1.
Really? In what way? I ask because it's a true bypass switch, so the bypass isn't touching the circuitry.....which means it won't tone suck by design. It would surprise me if the Tender Octaver Pro sounds the same (as good?) as the previous version. EHX has it shut down for a reason, I suspect the algorithm Mooer used being too similar if not the same as the POG. So they likely had to change it for the Pro. Si
it's weird, because it should be a true bypass and leave the clean signal alone. I've been fooling around for a while with chinese knockoff pedals and the true bypass is what they always screw me with. the joyo ultimate drive I got was also buffered. I haven't checked with the power supply unplugged to confirm whether it is or isn't a true bypass, but in the end I never missed the thing, so it stayed off the pedalboard.
If Thomann get it in stock I may order it and take advantage of the 30 day guarantee. As you pointed out, it was discontinued for a reason so to make another under the same name suggests somethings changed.
amazon is selling it as well. you can try with them too.
 2. I have a tender octaver. They show up in amazon time to time and you can also get them from aliexpress I believe (I got mine there). The effect works excellent. The bypass sucks the soul out of the clean tone pretty bad. Because of that I don't use it.
 3. Forgive my ignorance: is that a beta 12a? How much would shipping to Vienna cost?
 4. darn!
It's a Bass-Mid P.A unit and only handles the nominal power down to about 200Hz !! xMax is feeble at 1.29mm. Below approx 200Hz,
hey balcro! thanks for your reply. how do you get to the 200Hz limit? I'm just starting reading speaker specs and still have to find my way around all the data. I completely misread the 1.29mm and the 9.5mm. it must have been the 100th speaker I input today.
I assume that the plans list acceptable drivers and/or TS specs. Use them to find a driver that will work. Also, if you go sealed rather than ported you lose a lot of low end output. That's OK if it's what you're after, not so much if it isn't. You only get one chance to do it right the first time.
yes, I'm OK with the reduced lows on the cab. it's completely intentional. this is only about experimenting, really but good thing there's winISD and this forum.
The only specialist thing you need is a 70mm holesaw for the ports http://www.screwfix....CFaIx0wodNTwPDg which you can drive using your drill.
it's precisely the ports that are holding me back to start building the cab. I've already failed miserably doing small circle cuts when I did my bookshelf speakers (took me a few tries) and I just want to postpone it as much as I can.
 5. I'm still considering alternatives before building the basschat1x12™. I'm looking into building a sealed cab because of the much simpler construction (and would also need less tools I don't have). I found this speaker that simulate quite nicely for a sealed enclosure, it's the Selenium 12-PW3. it's about 75€ Here are the specs (sorry about the german words):

Belastbarkeit (Nenn/Musik) = 175/400 W
Frequenzbereich = 55-5000 Hz
Resonanzfrequenz fs = 50 Hz
Impedanz R = 8 Ohm
Kennschalldruck SPL = 97 dB (2,83V; 1m)
Gleichstromwiderstand Re = 6,4 Ohm
Kraftfaktor BL = 9,9 N/A
Schwingspuleninduktivität L = 1,611 mH
Effektive Membranfläche Sd = 510 cm[sup]2[/sup]
Bewegte Masse incl. Luftlast mms = 36,9 g
Äquivalentvolumen Vas = 97 l
Freiluftgesamtgüte Qts = 0,69 (Qms=7,95, Qes=0,75)
Durchmesser der Schwingspule = 46 mm
Lineare Auslenkung x[sub]lin[/sub] = +/- 9,5 mm
Einbaudurchmesser d = 279 mm
Aussendurchmesser d = 308 mm
Einbautiefe (nicht eingefräst) t = 124 mm
Gewicht m = 3,94 kg
I've attached the results I got from WinISD. Yellow is for the Beyma SM212, Green is for The Box 12-280/a (from Thomann) and Pink the Selenium. [I can't get the images to show correctly on the forum- here's an imgur link: http://imgur.com/a/gYjC6 } All three in a 40 liters box. The selenium gives a -3dB at 70Hz. And has a nice efficiency on paper. Has anybody had any experience with this brand? Cheers!
