1.
I'd look for a clean powerful rig and add the "dirt" with pedals etc.
I appreciate this approach, but I just love the sound that the OB1-300 makes. It really works for me and would be very usable for the kind of music that I am playing with my main band. I was just hoping for some tips regarding cabs since I had no idea where to start and figured some folks on here have no doubt been in the same situation and would have lots of wisdom on the matter.
2. More questions folks, After spending 15-mins blasting away Muse and Monster-Truck riffs at volume in PMT I've totally fallen in love with the Orange OB1-300 head. For reference it is one of these: I'm pretty set on getting myself one come the new year and so this leaves me with the question of which Cab/Cabs to match up with it. In an ideal world I would be able to try out loads of options, but bass shops being what they are there is little chance of that happening. So, here is the question then. What would you/should I look for when it comes to a cab that is going to work well with an amp of this sort. I'm especially interested in something that is really going to make the most of those shockingly dirty tones. My first thought was a pair of 112 cabs from somewhere like Purple Chili or Barefaced given how much love I have heard for them. However, I'm asking for advice because all the recommendations are for the clean and clear tones that cabs offer which is not quite what I am after.
3. (1) Talk to the seller on the off-chance he is an honest fellow who made a mistake - you never know. (2) If need be report the matter to Ebay - it wont help you but if the fellow did this knowingly it's a good idea to warn others. (3) Now follow this:
You might find this handy if it was described as sold as seen- eBay's own advice on this and similar situations: http://www.ebay.co.u...02394120/g.html Having said all that, if the seller argues that it was a latent defect that he was unaware of, then its unlikely that you'll have any success in pursuing a refund
(4) If after all that it does not work, price up the difference between purchasing a different bass and/or fixing this one - take into account how difficult it would be to get one like you have/how much you want that one. Just don't throw good money after bad - if the bass is nothing special and you could get another/something just as nice for around the £150 mark (i.e. the price you paid for this one) then do that and call this one a loss. You can always strip it down and sell any parts for a few ££.
4. Cheers for all the input folks. Alas I was pretty under-whelmed by the PODxt in the end and so passed. It was a good price (£100 for the unit with the floor board and all the tat that came with it) but the sounds were all just a bit thin - they sounded very much like amp models rather than the amps being modeled if you know what I mean. I also checked out the HD500x and was torn on it. It has one bass amp model...compared to twenty-nine guitar amps. Nice to know that we're catered for...but then it does allow interesting bi-amp patches and so forth. In the end though, it just seemed a little too guitar based to be worth the punt. End result: I ordered my self a Zoom B3 and had done with it.
5. I guess for me the important distinction to make would be whether she was: (1) a bit drunk and made a honest mistake falling over or (2) was acting like a total prat, and regardless of drink, should have known better From what you say it sounds as if this was a clear of an honest accident. She probably felt pretty silly and no doubt didn't want to make a scene. Not to mention that if she was drunk enough to fall over she was likely not really in a position to think clearly and act in a manner that she would if sober. Annoying to have to pay out to replace stuff sure but it sounds as if it is all part of the territory that comes with entertaining people that are drinking/partying.
6.
Still not sure about the pickup though.....
I'm currently using a Delano MC-4-FE and I can certainly recommend it if you like a nice punchy yet warm humbucker sound. It's the same ones that you get in the Sandberg Basic series I believe. I have mine paired up with a Delano 2-band pre-amp which is also pretty nice. Silent transition between the active and passive modes is a real plus as it can be used as a big bass-booster/other tonal shift which is far more useful than I had imagined.
7. I've had to do a big claim via paypal around a year ago - not for a bass mind, it was a dodgy PC that my other half purchased. Just be sure to keep an eye on their communications with you as I recall they gave me a very small window of time to provide proof of the defects and so forth. Something like 48 hours between asking for it and the deadline for submission if I recall. However, so long as you jump through their often annoying hoops you should get a full refund from them. In my case they just left the PC with me so I assume the same will happen with you - you just get the cash back and do what you will with the bass.
8. I get my strings from Strings Direct (www.stringsdirect.co.uk) - they seem to stock what you're after, the prices are good and the ship really quickly
9.
I have one of these you could gig with it but would really ideally need the FBV short board to go with it - unless you plan on using just one or two patches to switch between songs or better still not change at all and just use as a DI/preamp straight into a power amp Sound quality and modelling is fine but on the fly control and adjustment is very impractical and unwieldy - personally I keep mine for home noodling and recording and prefer the accessibility of stomp boxes for gigging
The one I have been offered comes with a floor board that has around ten buttons and an expression pedal. I assume that is what you mean by the FBV? The board is a separate item from the POD itself but I think it all connects together so you can use the pedal switches to move things around live. Out of interest, have you used the amp modeling etc. at volume? I'm after something that will work both for noodling at home, and as a live pre-amp/fx-board that'll be going up against a couple of noise guitar-hero types.
