1. For the Bass Collections lovers (you know who you are): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Collection-SB-460-by-SGC-NANYO-Excellent-Condition-smooth-bass-playing/222618842870 Quite tempted by this one but have no spare cash... Condition looks pretty good apart from some pitting on the tuners.
2. Don't know if the starting price is good or not, but I believe there's some love for these around here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-80s-Ibanez-Musician-MC924-Electric-Bass-Guitar-Made-in-JAPAN/232456177098
3. Now feeling torn - took the SR700 for its first outing today and was, to be honest, a little disappointed with it at gig volume... though this could be just because I didn't get the tone dialled in right on the first attempt and I'm not used to active basses as haven't played one for a while. The neck was also felt a bit sticky... or that was just me... Will try it again next week and see if I can get more time to fiddle with the sound. I use a wireless setup and from a distance it sounded reasonably good (mids were a bit forward) but standing next to my rig it just seemed a bit wooly. However, weight and general feel was lovely and digging in everything felt solid and well put together. Still GASing for the SR750 - the licensed Nordys are calling out to me... Though a couple of places they're marked as "Discontinued"?!? Is that for real? Unless I can pick up a 300e secondhand I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon - but not seen many come up secondhand... as mentioned, don't need want to get a haircut when I'm not 100% sure it's something I'd hold onto long(ish)-term.
4. Bought a Gotoh style tuner from Graham - in great condition, exactly what was needed and delivered well packaged. Thank you!
5. Tidy looking Peavey Foundation fretless - though not clear whether it's factory fretless or a de-fret. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-Foundation-Fretless-Bass-1980s-Made-in-USA-Super-Ferrite-Pickups/302420992960
6.
Hi anzoid. I have a SR750 and they are indeed licensed Nordstrand pickups but it is a cracking piece of kit. The eq is really good on these especially with the active passive option. The only thing I would say about it is that due to the natural wood finish, the body is very easily dinged. Or mojoed if you like!
Thanks jezzaboy - think I need to save up for one these... I'm pretty careful with my stuff so hopefully I won't create an early relic if I do buy one
7. I'm intrigued as to why MK1 Barts have such a bad reputation - this isn't the first place I've seen people say that they're not much good. In my SR700 they seem OK - I admit I've not spent much time with the bass yet, but initial impressions through a GK MB500 into two Mark Bass 12s were good. Does anybody know anybody who has swapped out the Barts for Nordy big singles? I'm tempted to do so if [a] I manage to sell my Yamaha and [b] the general concensus is that it's worth the effort - I'm never likely to have SR Premium type money and I'm not a huge fan of the current bunch of finishes. And yeah, like Pinball, really enjoying a decent Ibby thread. My first one was an SR300 in pewter that I foolishly moved on (it didn't sound good through an Orange 50W combo...). Would love to try an SR300e at some point.
8. Also on eBay with a start price of £350 - so if you're interested maybe an offer would work... Searching for "Yamaha BB1100s fretless" shows that a "Buy it now" one went for under £325 at the beginning of June - the £325 is crossed out which I think indicates that a lower offer was accepted. It was collection only though which tends to knock a few quid off. My experience with fretless basses is you get less for 'em because it's a smaller market - so an offer right at the beginning of the listing (Gumtree and eBay) might be quite welcome from the seller - I know when I've sold frelesses I've always wondered whether they would sell
9.
Look forward to hearing a bit more about how you are finding it in comparison to the P-Bass. I've never owned a P-Bass but been recently told that if I want a particular tone I'm hankering for, that the P is the only way to go!