 6. Found it last week in the second hand listings. Its the old version, not the v2 selling now in stores. The guy gave it away as a small practice amp thinking it was the usual useless crap, so I took it for 30 euros. I've been triggering people here for a while with my amp/cam woes, but I had to take it to the next level and see for myself. I play in a goth/hard rock trio (yes, still!). Drummer is moderately loud, nothing out of control. Guitarrist is verdy decent with his volume too (he has a 100W valve head but it's never past 2/10 - complete wwaste if you ask me, he's nowhere near enjoying the artifacts of the valves). I put this thing on the side, turned it up to 5/10 and had to turn it down because it was too loud! Finished practice at 4/10 still with the feeling I should have turned it down further. Not only that but the sound was much better than anything I played before. I used lots of different 4x10s live and owned an ashdown 2x10 and a random 2x12. Especially with these last two I had always the problem of the E string being too loud and out of control somehow. I twiddled with the PU height with no success, but this seemed to do it. Insanely happy with this thing!
 7.
I used an SWR Workingmans10 combo for a long time with a pub covers band.
that looks interesting!
Since you've already got the MB200, why not keep that and pick up a small, light cab? I have done this with a GK MB200 and a 1x10" cab (I had an EA Wizzy 10 for a few years, and currently have a home built 1x10" for that job). It sounds a lot better than most cheap small combos and the head and cab together fit in a padded cajon bag with a shoulder strap.
I'm actually waiting for the wood I ordered to build the basschat 1x12 cab
Watts are only half the story (keeping the story simple) the other half is the efficiency of the the speakers. The sensitivity tell you how many dB's you'll get with one watt and then you can work out how many you'll get with one particular amp. Let's say you have a speaker that gives you 94dB for 1W, Doubling the power gives you an extra 3dB and ten times the power gives you 10dB extra. 100W will give you 114db through this speaker Now swap the speaker for something efficient, 100db for each watt, this will give you the same 20dB extra with a 100W amp or 120dB. To make the first speaker as loud you need two lots of 3db more power which means four times as much or 400W. Now 120dB happens to be about the sound level needed to work with an average drummer, and so long as your drummer is average that's the level to aim at, roughly. A bit more detail if you want https://www.ultimate...ng_it_loud.html
nice writeup. details on that are always fuzzy, thanks.
 8. I'm on a quest to find out what's the smallest usable amp. I'm relatively new to bass, I've only been playing for the last couple of years. I've played drums several years in different bands, and guitar before that, but bass specific gear is just now starting to demystify. Using the internet as the source of information has already taught me the expensive lesson that not everything is as significant as people say online. Years have passed and today speakers are much more efficient. There is no intrinsic need for an 8x10 if you need volume. Same goes for amps. You may prefer one sound over the other, but class D amps are loud and light with no compare. The other thing is where I get to use my gear. I live and play in Vienna, Austria. Most of my gigs here so far have been in pubs with PA support. The one time we played a massive stage there was already a backline available. So far I never had to bring my cab to a gig although I bought a "light" 2x12 with that purpose. I only take my amp because it fits in the pedalboard (MB200 is the best thing ever) and I prefer to use that as a DI as whatever they have on the venue. So this leaves the practice room to be the only place my rig gets to be used. And only turning the knob up until 9 o'clock, otherwise is too loud. I'm in contact with a guy selling an Ampeg BA110, tiny "practice" amp, that according to someone in talkbass is "super loud", even for small church gigs. The thing is 35Watts, so I'm likely going too low, but the curiosity took the best of me. And for 30€ is a fun experiment. Even trying to future proof this extreme concept I can see myself using an amp like this on stage just for monitoring purposes. After experiencing the venues around here a bit, I really see no point in going much bigger than this. Yes, headroom. Yes, I can't turn it up to 11 and expect it to sound/behave the same. I'll let you know how this goes. By the way, what's the smallest amp you gigged with? Cheers!
