Wireless IEMs: Xvive U4 & alternatives
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in Accessories and Misc
Forgot to say. I think I’ve found the best fitting tips for my ears. I got some Comply Comfort tips in large. These are the more oval shaped ones. Wide but shallower than the standard models. They seem to fill out better and hopefully stay in longer. In all my years of playing I’ve never found a reason (other than health of course) to stick anything in my ears at rehearsals, but now I have to so I can hear myself, but also because the studio we occasionally use means I have the band facing me. It’s a small room and my Apple watch registers over 100db on its sound meter 😬 The guitarists only use small 1x12 combos, but my god it’s like a wall of sound when I take the ear buds out (or rather they come lose). -

I knew I wasn’t going mad. https://www.thomann.de/gb/xvive_t9_in_ear_monitors.htm It’s looks like Thomann are the only place selling them. -

I may have got it wrong. I was looking for IEM’s and was scrolling through loads when I saw them. It said Xvive but could have been listed wrong. -

No, I mean the actual in earbud’s, not the wireless system. Not sure where I saw them, but I was surprised that I did as I haven’t seen them on the Xvive website. -

We have two members of the band using them now. No interference issues with either. I noticed the other day there are Xvive IEM’s as well. Not heard much talk about them. -

My money is on faulty. Send it back. If you cant use it under normal conditions it’s either not worth it, or broken. Id have said maybe the Boss is interfering with it, being so close, but if your singer has already tried everything it has nothing to do with your set up IMO. -
Just updating this as ive just got my second MODX, a MODX7+. The only negative i had with the MODX6 was i could do with more keys. Now im gigging i feel the 61 keybed is a bit restricting when playing piano type parts. More memory is also a most welcome, i can now load more sounds without having to keep moving things around. It’s been a fun 2 1/2 years, and im now firmly in the \don’t pick the bass up anymore’ camp……..for now. MODX6 pictured with the 7. I’ll be selling the MODX6 soon though, as my Fantom 06 takes top spot.

Good idea, I’ll give that a go. Im not in a rush, still got to get the ear side sorted first anyway.

Ok. I just had a look at the UE900. Price wise i could afford them, but they look a bit big for my flat ears. I know as custom shell would help with that, but a re shell would not happen straight away. And impossible to get as far as i can see.

Thanks, thats an interesting read. Seems like there is a lot involved behind the scenes. I would be very surprised if china isn’t involved in any mass manufacture these days, but I understand its how its all put together that counts. My IME’s have 2xBA and one dynamic driver. It gives me the sound i like. Ive never tried any high end ones but, these do sound good for my key’s so i have no need to get anything else unless there is a fit improvement. The one above mine had 3xBA and a dynamic driver. On paper it’s aimed more for my use, but i just felt it lacked a bit of body. I guess you just cant tell until you try them. They were only £130 so still budget as such, but thats all i need for now.

Sorry, what does BA mean? Not that it’s important but it looks like MEE are based in California, at least thats what they say. So not a Chinese company by the looks of it. EDIT: Forget the BA thing, i re read your post and know what it means.
-
Ah right. Ok, but sorry to labour the point, I like what i hear no matter where it comes from (and we have no way of knowing where MEE get their drivers i suppose, could be the same?). As you say, they supply all round the world, inc china. Anyway, it’s all good to know. I didnt like the MEE 4 driver option either so maybe 3 is just the sweet spot.
-
Don't they all come from China anyway? i didn't mean to infer the KZ’s were flat as such, just that playing piano through them i felt there was something missing compared to some of the others i tried. Maybe the slight dip in the mids were why I felt them sounding harsh.

Talking of cable’s, i think it was this thread where we were talking about stereo using a jack to XLR cable in to a P2. Back then i couldn't get this to work. Last week i was over at a mates place and he uses a P2. There was no issue with stereo for him. I got a new P2 today and i also have stereo. Guess i had a bad unit.

