2. http://www.italiastraps.com/new-sale-page.htm Arrange with a friend to buy one each and get them for a good price. They are great.
3. I use bog standard whatever any other string player has with them. That is partly because I am fed up of finding rosin powder in my DB case pocket, but more importantly because I prefer the sound.
4. A remark you made - Weather Report http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWvSr2g4U34
5.
What are you going to do about a bigger 5 string neck with the 4 string bodies neck pocket? Your choice will be very limited in pickups if you want poles that line up with the strings. You may find you have to custom order some which will negate the savings of an off the shelf body. You could do what endorka did and have the routes enlarged a bit. It can hide pretty well if you paint the cavities black.
I have found a source for a body with 5 string routes so I am good to go. Thanks all as usual. It is good to throw ideas around
6.
Payment for 2x sets sent to you this morning via carrier pigeon.
Two sets gone and I have three left. Anyone?
7. If I could answer that I would, but I am painfully aware that my "throaty" might well equate to your "grunt' or whatever else. There is plenty of everything there with a clear mid which helps them cut through.
how would they compare to other pickups in terms of colouring?
8.
No reply yet. I'll let you know ...
IIRC it is $5500 ish.
9. I am now pretty sure that I am going to sell the bass as a whole piece. Sorry. I have two Villex (http://www.villex.com/) P pickups in EMG 45 sized cases. They are blade magnets (all enclosed) so string spacing is not an issue. They work fine and dandy, I am just going in a different direction. £150 posted
10.
My fiver has 4 banger sized pups. It currently has awesome Bill Lawrence J45s prior to that it has had Barts and a breif encounter with some surprisingly ok Hohner Jack EMGs.
I've had a look at the J45s and I am sure they are awsome, but the pole pieces (for me) need to be in standard jazz bass config. I am such a tart that it all has to look right.
11.
EMG's use the same shell and lug spacing, actually the same pickup, for 4 & 5 strings. Fender used a number of different sizes for 5's and can be a hassle to find the right one.
I am such a tart I want exposed pole pieces otherwise it will not look "right"
12. I am toying with the idea of a 5 string Jazz with a set of Aguilar pickups. If it was a 4 string I could buy the body off the shelf, but the lugs in the pickups are just too far apart, unless someone actually make J5 pickups with the lugs in the same place as those on J4 pickups. Any ideas?
13. Here is a thread about a luthier making a 6.5 pound Jazz. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot...bass-build.html
14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwYoi9G67DU...player_embedded I know how foam and even an old sock change the attack of strings but I had never heard felt mutes in action. It is different and I like it.
15. I ran into this build on TB and thought others might enjoy it. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot...bass-build.html
16. They appear on Ebay in the US now and again and the going rate seems to be sub $1000. If I played guitar I would be all over this one like a rash http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
17.
I would love one, but how much?
I have one of those as well. I have too many basses. I have issues. I would recommend playing one first. It is not super comfy sitting down, it is slightly Flying V-esque in that it slides off your leg, and the way the strap sits means it hangs further to the right than a "normal" bass does. Also the smaller body means that your right hand wrist angle changes when sitting down. Make no mistake, it is an absolutely superb piece of kit, but for me, YMMV, it has meant a slight re-appraisal of what little technique I have. It does sound like one long string with very little tonal difference (in a really good way) between strings and is super light and easy to transport.
18.
Let's be honest, we both know why I didn't mention the Bolin... because I'm buying the next one that becomes available! Any way Owen, you're a bit late to the party here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=114484
I think you will find it is uncool to be early or even on time to parties. I am there now
19. I'd post a pic of mine, but it is here already. If I was honest I have a love hate relationship with mine. I have sold it and bought it back once already (as I have with my Demeter and my Streamline - if you ever buy anything from me, be prepared to sell it back) The Piezo is lush beyond. The EMG DC that was in it was harsher than........... a harsh thing. I now have an EMG P in it which is much nicer, but there is a volume differential now. It is out on loan at the moment but IIRC there is massive trim-pottage in the control cavity which I shall dive into when it comes back. I do not really like the neck profile, which is odd because I am really a bass tart and will go with any bass usually. I love the shape, I love the weight, I love the wood, I love the locking machines. I have just put a piezo bridge on another bass and am experimenting with pre-amps to see if I can replicate the piezo lushness (did I mention that the piezo sound was lush?). The ACG pre in a box I have seems to be quite close at the moment. The Piezo in the Bolin is all I thought they should be but I had never actually heard. I am not particularly fussed about the airy top end (but it is certainly there), it is the rich as chocolate low end which sends me (maaaan). The bottom end seems to extend all the way down. It is not a muddy rumble, just really clean and smooth with real LF extension. It sits REALLY well with acoustic instruments in a way that all my active basses over the years do not quite manage for me (and I have come to the stage where I am not particularly bothered what anyone else thinks). I might get the neck re-shaped. I might sell it. I might leave it as it is - it is safe to say no other bass has snared me with it's sound quite like this one. It is well phit.

21. Shame on you for not sharing the Bolin love. They are pretty rare (not as in vintage and all that) but they come up now and again and are very light indeed. The fact that they have the best piezo tone ever (yes I stated that as a fact even though it is only any opinion) is a bonus as well. http://www.bolinguitars.com/features.html
I have the self same trouble. There are light basses out there but to save yourself grief I'd define what you mean by light! IMHO it needs to be lighter than 9lb to qualify as light, whereas I've bought basses off Basschat whereby owners have made claims of 'featherweight' and 'the lightest bass I've ever owned'... one can only assume that the latter comment was from someone economical with the truth, who has only ever owned one bass as the bass in question was closer to 11lb! The Fender Precision Lyte basses are pretty light and many of the new CV Jazz and Precision basses are around about 9lb (the two I've owned were just over). Though many claim that the Lakland Skylines 'can' be light I've yet to find one that is genuinely under 9lb (x2 DJ's were both way over 9lb and the JO was the 11lb offender). As has been mentioned there is the 'cricket bat' option and SOME hollowbodies (though beware some of them have solid cores and the extra large body size on some, really bumps the weight), such as the violin basses. If your budget stretches you can find some very lightweight Warwick Streamer basses but they need to be the early to mid 80's ones; I have two, one of them is 7lb 7oz the other about 8lb. I also have a Zon Sonus which is 8.5lb. The obvious which I'm sure you already do is to wear a nice wide strap. Best of luck from a fellow sufferer.
22. Of course, I could just sell them. £14 posted each set. They are from a bulk pack that came with my bass when I bought it so not in packets, but brand new.
23. £70 Posted Want it you know you do. Edited because I cannot even spell the pedal name properly. The shame....................
24. I have 4 sets of 45 gauge SS roundwounds for 5 string. I am looking for something lighter in double ball strings. Plastic wrapped, flat, whatever......... I just fancy a different flavour.
25. I kept the Demeter and sold the Avalon. Don't get me wrong, the Avalon had RIGHTEOUS tone, just the lack of EQ was an issue with my Double Bass for live work. It needs taming. I would love to have both, but that would be silly.