 9. one of the best amps out there, hands down.
 10. once again, thanks everybody for the answers! clearly I'm not the first to go through this type of situation, and I'll certainly won't be the last. I had my share of bands (I'm 32, it's just normal) but probably because it's always been in my home country and with people with whom I had more in common, this is the first time I'm in such a dramatic situation for an activity I take as a serious hobby.
Seems to me you need to be clear in your mind about what you want. You obviously enjoy the band but, more important, do you feel it has a future, or are you just playing in it to keep your hand in/until something better comes along? Given that you and the drummer obviously don't gel, seems you might not be finding it too rewarding. That isn't likely to change, if my experience is anything to go by. You say your point of view is ignored - another bad sign. It appears that you have been talked into reconsidering by the "manager". Do you think you "overreacted"? If you said what you honestly felt, that isn't overreaction. It's just the truth and no point in denying it to yourself. You obviously don't want to trek 350km to play to nobody (nor would a lot of us). Why not tell them you won't do that job, but that you are still interested in playing with them provided some things change (like your views being heard and proper discussion and action about the future) and see what the response is. You've nothing to lose if they say no.
the issues with the drummer are actually what I dislike the most about playing with these guys. I thought of going away twice already only because of this guy. I'm sure I could find common ground with the singer, but having to tip toe around two people out of three so I get no nasty reactions? I'm not looking forward to that. And I'm so torn only because I really like the music we play. Although it's a country capital with great living standards, the city is very much like a village- nothing going on most of the time, not much of a true "Rock culture". This guys were like an oasis in the desert. if you listen to the music, many songs won't be out of the ordinary, but for the local scene, they kind of are. I didn't even think about just saying no to this particular gig. might be interesting to try. nevertheless, I would be forcing them to give up the gig as well- this is not the place where you can find a spare bassist. I feel what I'm having is mostly the "after breakup" feeling. since I wrote this the whatsapp group has been very active, which is very unusual. talking about festivals where we could play, which hints me of trying the same things still. and on top of that the drummer mockingly saying "I'm out of the band", "I'm depressed, you hurt my feelings". so I suppose nothing's new there.
 11. thanks everyone for the input!
Have I understood the issue correctly? The band has a new manager. Previously the guitarist was the band leader. The band wants to do a gig 350km away for a crowd of about five? You don't want to do it. A discussion after everyone has had time to cool down and think has been suggested by your new manager. Did the band leader (guitarist) agree? Unless I have missed something I'd agree with your new manager. The issue of commitment should be be discussed in less stressful circumstances after everyone has had time to give the proposal due consideration. You need to decide how strongly you feel about staying with the band if the band is to move forward. I hope I have not misunderstood and that you can all move forward in a workman like way. If this is the first time that you have made your feelings known to the band - good. Hopefully discussion can continue with input from ALL members under the guidance of your new manager. I wish you all success. Can you put a link here to your clip please? The band sounds interesting. ...
