1. DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP! Going by the questions the two chaps are obviously working on a cure for GAS! Done btw, don't tell me if you do cure GAS 😎
2. Thanks for the tips and the video, I shall have a fiddle with my knobs when I get home this weekend
3. That is absolutely awesome!
4. I think maybe I need to learn a bit about eq after reading this thread! If this works it shows my current set up, however if someone has the time and inclination to explain to me how to get the most out of my eq, I would be eternally grateful.
5. I can finally post in this thread w00p! Played my first ever gig last night at a small private festival to about 75 people. A few minor hiccups on our part, and overpowering keys and BV due to the organiser insisting on handling the sound, but all in all the set went down well and we've been hearing good things from people that were there. Can't wait for the next one now.
6. Thank you all very much for your advice, at rehearsal Tuesday I found out that we now have another gig the following Saturday filling in at short notice for a band thats had to pull out, so I went home and changed them. I figure I might as well get them on and start playing them in. For those that mentioned practice, rest assured I have been practicing every night whilst parked in my truck (terrible acoustics!) Blue, unfortunately I haven't been playing as long as you, and haven't had the time to learn all the bass parts note for note. What I mean by winging it is that I'm playing the songs with simplified basslines where possible, but still retaining the feel of the song. Not that I have no clue what I'm going to be playing. Don't worry, I haven't butchered any Beatles songs ScrumpyMike, I'm sure we must be very close geographically going by your username!
7. Should be fine amp wise, I'm running a hartke 3500 through a hartke 4x10 and a matching hartke 1x15 whereas one of the guitarists is on a 35w combi and the other is on a 60w must be one of the few times the bassist wins the volume wars!
8. Yep, got plenty of lead just in case of that!
9. Thanks for all the advice guys, luckily I have a spare set of nickel slinkys for emergencies, as well as 2 sets of the pro steels. I shall keep these faithfuls on until after the gig then change. I really appreciate the help!
10. They're roundwounds, currently EB slinky I assume (It's a Sterling SubRay4) and they do still sound pretty good, although I really can't tell if they're still bright or deadening. Not enough experience. If I change them I'll be going to my favoured strings, d'addario pro steels, which would sound brighter anyway if I remember correctly. That said, I do fancy giving flats a try at some point, although I ha e no idea why! πŸ˜‚
11. Im looking for some advice from more experienced players, I have a gig next Saturday, first one ever, I'm slightly scared but excited too. I'm as prepared as I can be (6 weeks to learn 20 songs, I'm winging almost all of them!) I have 2 spare batteries for my bass and 4 spares for my wireless transmitter and a set of spare strings for the bass, I can't think of anything else I might need. The question is, the current strings on my bass have been on it for at least 18 months, since I bought it, so longer in the shop obviously. They don't seem to be showing signs of wear, and I play fingerstyle quite lightly, I don't hit the strings hard. Should I change them now, 1 week before the gig, or leave them for now and change them afterwards?
12.
Ok I'm gonna say it - he's been dead long enough now... Ace of Spades. Forty-ish minutes of melody-free garbage.
Even Lemmy grew to hate that song, although more because he got bored of playing it. Personally I enjoy it, but I think motorhead have a lot of better songs. Thing is, ace of spades fit the demographic perfectly, Lemmy's brand of high speed (and high, speeding) rock n roll played as loud as the amps could go. I agree with most of the posts on here though. I can't stand the smiths, never got that whole music to slit your wrists to vibe.
13. My first bass in an awesome blue. Bolt on neck, not the through neck, and lovely to play.
14. Thanks guys. I'll take another stab at it when I get home at the weekend. I'll try to find the ear trainer app for android, it sounds really helpful.
15. Start sea4ching for the opportunity, and grab it with both hands when it comes Blue. Will it be tough? Probably. Is it a stable life? No, but you don't seem to want that anyway. Will you regret it if you don't go for it? Almost certainly. I don't believe you should live your life with any regrets about things you could have done. You own your home, bills are manageable, nobody depending on you financially, so stop talking about it on the Internet and go and do it.
16. Thanks. I have a trial version of transcribe but I really need to read the how to that's part of the program because it's managing to confuse me more 😁
17. I've just become the bassist for a country/southern rock type band but unfortunately I'm a bit stuck. I can't read notation and play. I could convert notation to tab, but the problem I have is that it's hard, if not impossible, to find even the notation for a lot of the songs we plan to cover, so I'm left having to learn how to work out the basslines by ear. I can find the rhythm fairly easily, but for the life of me I can't work out the notes. Does anyone have any tips for a complete newbie to transcribing?
18. I've never gigged, but more because I'm still new to playing (been playing about 18 months or so), my workload means I'm only available at weekends, and finding a band hasn't been easy because of that. It's not through any lack of desire to gig that's for sure. I got bored dealing with the time wasters on some musician classified sites, so I tried to form my own band, which didn't get anywhere in the end as finding vocals was difficult, then the guitarist had girlfriend problems so couldn't commit, and the drummer and his wife started fostering meaning he had very little time. I recently met up with a guy who's trying to put together a country/southern rock type band and things seem to be going well, so hopefully pretty soon I'll pop that gigging cherry.
19. It's just the security certificates out of date I think. I get the same warning when I use my phone to browse their site, but never on the computer. I've had it happen on a couple of different sites
20.
hmmm, never had that sort of experience in Mansons, always very very good, sales and repairs, both excellent, mind you, its not a chain...
I've had nothing but good experiences with Mansons, both online, over the phone, and actually in the store.
21. The Welsh fans will sing Tom Jones Delilah at the drop of a hat.
22. Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I've j7st bought a couple of cabs and a head from a mate who lost his senses and has decided after many years of bass, that he's enjoying playing guitar more! Foolish boy! Anyway, I just wanted to check that I had it set up right. Head is a Hartke HA3500 and cabs are a Hartke TP410 and Hartke TP115 The head has 2 x 8 ohm outputs, each of which is plugged into the 8ohm input on the cabs. I'm guessing that's correct? I really should get on the Hartke website and download the manuals.
23.
I struggle defining Jaffa Cakes though..
It's actually really easy. Cakes are soft, and when they go stale they go hard Biscuits are hard, and when they go stale they go soft. ergo, jaffa cakes are cakes. I think that's actually the legal definition too.
24. Nice one, you guys looked like you really enjoy yourselves too.
There would have been much sniggering in our band if we had been invited to play in her garden
Yep! Especially when she was told she has to mow the lawn firstπŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ž
25. I'm in Taunton, but only at weekends cos I work away. If you can fit that in I'd be up for it.
