  1. I thought the only choices were fingers or plectrum. You live and learn.
  2. When Jack was making one of his ukuleles he did it this way. He pressed the frets in with a modified mole grips that applied an even pressure across each fret. The fretboard became quite curved with the combined pressure of all the fret tangs and it required a firm clamping when he glued it down. I can't remember the overall thickness of the fretboard but it's worth having a bit of extra meat on it if you do it this way.
  3. 7:40 "The shagbut... which is a two man trombone." [Titter] I love those diagrams. I reckon @Frank Blank had something to do with them. Great post. I always like to hear about the BBC boffins. Has @Smanth seen this? Oops. I just twanged my gibbering strings.
  4. Done. I'm interested to see how this goes. Decent tune too.
  5. Best wishes for a successful procedure and speedy recovery. In the meantime... one handed tuba?
  6. Yes. It's not like it grows on trees.
  7. Rob Strong. Singing bassist. I used to see him perform in the Harcourt Hotel basement in Dublin in the eighties.
  8. Billy Ocean. He has three lungs you know. Fact. Merrill Garbus has a fair set (of lungs) on her. Good thing she's got a gob that can handle it.
  9. My Vantage fretless is all black. It looks like the fingerboard is rosewood stained black. The only markings are the side dots. It had roundwounds from new and consequently the finish is less than perfect now. The lighter rosewood shows through in places. I wondered about restaining it but was told promptly by our Jack to leave it. I have since put black nylon tapewounds on and they suit the bass much better as well as being kinder to the fingerboard. I have to admit I prefer the worn in look now.
  10. You may be lucky and get a good match with your veneer but I'm betting that even if others can't see the lines, you won't be able to unsee them. There will be a difference in the direction of the wood grain for starters. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.
  11. Community. No question. I have felt the love on more than one occasion.
  12. You do know that this will upset some folk don't you? Good. Carry on.
  13. £80 for the transfer fee?!? That's feckin' outragious.
  14. An alternative to a cocktail stick is a bamboo kebab skewer with a dab of glue. It was @Andyjr1515 wot told me that, it was.