everyone agreed to the meeting (the drummer a bit reluctantly and with a few snarky remarks). the 5 people crowd is potential. maybe more people, who knows? but the guy putting it together has a horrible record. Here are a few links to our music- I'm VERY CURIOUS what would you consider the music genre to be in this case. For me it's NOTHING to do with Gothic, but I suppose you could find some common threads if you look enough. this is a mix of our album presentation: https://www.youtube....h?v=PURFOZkPurw this is the video clip of our hit song (slightly NSFW because of boobs, you have to sign in, sorry): https://www.youtube....h?v=9jGUTepSWgo and another one: https://www.youtube....h?v=4d6ABxm-jzs
 12. I kind of left my band last week. I moved to Vienna (AT) about four years ago and after a few hit and misses I started playing with this guys. The band is the drummer, guitar player, singer and me. I played it quiet for long as there was a culture shock in between (I'm from south america, so it's very different how people behave and whatnot). I adapted to the weird (for me) band dynamics: the singer very often left immediately after we played the songs we had to practice, the guitar player is the de facto benevolent dictator -luckily an excellent guy, so I had nothing against that-, and the not so good older drummer who thinks he knows best and only takes input from the guitar player only getting mildly upset. Since the band had existed for almost ten years before I came, and they had been very active once in the Goth scene, all the gigs and aesthetics revolved around that. I didn't care really. I like the music they play, although it's nothing gothic (I've posted a video in the live video's thread), and I have a fake leather jacket I can wear to gigs. Also, the fact that they had been playing for so long seems to have made them feel as if they were entitled to something, but the fact is that the crowd at the shows was only friends and wives. Which is also fine by my. It's all fine, until we start discussing the way forward. They wanted to play for more people, but there are only a few goths in Vienna. And although we played shows outside the goth scene with much "success", they didn't want to look much further and play for other people nor stop describing the music with the word "Goth" in it, when I proposed them to. Which again, would be fine by me. I'm in it for the music, I have no intention to be famous. But they seemed to feel unappreciated as band so they wanted more, but the zero crowd gigs kept hitting them hard, so we would sit and talk about it, and the discussions kept going in circles. I've played two years with them and now a friend of the band, who says has contacts in the industry, has offered herself to be the manager. She said to drop the goth-handle and broaden their audience and they said "what an excellent idea". On top of that I had the idea to express my views about playing a gig in a city about 350km from vienna, in an event organized by a guy that organizes industrial/electronic/goth parties with near zero attendance and wants us to mix it up a bit, because there will be only another band, besides the two DJs, and it's electronic. What I got was a huge speech from the singer about how I should weigh if I'm ready to comit to the band or not, because they are ready to travel how many km's are needed to play for five people, if that means playing for five people that haven heard us, and how he expects everyone in the band to bring motivation and effort. This is was the last drop, really. We met in our practice room on saturday, and very diplomatically (really) I told him f*** this sh*t. I was shocked that they were so shocked. Clearly no one in the band had possibly imagined that I could be fed up with anything (which is a bit of a testament of how unheard my voice is). It was all this (with a few more episodes of being dismissed and later on taking up the idea on their own) and the lack of possibility of interacting musically with the drummer that got to me over the two years. But again, it's their shock what got me the most now. The manager was present at the time and she talked us all into discussing this over a few beers in two weeks. I accepted only because no one saw it coming, but then it got me to think if I overreacted. Or maybe not? Phew!
 13. This is from late 2015, when we presented our CD. I came into the band after they were finished recording so the album has no compositions of mine nor it's me playing the bass... but it's me on stage! I really like how the sound turn out. damn you, youtube link!
 14. Anny thoughts on using the accelerometer on your smartphone? There are a few free apps around that allow you to make readings from it
 15.
I saw the drawing of the 1x12 cab. Was there any more detail published about construction anywhere that I missed? btw, think it's fantastic that some talented and knowledgable people are doing this sort of thing on here. Looking forward to seeing the new design.
I went through the thread a couple of times already and I found only that one drawing. It actually has all the information needed, although much of it just implied. I think you won't need anything more.
 16. I'm looking into upgrading my bass. I currently play a Cort B4 (bassically a no name SR500) which I enjoy playing a lot but I'm a bit underwhelmed with the electronics. Soaps are a pain to change, there are far more options with a PJ setup. For the money Iwoukd put into changing the pickups I could easily just change the whole bass for something better and that would give me better options in the future. I found this bass online, I havent contacted the seller yet. He doesn't seem to know exactly what he's selling (the ad just says Ibanez bass, selling it together with an IBZ3B amp, so the dates kind of match). If anything it would be a marginal upgrade I suppose? From what I read online it's a higher end bass from the mid 90s but the only thing coming up online are ebay ads. Does anybody know anything about it? Thanks!
