1. They'll be fine for a piccolo bass. While I like a nicely turned knurl, I wouldn't feel happy tuning this way despite the reduction gearing. It's just about okay on the direct pull tuners on a Steinberger bridge but even then I wish sometimes for more positive finger engagement that knurling simply does not give you. It isn't an issue on the Steinys so much because they're fairly stable and less likely to drift off tune. On a headstock however...
 2.
He should have left his VISOR on!!
I thought he had the visor fitted after that music vid as a direct consequence of retinal trauma from seeing that huge red codpiece!
 3.
80s at its best imho!!
Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) from Star Trek TNG is in this vid.
 4.
Thought I was blacklisted as far as credit / finance is concerned due to a mobile phone bill(s) a couple of years ago, so it was with tongue planted firmly in cheek when I tried to get a Bass Whammy on the knock from G.A.K. BUT THEY ONLY BLOODY WENT FOR IT!! Only drawback being : I have to 'borrow' at least £250. The Bass Whammy is £139 so I've a bit to play with IF I decide to throw caution to the wind and go for it. You know what tho?? There really is NOTHING I particularly want / need (except the Whammy, I stupidly sold mine recently and have SERIOUS sellers remorse!!!) without spending TOO much. I thought about a Dirty Robot but being a BSW owner, decided against. I also thought about a Freqout but jogged that idea on. A superego would be nice but being a Freeze owner yada yada (plus at £199 it's a trifle expensive). I also toyed with the idea of a 3 way crossover so I could finally build that 3 stack system of my dreams, but decided against that for s few reasons Hahahahahaha What made the shortlist is a Boss RC3 looper. I'm sure I could utilise one, not for soloing over myself (I'm no soloist) but just to add some weird textures to some tracks in my electronica outfit. Any thoughts for or against anything chaps and chapesses ?? Any bright ideas before I tick that 'I have read the t&c' box ??
I would say you're better off without credit.
 5. If I remember right not all was well in the trouser area at the time. Larry Blackmon tried to out-trouser everyone. The effect was so shocking that a massive public outcry resulted in MC Hammer being forced to knit a pair of Snailsburys gold lamé carrier bags together about his nethers before he was allowed to strut on national TV. The Eighties were worrying in many ways. The threat of global nuclear war was only one thing to fret about.
 6.
You guys still have hippies? Blue
I think it's fairer to say we have druggies who prefer the term hippie, new age traveller, druid etc. If you want me, I'll be in my flame-proof bunker.
 7.
Slap has been badly abused...
Social services take note.
 8.
Sure but I only play st OM nights and get zero practice time so it's my best option
Fair enough. (You're not a nun either are you?)
 9.
I A/B'd some basses recently and the hum / buzz on the single coil basses was VERY noticeable when compared to a double coil / humbucker. Interestingly my mate said he did not have the same issue when he played at home, which is outside London. Don't know if the fact that his was an older generation bass(circa 2000)would have made a difference i.e. does coil hum get worse over time? Just wondering whether others have noticed a difference between being playing in cities, particularly e.g. London with tube / train lines never too far away? Perhaps another illustration of this is that the hum on our guitarist's single coil PUP Fender Strat is particularly noticeable when my band has rehearsed in studios under railway arches. Is there a straightforward solution to this which does not effect the tone of the bass or require a different set of PUPs? If not, I think choosing the humbucker rather than single coil option (or at least a combination single coil J plus humbucker) on a replacement bass will need to be part of the equation for me. Cheers AK
Have you got fluorescent lighting under the arches? I'd say there is a fair chance that a low ceiling with those would be more suspect whilst not discounting trackside equipment interference completely. Also, are you sure you haven't got an earth loop in there somewhere? We were chatting about bridge grounding at the bass bash last week and there are things you can do to get an improvement. I am quite sure someone will be along with that shortly.
 10. I should think these really earn their keep for top heavy eq settings on rigs with HF drivers. I wont need one just yet as I don't put much treble out.
 11.
I used one at my graduation concert, on a 5-string with high C in an alternate tuning (can't remember what it was ) to play a James Vincent McMorrow song. https://www.youtube....h?v=AtmYzr4pcD0
Beautiful. Best of all... neither of you looked like nuns!
 12.
i shamelessly use a capo when I'm feeling too tired to think about moving a pattern to another key I've not troubled what anyone else thinks
I like the idea as a "get out of jail free" option to have in the bag when jamming but I'd want to relearn, in my own time, the tune on an open fretboard later. I don't have any tunes in my rep that require special tunings other than drop D for which I have a five. I like to keep things simple.
 13.
You missed one....Fashion. My bro bought a Precision in 1981 when we were in the same band, as it was the bass to have, it was a Fender after all. It had a number of dead spots on the neck, and he was not surprisingly for a newbie, a little shocked. He was told by experienced bassists to learn how to play around them. He wished he hadnt traded in the Rick.
I dunno Mikel. I reckon fashion is a symptom of snobbery or snobbery a symptom of fashion. Whatever way around they are they often go hand in hand. I bought a Squier fretless Jazz in the eighties out of brand snobbery because it had the F word on it in familiar lettering. It had all the looks. Favourable comments from everyone who saw it gave me a boost and made me feel fashionable. In the first week of ownership I thought I'd found a shallow depression around the 10th and 11th fret position on the D string where the notes dropped off a little. Back at the shop it was examined and found to be okay. It was a dead spot. I was told to try a new set of strings. About that time I had discovered a problem with the guitar's massive headstock. During practice in a small bedroom belonging to the drummer I'd have trouble avoiding the doorways, walls and heads of my band mates. He had both bed and drum kit in there and we'd fit in as best we could. As we were a four piece band it was cozy to say the least and the guitar felt even more clumsy and unwieldy than usual. I went back to playing my mate's left handed guitar while I arranged to trade the Squier in for the Vantage that I still own. In fairness there are many things that guitarists and bassists "play around" to get the desired result. Often it is an unconscious thing, particularly with time served players. Sometimes it is such a thorn in your side that it will make you reluctant to plug the instrument in at all.