Thanks, good info. I will look in to it. I guess £500 isnt out of the question if i end up with a good, reliable fit. i will disagree about the MEE’s vs KZ10 (and KZ10 Pro) though. My singer (and GF) has the KZ Pro, and i didn't like them when i tried them. I wanted to, but they just weren’t for me. They sounded a bit harsh and brash to my ear. Flat, and maybe more true, but cold and lifeless. I went through 4 versions of the MEE’s, inc the 4 driver version, and settled on the 3 driver version. Nice and warm, not neutral but much more pleasing to my ears. So i could get the MEE’s re shelled? I really like the sound of them, and while im sure (no pun intended) more money could get me better, it seems a waste of money to me as im already happy with the ones i have. Other than the fit.
-
Hmm, id never thought of it like that. Now it makes sense that people get their IEM’s re shelled. I must admit im not too keen on having those large lumps sticking out of my ears. I think i need to re up on all this again and find some that take the custom shells. Thanks for heads up.
-
Yeah, looks like i have no real option. I know Mee do them for $150 (im using Mee IEM’s) but not sure if i have go to them? I realise i need to get my ears scanned (Specravers do it) but it would speed things up if i could get them made over here.

I really need to look in to custom fits. Ive really struggling keeping my right ear in, even with foam tips. Ive tried quite a few different types so far, and although most work, i find the seal isnt great after a song or two.
-
Well yes and no. I get he might be turning them on at home to get a tone he likes, but he also admits he has never bothered with EQ and used to let the guitarist set his tone (explains a lot) until I came along. So I have tried to educate him and he is having none of it. Takes him a min or so to re tune one bloody string, but has often played more than a few songs before realising he is still down tuned 😂. And also saying his amp Isn’t loud enough when he is standing behind it 🙄. Sorry for derailing this thread.
-
Don’t get me started. It’s a passive P and he has no bloody clue about all this. Been playing for almost 40 years apparently. I keep having a go at him but it just won’t sink in. He has just brought a Fender Rumble head and cab. He has high and high mid maxed out, contour on, treble boost on. Playing thought a fender 2x10 with tweeter on. Squeak’s all over the place, clanks etc. we are playing Motown, Beatles etc. it annoys me so much. It ruins the mix. After every sound check I turn all that crap off and it’s fine, so gig wise it’s not a huge issue (other than the turning down), but come the next rehearsal it’s all back on. He plays well but is clueless, and stubborn. There, you got me started 😂
-
These guys are just old school, but in a very basic way. Said they have done loads of gigs but have no idea how to act professionally on stage. Bass player keeps turning his bass down (on the bass) and quite often forgets to turn it up. Without someone in the audience letting us know how it’s sounding the whole mix can go tits up, so trying to get them to change to a system when they haven’t grasped the most basic one is pointless. I do point out the better way of hearing yourself when they do complain, but I don’t push it.
-
Yes, that’s my attitude. This band even text’s me things like ‘do I need to bring a monitor?’, ‘do I need to bring a mic stand?’ I now tell them I don’t care if they do or don’t, I don’t need them so it’s up to them. When I joined I said I was happy to supply the PA, as long as they sort the monitors out. So they have their monitors with them. As I’m playing keys I really do depend on having a monitor of some sort. I have no issue with using my DBR12 on stage but it’s one more thing to carry. Now my whole monitoring system, along with all my leads and other things go in one bag.
-
Ive now gone over to using IEM 100%, but im the only one that does in my band. Even the singer who has IEM’s doesn’t always use them (mainly because she forgets to charge them). I never realised just how loud the band is at rehearsals until recently. I took one ear out and was blasted by a wall of sound. We aren't a loud band as such, both guitarists use small 1x12 combos, but the difference was amazing. We are talking about upgrading the monitors, at the moment they use small cheap boxy sounding things, but IEM’s are a no go with the Jurassic side of the band. I dont care. Im at the back in my own world and have told them to to just get on with it, it doesn't involve me now. I run the sound as such, but i dont sing so monitoring is down to them to sort out.
