1.
99% of my funky ideas don't feature "the one" and when I realised this after watching JB and Bootsy talk about it, I started to question whether my ideas were actually funky at all. I guess the whole idea of "the one" is pretty specific to those people and there's no need to take it so seriously
Nothing to question really, from your point of view. Although James Brown is associated with a lot of (downbeat) 'One' on every bar (his sort of funk trademark) it's not definitive. Funk music has a lot of syncopation (or can have), 'One' is just the anchor point, after a one bar/two bar phrase/riff/motif etc. (all IMHO of course). Certain Latin/Cuban styles don't sit well with straight/rock players, because of the heavy, natural syncopation and lack of a strong 'One' The middle of this (03:00) is a great example. (Some terrific Bass playing).
 2.
I was going to say something, but I retract my statement. I am rubbish at musical theory.... Are we sure this is in 4/4???? Might explain why the 1 feels out
It sounds like it is in 4/4 to me (during the head, snare is playing on two and on four). Just that the first beat of the bar (One) is anticipated/pushed, with the last 16th/semi quaver of beat four of the previous bar. My take on it, anyway.
 3. Yes, you are right about the examples. A bit foggy, but at the end of the day, most of them seem to be 'happening', with some serious rhythm sections and top line players, not to mention great pocket playing. So, that will do for me... I suppose for me, I tend to like tunes and changes, rather than humping about on a couple of chords. Not to say. I don't like listening to the likes of the Meters etc, I do, very much. There have been some tracks posted I have enjoyed and not heard before. So, not really going to turn my nose up at a bit of music genre bending.

 5.
I love pretty much everything he's done, but as nobody has mentioned it yet, I think his soundtrack for the film Blow Up is fantastic. It also includes his most recognisable tune, well, sort of.....
Yes, very catchy with some serious players on that track. His score on "Death Wish" was pretty hip at the time as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PozTnnkwZ5g
 6. 'The One' can be any note, root, Ist/2nd Inversion etc... But it's dead on beat one of the bar, not two or three, or four for that matter. I thought It was as simple as that. Unless we are talking about some Reggae, or even Ska patterns....Where you can have a 'One Drop'....
 7.
I believe the OP is referring to the 'and' of the 4.
Or the last 16th note/semi quaver of beat four.
 8. Anyone remember this one ? The Simon Park Orchestra. A number one and also the TV theme for 'Van Der Valk'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvesdlGe-EI
 9. Yes, this is awful. I read on Facebook that they both had operations last night (quite serious), but are responding.
 10.
No, not for me, but so many Bacharach & David songs where I can pick out all the string, horn and backing vocal arrangements. Odd one I know!
Not odd for me. I am pretty much the same. Writing and arranging of the highest order. There is one album for me - The Nightfly, Donald Fagen. I didn't realise I did, but my oldest son is transcribing some tunes from it and I ended up helping him out (and getting on his nerves).
 11. Check out this cover of 'After The Love Has Gone'... Never heard of this singer before (Brian Mcknight). David Foster on Piano, Nate East on Bass, John Robinson on kit. Really nice singing and a Heavyweight band. Also 'Morning'....
 12. Yes, that is an excellent one from Victor. The phrasing and sound on the head/tune, reminds me of Herbie Hancock singing through his Vocoder (very lyrical). Same with the solo, very Synth sounding and again, played and phrased like a Keyboard player.
 13.
If I was going to go I reckon I'd need to book into a hotel, so I'd like to see as many acts as possible, but not at £20 per act.
No, I think you got that wrong. Go and see as many as possible; They pay you £20.00 per act. (It's Jazz, they need the audience). I would like to see her, but Cheltenham is a bit far for me.
 14.
I think someone might need to explain the joke
Many have tried to explain him, including close family. Some Jokes just can't be explained. EDIT: Just Googled "20th January Washington". Only two important things happening that day - And the Joke ain't one of them. 15.
i may be unleashing my inner geek a little, but isnt that a screenshot from red dead redemption? not that that would be a bad thing, that game has some great musical moments.
Yes, a real nice, original score on that game. RDR 2 out later this years as well.
 16.
From Janek, through Guy Pratt and Vail Johnson down to JTUK.
I was wondering the other day what had happened to JTUK. I thought maybe he was on a Skiing holiday? What happened there, then? Janek is a cool person, certainly a character and indeed an excellent musician (In my opinion of course). I have only ever heard good things about him from fellow musicians and friends, and if I have been in the vicinity of him playing and talking, he always comes across as a charming fellow. When people blow up, it can sometimes say as much about the people pushing the buttons as it does the Imploder. Sean (BBC) was intelligent, very funny and he certainly sharpened his Axe in the morning, ready for business. But for me, like any Twelve bar with a tedious round and round solo at the end..... You need a Coda and Fine. He didn't have one, just a train crash. Which in the end, didn't groove well with the Basschat Conductor and his section leaders. Shame I suppose, he did make me laugh at times (but to be honest, grimace on other occasions).
 17.
You know this gonna be funky. Does anybody know who the drummer is.?
Vinnie Colaiuta. Both he and Tal did the Jeff Beck gig for a while. Vinnie is great. He has done some pretty serious stuff over the years.
 18.
This. Every time.
Yes, always a winner.
 19. Aaron Copland: Fanfare For The Common Man. Been done to death over the years and at times, sounding like a funeral march. As one YouTube poster said. "If this don't give you Goosebumps, you must be dead"..... Just an opinion of course. This is a particularly good performance. http://youtu.be/0KxMc_tyQBo
 20. Funny enough, more likely on the same hunt, same tune, I ran into this.... EDIT: It didn't give me goosebumps, so maybe I should not have posted, but to me, it was an excellent vocal performance.
 21.
Did anyone do a Funk version of Bridge Over Troubled Water.?
A couple of people I know are involved with this very nice arrangement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWIm8Coq4zI
 22. Quite an innovator was Herbie. He even tore up the Disco charts in the 70's (with his use of the Vocoder). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU7ZCUGnROk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoqAF9ezm1M
 23.
I bought Rockit on12" vinyl when it first came out and promptly never heard of him again until a few years ago. I didn't appreciate exactly who we was. Think it's in the garage somewhere. It's not particularly funky but has a great groove and is probably his most famous number.
I think Chameleon, Watermelon Man and Maiden Voyage are his most known numbers. But, who knows...A lot of folks ain't heard of him at all. Quite often his fantastic tasteful, Acoustic Jazz Piano playing is over looked by his Synth offerings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydAwV5RMwBs The story behind Watermelon Man, along with a version with his Trio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzPZvKSdN7g
 24.
Sorry.... failed joke. (Note to self... be serious )
I must admit, the OP title did make me chuckle. It read like some kind of masterbation technique. What's not to like about Mr Hancock? http://youtu.be/FgBrPQCSdW4
 25.
You mean there's more than one man with that name? Wow! Confusing!
Fail. There is only ONE Herbie Hancock.