 14. So... you don't actually need to dress as a nun to get good use from one? Much relieved. I'll have a crate of those then please.
 15.
Thanks guys, I had assumed that latency was likely to be the biggest issue, interestingly a number of the links above look to be to quite old software requiring systems like Windows 98 to work so hopefully there is newer faster technology available.
Digital technology inevitably suffers from lag simply because of the analogue-digital-analogue process. It can only get so fast before physical limitations stop further refinement. It was said above that <10ms lag is acceptable. If that is the consensus of those who regularly use Internet connections for rehearsal then there already is sufficiently fast tech available. It is merely a question of identifying it then being in a position to afford it.
 16.
I've did it with my squier VM telecaster bass, the 70s style one with the big humbucker. I went the whole hog though with a vintage neck tint and darkened headstock face and old stle decal. I don't see any harm in it, I enjoy having it done - it's for me alone and there's no malice in it. I fancied a 70s style telebass to go with my 51RI so I had both TB models but I'd have to sell my 77 Jazz or my child to fund one. Did it cheap with the squier and the paintwork and some extra chrome. I like it. The question is now, do I go for a cream or parchment scratchplate or leave it black?
Why not replace the body with a flying V? It's a proper bitsa then. I'm only pulling your leg. I am all for customising according to personal taste. That's why it's called customising. I just don't like unlicensed mass produced stuff.
 17.
Has anyone here used - or seen a bass player using - a capo? There's a fairly naff trio local to me whose bass player uses a capo for almost every song. Often on a different fret to the two guitarists, which makes it even more peculiar. I understand that, on a standard 6-string guitar, there's an offset from the G to B string, which makes it hard to transpose, so the capo effectively shifts the nut. And that that's why a 5-string bass player who wants to go higher rather than lower tunes to high C rather than to B. But on a standard 4-string bass, why not just learn where the notes are on the fret board and play them? Or am I missing something???
Good question. I'd hate to have to use one myself but it's simply because it reminds me of nuns with guitars trying to be "down with the youth".
 18. It's going to be laggy. Not sure what the best work-around is for that but one idea would be to get an audio only connection so that there is less data to be encoded and decoded in real time.
 19.
The BIG update is here. I have the bass back, it is 200% better than it was but due to a rise at the heel end of the neck it could not be done to Terry's satisfaction and as a result he did not charge me for the re-fret or the time spent.. It will need to have the rosewood taken off the neck, planed down and then reset again. I do not have the money for that right now but I WILL be getting it done by Terry. The P-Ups are dead so they will go away for a rewind in good time, until then, I have used the ones from my HCT and they are identical and sound GREAT. The action is well playable especially for traditional SKA it makes for a very 'upright' sound, I love it. Here are some photos, I bought Terry a very nice bottle of wine as a 'thank you', I have a lot of work done with Terry, he is always bang on the money & honest.
It's looking lovely. It's also great to hear that it is playable despite the remaining problems. Well done to Terry and yourself.
 20.
That is the funniest YouTube video I've seen this year. Literally laughed out loud. There's definitely a marketing opportunity there.. "New addition to our spring range - The Buttery Biscuit Bass" - but which manufacturer would be most likely to make it?
Greg Wallace and John Torode's TV shows were sampled by Shaun Keaveny of 6music's breakfast show. The presenter uses the sound bites to punctuate his routine and sometimes it's laugh out loud funny. Favourite quotes are "Stop! Stop touching it." and "That piece of meat had everyone confused". http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/bbc_6music
 21.
Hopefully not! But I see they are doing a 30th anniversary model at the moment - so maybe in 10 years' time..?
But then you'll be fifty and I'll be sixty four. Will you still need me, will you still feed me?
 22. Does anyone else think that the Modfather's voice is going a bit Axl Rose? I actually thought it was Axl singing on the radio when they played one of Paul's new releases the other day. Might be chronic constipation. I'll have to watch the repeat of LWJ on Friday to see what's going on.
 23.
You have obviously met our guitarist then? It's learn to fly by Foo Fighters, stupid really as it's such a simple song. I think it's partly because it's one of my favourite songs, I just get lost in the chorus. I played again last night after posting this and not sure if it's the guitar or the vocals that are throwing me. It just all goes a bit sex pistols live free for all style. I can play it 100% without thinking on its own. I will give the ideas on here a try and keep at it.
I get the impression that you've really got the bit between your teeth on this one. If that's so it's understandable. If you haven't taken a break from the song since picking it up then consider doing so, completely. If time allows you to take a whole day away from it I'd recommend that. Play something as different from the tricky song as you can, go and have a coffee, come back and play something different again. As you let go you might just get that eureka moment where something "clicks" subconsciously and you're there. I have every confidence in you. You'll be fine.
 24.
sit down with your guitarist for a while and ask him about his gear. Focus especially on his effects pedals and why he uses "this setup for this track" etc. After two hours of listening to him drone on about that you will find it easier to ignore any other noise he makes! (it's a service I provide this - NEXT!)
Excellent.
 25.
I can get an old door and shelf if you want to do a swap...
I tried something similar at the bash. When Jabba won the raffle I stole my chance and suggested that he could make room in his car for his new acoustic guitar by letting me have that remarkable piezo. I wasn't bothered that it isn't actually finished. My cunning plan failed. Dang.
