That's all well and good but where is the duck? I hear no quacking. Heeheehee, great photo of a lovely looking instrument anyway. -

May I suggest a broaching tool for forming internal splines without brutalising the job too much? A man of your calibre would find it easy to make one from an unwanted splined spindle of the same dimensions as the pot(s) you are making the knob for. You will be less susceptible to split knobs this way. (You boys at the back - STOP chortling. It gets smuttier later.) Assuming you make each knob as a capped hollow cylinder like @Norris's, in theory, this should work: Drill your wood cylinders to just clear the root diameter of the splines. Get an unwanted splined spindle made from mild steel as aluminium wont be tough enough. File the splines. You are aiming to make to make a taper from the end of the spindle to about 2mm short of where the splines run in to the plain portion of the spindle shaft. You want the pointy end to have a diameter just less than that of the spline roots and you want about 2mm of untouched spline going into the plain portion. Use a junior hacksaw to cut around the circumference of the spindle at 1 to 2mm intervals. It should end up looking like a thread tap. Meticulously remove burrs caused by the hacksaw. You must make each spline into a column of successively larger cutting teeth. If you keep your hacksaw cuts neat and perpendicular to the centreline of the spindle you should end up with a tool that can be used to nibble out bits of wood with an internal filing action. I'd suggest clamping the wood cylinder to your pedestal drill table. Mount your broaching tool in the chuck and use careful judgement of how much pressure you need to press down into the hole with and how far to go with each progressive stroke. Ultimately you should have perfectly formed splines and little internal stress within the remaining wood fibres. Alternatively, you could search the web for a proprietary broach for the purpose. Broaching Some Pictures of Shiny Bits of Tool Steel Some More Pictures of Expensive Cutting Tools PS: If you do the splines before you shape your wood it's easiest. Then the splines can help in that you can mount the splined wood blank on a splined mandrel (another unwanted spindle) in your chuck prior to shaping. -

I know. You've mentioned before. I haven't visited it yet, sorry. I was just hoping to raise a titter at your expense. -
I'd personally have no problem doing the extra for a band mate who's unable for whatever reason. In fact I'd happily look for disabled musicians to work with. The only thing stopping me is how to get away with placing my advert on JMB without offending someone. It is a very interesting topic to introduce. I mean, for the paying public measures are taken to make venues accessible to those who don't get about as well as they'd like. From my limited experience this doesn't happen for those backstage, certainly in smaller venues. My big drawback is that I gave up driving so I'm off to look at that thread mentioned in your OP again.

Where do you store your bass gear?

Bassically, anywhere you lay your hat I suppose? I want to be you when I grow up Les. -
Where do you store your bass gear?

I have two music rooms. One at the front of the house and one at the back with a scullery between it and the living room/kitchen area. My housemate practices uke in the front room and I practice bass in back. Two combo amps, four basses and a clutch of ukes are stored in the front room. I keep my bass of the day on a stand near the telly in the living room for finger exercising without amp. I have a further combo and ext cab stored in the back room. We're detached and I have no spouse. One day, when I've properly sorted out the last of my late Mum's vast collection of stuff, I hope to have the room to invite friends back for music sessions before I refill the place with my own clutter. I know when I'm well off. -
Welcome Pete. It wouldn't be the first time that set-up for that particular brand has been discussed here. I'll say no more other than it can get a bit marmite. You'll see when you do a search. There are also many gigging Ricky owners here so you should get a good response overall. Enjoy the ride.

That'd be one of your PG Tips then...? -
Say what you like about TOTP being contrived and controlled by the old boy network. Those of us who were there watching the telly at seven O'clock every Thursday evening are still talking about it and remembering artists as if they had attended the performances themselves. Thirty years from now, I don't think we'll remember so many of the equally good, sometimes better, artists of today even with instantaneous global communication and clever marketing. In its day TOTP was the sole source of video* promotion for bands. Apart from posters, album artwork and pop magazines you could only guess what a band might look like as you listened to a low-fi MW transistor radio. God forbid that you should tune that lovely warm sounding valve radio set to a pop station. Your parents would have a fit. Today there are so many promoters and outlets for video that that marketing power has been diluted for them all. In this century, mistakes are easy to edit out and that perfect image of how the promoter wants you to be seen is preserved in binary forever. As a consequence of quality editing it is rare to see the day to day foul-ups that occur. These days the bits that are edited out are kept for collectors of bloopers who are looking to market a collection of out-takes. More revenue for someone I suppose. Personally, I like to see how bands used to cope with stuff like that when they were dropped in it, so to speak. Today everyone has the option of 'phoning a friend' if they're the slightest bit uncomfortable. *In this instance, just for convenience, lets ignore the fact that the term video became popular later.

Hi Geoff. I hope you don't plan on leaving the forum.

I've done something along those lines myself. I wanted to move on to a five but until I was able to play through some tunes with no stalls and a minimum of errors I wouldn't look at them. I promised myself one if I could string some of those tunes together on random play, as it were, with no hesitation. Once achieved I relished the search for an affordable new bass. The only other bass that I have bought brand new was a kit. I had about 40 or so songs in my repertoire before I went on to a five. That was a Steinberger paddle bass. I was starting to find some of its limitations after a couple of years of happy ownership but then I bought a kit resembling one of the guitars that I was curious about. I enjoyed building it. It even sounded good. It helped me make the decision to buy my latest one, an Ibanez as it happens. The kit built instrument is now a test bed for modifications down the line.

This is where projects start to pay you back. Up 'till the finishing processes they always seems to go slower than slow with nothing really to show you what it's going to be like. Looking good.

'Nozcaster' Priceless -
I knew a chap once who bought a laptop bag just to pretend he owned a laptop. That was when they were something special. I pretty sure he paid a lot more than £24 too. Turns out, these days they're of more practical value than the laptop that should reside in them. Heeheehee well done that man.

That view down the neck from the end of the headstock is lovely. You know your curves young man. I like how neat your wiring is too. -
Welcome Laura. It sounds like you got the GAS before the bass. It's great that you followed through despite adversity. Beware of our For Sale section though. You might be sorely tempted.

Aw. It's always a pity when an idea doesn't pan out. At least you looked at it. Maybe you could open a national counselling and therapy centre for owners of music shop businesses that have gone bust?

For the cab experts; When a cab is tuned to a frequency, 50Hz in this instance, is the effect to accentuate or attenuate the sound for that frequency please?

I have 2 KEF Q300s at the rear positions of my surround rig. They are indeed superb. They're compact because of the concentric design but they fill the room with well defined sound. If I hadn't already got a pair of 30 y/o Heco Superiors at the front they'd be the next choice. I don't like how they look without the grills. It doesn't matter though, the grill cloth is tidy and understated. These days I treat my living room gear like Victorians treated their children only in reverse. They are to be heard and not seen. OP; I run these off of a Denon AVR-X3000. I think it was stated to be capable of about 100w per. It starts to get uncomfortable in the living room above 60 percent for strong clean signals but sometimes it's nice to have the headroom and at 80 percent it's still in no danger of breaking into a sweat. Happy hunting.

Rock N Roll Guns for Hire: The Story of the Sideman The above link is saying it is no longer available on the BBC iPlayer but this was an illuminating documentary that I saw last year. It might have been on YT too but it looks like it's been pulled. If you search BBCA from where you are and it shows up let me know please?