10. Hi folks, I've got the chance to pick up a Line-6 Bass PODxt (the 'bean' shaped unit) along with the floor-board (the massive one with ten buttons and an expression pedal) for a very reasonable price. Save for a quick mess around with a friends guitar POD when they first came out I have never used one, but I do like the look of it. So quick questions I guess - for those of you that have used one in anger, do they hold up? Were you able to get good usable sounds from it at gigging volume and is there anything that I should be aware of before picking it up? I did read the reviews where possible but since lots of them were from ten years ago when the unit first hit the shelves I thought it best to ask around on here to see what people think of them after having used them properly for some time. Any advice/recommendations/warnings/anecdotes would be most welcome All the best James Ok, and just to make things more complicated I've now come across a Line-6 POD HD500 also on offer from someone that lives right on my doorstep and at a great price. Any comparison between the Bass pod and the HD500 would be really nice. Cheers folks
11. I just wanted to add that I would fully support the idea of reading. It's actually really easy to get the hang on. It looks odd at first if you are not used to reading a stave with all the lines and dots, but it quickly makes sense. It took me perhaps three to four hours practice to get to a point where I can reasonably follow written music for simple songs. Basic stuff by that time, but all the same the core idea was nailed and from then its just a case of building up practice.
12. Congratualtions on the new bass! That candy apple red is beautiful.
13.
Smashing pumpkins...just sh@te
This one surprised me. Musically I love the Pumpkins - very diverse and interesting even if some of it can be a little hit and miss. But I assume your point was directed toward Billy Corgan. I've always found him to be a very down-to-earth decent fellow. I actually sat in on an interview him briefly around the time of Adore, when I was working for London based publication. He was by a long shot one of the least pretentious and most easy going chaps that we covered. Now Marylin Manson (aka. Brian Warner) was another story...
14.
A courier would probably be around £10-15 Lovely bass BTW
Thank you for the kind words The bass along with the ABS hard-case would be around £20 to ship according to Interparcel.com. I'm more than happy to send it that way. I'm happy to add the case free of charge now, so £150 for collection or £170 for courier with the bass sent in the Black Rat ABS hard-case.
15. Still up for sale - open to reasonable offers both for cash and trade
16. My advice would be to try and pick up a good quality used Squire Precision. You can get them for really reasonable prices and it'll be easy to sell on if it does not suit. I did just this for my first bass, and it was very nice. I had the 2011 Vintage Modified (basically it had a 'Designed by Duncan pickup). The only issue I had with it was that it was a bit on the heavy side for using in full 4-hour non-stop band practice/jam sessions. But then I doubt it was heavier than a Stingray so that should not be an issue. So long as you go for a 2nd hand one, of which there are loads about, you really cannot lose. They sell very quickly (mine shifted in about a week on Ebay) and you'll get all your money back so it's well worth a try.
17.
Might just do that, there's a few emails on the website. I'm assuming Adrian's is the one to use?
Just the info@public-peace one worked fine for me. And I would also fully support going to get a Maruszczyk. Had mine a couple of months and used it in band practice and a few gigs in that time and I love it. There has not been a moment when I have felt I should have purchased something else. Given you clearly know just what you want from the bass too it makes even more sense to do it as a custom order. Also, it is worth asking Adrian some advice about pick-up brands, pre-amps etc as he has some really good advice and pointed me in the direction of some that I would not have normally been aware of, and yet were well worth looking at.
18. Still up for sale, nice little bass with a case!
19. Band websites are one of the few places where I think auto-play media has a place. Might be nice to embed some video there which will run once someone loads it up (at least for the desktop version)?
20. Cheers. I'll have a crack at that too when I restring it
21. Cheers again for all of the advice folks I'm going to zoom over to Strings Direct today and see if I can pick up some nice ones that might make a bit of difference. If not then I guess it'll be time to have a look for another bass. I checked out the Myung singnature bass and it looks fantastic. Going to have to keep my eyes open on here for when one of those comes up - especially given all the great stuff I have heard about Yammaha basses in general.
22. Looks pretty interesting - I'll be interested to know if it turns out to be reasonable value for bass alone (as opposed to those that'll use it for both bass and guitar). Looks like a reasonable pricing for the UK too at just over £1000.
23. For me I'd get Matamp to make me a nice custom 200-watt valve head and 810 cab...then I would hire a team of rodies to carry it around for me
24.
What's the string spacing on this out of interest? Looks like a lovely bass at a great price
Hi bud, sorry for the slow responce there - I was away for a few days and only checked my PMs - the spacing at the bridge is 19mm so starndard for a 4-string. I picked it up at a time when I was messing around with learning a lot of slap and there was no issue there. The famed 'narrow' strings on these comes from the nut end - the total nut width is 38mm. The quality is certainly impressive - when I purchased this one I tried quite a lot of different basses side by side in the sub-£500 range and this was the one that lept out at me. Just nicely balanced, well finished and plays smoothly. It's a budget bass at the end of the day, but a very good one and will no doubt be great use to someone out there. Alas, I just need to clear some space here since my poor little one-bedroom flat is starting to look more like a practice studio than a living space...
25.
I'd be more worried about the actual tone of the B and how defined it is....
Aye, to be honest its not great but then I guess I was not expecting very much from the bass given that it cost peanuts. It works fine for what I do for the most part, just there are a couple of bits where fast riffing on the B string is needed and I find it hard to keep the rhythm solid when it's twanging all over the show. Interesting to know that this is an issue that can be there with pricey basses too however. I'm tempted to save up for something with fanned frets (probably looking toward a Dingwall) so as to get a much longer scale length. Oh and cheers Howie for the tip about string core types. I'll going to re-string the bass sometime over the next few weeks anyhow as the ones that come with it are a bit too bright for my tastes. I'll have a look at see what I can find with hex cores and see if that improves things.
