Muse do not mime (apparently the Olympics performance was mimed as they all were but that's the only exception). Bellamy has a habit of singing far from the mic and his vocals set up is geared to compensate for it, they use a mic with a long range, run it through a compressor, adjust the gain manually etc. Perhaps more to the point though, I thought Jools had a blanket no miming policy?

Opened up media player to fill a boring gap in the us election coverage, and this gem was the first random selection: They used to be so good. -