 17. Evidently I wasn't as clear as I thought I was. English is my second language, so sorry about that. My aim was actually that knowing that most of the users here have three digit watts, and based also on the fact that more watts don't necessarily mean more volume, how much do you need to press your hardware to make it do what you want. By no means was a contest to see who the loudest is, or your abilities to understand you don't need to piss on your band members with your volume knob. Barely a meaningful stat, but nobody seems to be going past 12 o'clock (I suppose chrisanthony's 3 is from 1 to 10). This was actually was I was curious about! FWIW, me buying that 2x12 was clearly a mistake based on what I wanted, but I learned my lesson. Cheers!
 18. The watts and volume discussion has no end. It's all relative: loudness, perceived volume, headroom, whatever. Maybe this is the ultimate indicator? I play in a hard rock band (goth n roll, technically) with a medium loudness drummer. The guitar player has a 100w valve setup through a 4xsomething. My GK MB200 is never over 9 o'clock without any of the guys asking me to turn it down. It's now going through a 2x12 Noisy Box (one man shop from poland). It's a 4ohm box but I hear no difference with the ashdown 2x10 I had before with 8ohm. Every now and then I think about "upgrading" but with this reality I see no point. Theres really a lot volume on tap to go. I'm curious how far up you guys go!
 19. has anybody tried the new PSU/tuner pedal by joyo? looks fine from what I saw, but it would mean having your whole pedalboard dying in the event of a failure
 20. Man, I feel really bad derailing the thread so much, but it's almist inevitable... I imagined that the 30Hz wouldn't be much of an issue apart from the noise. I saw the graph posted by tks and understood that it's not "the most of the note" that resides so low in the frequency range but only the fundamental. I play with a 4 stringer but use an octaver so I woukd eventually have the problem of port noise. And although I don't know now exactly how it is in reality, you mentioned it as factor when choosing either 40Hz tuning or 50Hz, and that was with much lower velocities than this one. The simulation shows as well velocities over 15m/s up to about 50Hz and although that's at the highest power, coukd eventually be an issue. Still, rest assured that I changed my mind about going with the thomann speaker! The downsides keep surfacing and it will be probably for the best to base the build on your hard (and much more thorough) work instead of my nonsense. I also missed to mention I'm in Austria. From what I gathered on the hardware stores here, there's a different standard for pipes, either 53 or 75 mm. I'll keep looking though! You guys are the best- thanks again! Edit: a general rule of thumb question, I couldn't find an answer to yet: how far can the ports go? How many cms to the back wall shouldnthere be?
 21. I looked into it a bit more and the air velocity gets way too high with the thomann speaker. Over 25m/s at about 30Hz. That and the fact that there doesn't seem to be 63mm tubing available here it's making everything more tricky than what I expected!
 22. Well, evidently there's a difference between monkeys like me clicking buttons and people who knows their stuff! The bump you predicted is quite visible (colors are the same as in the previous graphic I posted). Still it seems the speaker could perform quite OK. I was thinking in getting the Beyma from Poland, as it would be a bit cheaper but, I could maybe attempt this build. Even if it fails horribly it would be a cheap lesson. And goes without saying, thanks all of you for sharing so much knowledge!
 23. So, I gave the modelling a try. Here are the Beyma in yellow, the Beta in red and the The Box (A) in gray. I took the measurements from the plans hosted in picasa a few pages back it gave me about 80 liters and it's tuned to 50 Hz. I don't get a full range plot as you guys do, I don't know if it's the software or me. I'd be glad to be pointed what I'm doing wrong! Cheers
 24. Hi everyone! I finally grew the courage to start fooling around with winISD thanks to all the work here. I've been able to more or less repkicate the results obtained so far and looking at other speakers to compare I bumped into this one by Thomann: The box 12 280 A (I'm not able to paste right now, I'm on mobile). It seems better in the model than the W variant. Cheap thing, about 50euros. Has a roll off on highs a bit sooner so I'd suppose a darker sound. I'm considering giving it a try, just for the fun of it. Or did I messed everything up with a beginner's mistake somewhere? Cheers!
