1. First band I was in just played Jam songs. Unfortunately that was the early 80s before tribute bands had been invented. In those days you were just copying and it was frowned upon!
2. Perfect accompaniment to your aged, roadworn or reliced p or j! Authentic features include: - plenty of marks and scuffing - tarnished chrome - no key and one catch missing - one "foot" broken off - couple of rivets replaced by screws to hold handle on and the pièce de résistance - one hinge replaced by bass string ("A" I believe) Surprisingly tidy inside and still capable of doing the job. Collection from sunny Skipton or I could meet you part way, up to 40 mins or so. Might be able to post later in the week but can't commit to that just now.
3. These get a good rep and rightly so. Bit of a prob with this one's neck though hence the low price. It's developed a bit of a ski jump as it nears the body and I can't adjust it out. I like a low action which I've achieved up to the 12th fret, above which I rarely venture. But beyond that is not good. Maybe it's fixable or maybe you don't mind a higher action which may be OK (no guarantees either way though I'm afraid). Marks to the body commensurate with age and use. Weighs in at a reasonable 3.9 Kg (8.6lbs). Collection from sunny Skipton or I could meet you part way, up to 40 mins or so. Might be able to post later in the week but can't commit to that just now. (more photos to follow)
4. Love it. My house isn't big enough though never mind what passes for a mancave!
5. Had a PM about the nut area so adding some additional photos taken in what passed for natural light earlier this morning. While I’m writing, I recently noticed a slight flaw on the back of the neck. There’s a small black mark below the skunk stripe around the 6th fret area. It appears to be below the lacquer so I presume it was introduced during the manufacturing process. You can’t feel it at all and, as I say, I’ve only just noticed it. When I bought this from PMT they had just put 2 of these out. I tried both and this was the better one. Hard to describe why but it just felt right. Not saying it’s the best VM77 in the world but it seems like they can vary a bit. I’ve now got this listed “elsewhere” as they had a £1 offer on however I’d much sooner it go to a fellow bc-er so please let me know if interested. And I am happy to meet you a reasonable distance from Skipton.

Absolute pleasure to deal with every step of the way, thank you very much. Really enjoyed our long chat about basses and music.
7. This is as new, few marks from storage but never been used in anger. Fits standard sized Jazz or Precision TSA lock, key included still in its packet. £100 collection from Skipton please.
8. Bought new from PMT Leeds, brought it home and haven’t touched it since. Still has plastic on pickguard. I was looking for something light weight and this meets that criteria perfectly but at the end of the day I’m just not a Jazz bass person. £260 collection from Skipton please or I can drive a reasonable distance to meet if that helps.
9. Just purchased some strings from Chris. Very pleased with them, thank you.
10. Super glue it is then! I’m not looking for perfection, the rest of the bass has picked up plenty of battle scars. I just want to stop that particular area deteriorating much further if I can. Thanks again everyone, I’ve learnt a lot.
11. Do you know, I’m not now! The bass is a Highway One with it’s famed “satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish”. I think I may have incorrectly interpreted this as applying to the neck as well as the body. Shows the benefit of sounding things out on this forum first. Thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply.
12. Excellent advice thank you very much. I will definitely give this a try and post the results here. Dog’s dinner or not!
13. Very kind of you, thank you. I’m hoping to complete the repair without the addition of any new wood. Much appreciated though.
14. Thanks for that. I had heard that poly over nitro wasn’t such a good idea though. Ideally I’d like to be able to fix this myself, maybe build the lost areas back up and then protect it from further damage.
15. My recently acquired Precision is nicely naturally road worn and I'm looking forward to that continuing. Except in one respect which I really do not want to get any worse. There are a couple of areas of significant lacquer loss down to the bare wood accompanied by some long cracks and I fear I'm in danger of losing most of the original decal. Please can anyone advise how I could best repair this? I'm not looking to get it back to mint condition, just to fix it up well to prevent any further deterioration. Many thanks.
16. Fancy trying some flatwound strings on your p-bass to see if they live up to the hype? Some folk swear by them, others don't. I fall into the latter category. Anyway, I've just bought a Precision with a recently fitted set of the aforementioned . I think they're Rotosound and I think they're 45s. Whatever, they're too good to throw away. Yours for the price of postage (£1.30).
17. Rockpile - the first band I ever saw live. Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner, Nick Lowe and post-Man but pre-Dire Straits Terry Williams. Great Gig. Did mostly Edmunds hit singles as I recall. Can't answer your question though, I was concentrating on what Nick Lowe was doing!
18.
Very first chord in the Pink Panther Theme. Name that chord. Don't try Googling, it will get you nowhere.
Esus4(b5)/A
19. At the Stranglers gig on Friday, JJ played the first three notes of Peaches and then stopped. Obviously everyone recognised it and cheered. When the cheering died down he said they are the three most famous notes in music. Cheers again. Then, perhaps in an attempt not to appear immodest (and showing that maths possibly isn't his strong suit) he said except ta-ta-ta-taaaaa (Beethoven's 5th). Anyway it got me thinking, what other songs are instantly recognisable from three (plus or minus one) notes?
20. Thank you for that. I was hoping to go again this year but suffered a last minute change of plan. That was a strong line up that I would love to have seen. Sorry you didn't get the weather.
21. Kindly taken on a commission sale by The Gallery. I'm sure it will be appreciated by whoever picks it up and it will find a good home. So long my friend.
22. I've now put this, alongside the Kramer, on commission sale at The Gallery. Hopefully its £275 worth of hard core aging will tickle someones fancy.
23. The Stranglers at Grassington Festival tonight. Change of plan as I was hoping to go to Love Supreme again this year but seeing my hero will go some way to make up for that. I saw them a couple of years ago in Portsmouth. I managed to get close enough to the front to see that I had been playing Nice N Sleazy wrong all these years. I'd been starting the familiar blues scale run down on the 4th fret of G as it made sense to my logical mind to not move my hand and play the A open. I should have thought less and listened more!