Currently on holiday so the bass is quite a long way away... and I've not had too much time to play it because of getting ready for said holiday, but... it's about as far from a P-bass as you can get in terms of feel - neck is very slim front to back, it's 38mm at the nut though the spacing at the bridge is 19mm - just like your average Fender. The neck on the SR700 is bubinga and jatoba (not sure in what proportions) and feels smooth but is open pore(ish) compared to the satin finish that my P-bass had. Body is very small and contoured, less slab like, but I never had a problem with the P-bass feel. With the neck pickup soloed and the treble rolled off and the bass boosted slightly you can get a definite P-bass type thump - the Bartolini MK1s are (as far as I can tell from the reading I've done) split coil pickups. But it still isn't 100% P-bass sounding, perhaps a bit too hi-def, a bit too shiny and modern. Having said that, the reason I got rid of my P-bass after multiple pickup swaps was because it didn't have the sound I want... So, I guess, if you want the P-bass sound, you're going to need a real P-bass at some point. The styles of music I play don't tend to call for a specific sound so I can get away with playingwhat I want. If I had to compare the SR700 to anything Fender, I'd say it leaned more towards scooped Jazz bass. The SR700 was a bit of a "see it at a good price, go for it" choice, but I think it may stick around for a while at least. I would, in theory, like to have an SR750 with the P/J Nordstrands (though I believe they're licensed rather than real Nordys??), but I'm also not so keen on the wooden bodies of the higher end SR range - I like a poly finish, and actually prefer solid colours though the amber SR700 is very nice "in the flesh". I should do an NBD rather than hi-jack this one... but here's a couple of photos anyway
10. Just got an SR700 in amber, 2014 model with the mid-switch. Saw it secondhand on Anderton's website yesterday, and it happily coincided with the sale of my Fender P-bass. Still in the "getting to know you" phase and not taken any photos as yet - but liking it very much so far.
11. We used the Peugeot garage for all our car work - we had an old Peugeot 309 and they did all of its servicing, helped us get through the Controle Technique and were generally really wonderful to us - your uncle may (or may not) remember us as the English couple with a small child who spoke very little French when we first arrived in the town. They taught me a lot of useful car related language and never laughed when I tried to explain things. It is possible we have met - I did go in one time for a guitar repair - took in the Les Paul mentioned above. It had been leant up against a wall (yeah, dumb) and my wife knocked it over and the headstock snapped clean off. I took it to the shop in Etalle to see if a repair was viable because I loved that guitar, cheap as it was (I knew nothing about guitars then). The person I spoke to in the shop was very kind but said there was no hope - this was the day I learned about MDF guitars They did sell me a very nice Yamaha though at a very good price. And yes, St Mard was very quiet - our idea of a fun packed day out was to go over to Cora at Messancy for a McDonalds Our eldest son's first McDonalds experience was there when he was under a year old - we'd eat and he'd play with the paper bag. We had a number of happy meal toys from there that kept him occupied for ages. He's now 17 and still loves McDonalds The Orval I certainly miss, but not sure we ever came across pâté gaumais - somehow managed to miss that one.
12. I only lived in Virton/St Mard (Rue Edmont Jacques) for about 18 months - Feb 2001 to September 2002, we lived right near to the little Protestant church by the river. I used to go up to Etalle as often as I could as there was a wonderful music shop there - bought a lovely Yamaha Pacifica guitar there after my cheapy Les Paul copy broke - headstock snapped off when it fell over and discovered it was, basically, made of MDF!! From there we moved to Bastogne where we lived until July 2013 when we came back to the UK.
13. Amazing looking bass - and I used to live in the town where that's listed
14.
I also have a fretless...
I'm guessing you're not selling though? Maybe you could put a picture up, just as a tease (unless I missed it elsewhere in the thread, which is a possibility) The only thing that would put me off getting another Bass Collection would be that I don't want the current one to feel unloved... it's just about perfection. I've done the "I'll never sell this bass..." thing before, but this one might actually stick around. (You can quote that back to me in 12 months' time...)
15. Thought I might as well add my Bass Collection SB100 to the thread. Purchased from TheGreek and I've mucked around with it a bit. I got a loom from KiOgon because I wanted to go passive with it, so it's now sporting a PJ set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. The loom is VVTT (or VTVT depending on how you look at it). There's a new Schaller 2000 bridge waiting to go on which will be good for the string spacing over the bridge pickup which is a bit off at the moment. I've kept all the original parts, just in case. This thing is an absolute monster and I love it to bits - only been out twice but enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone who has seen it has liked the colour (dusky purple... needs to be seen in the flesh, photos don't do it justice) - though playing it at a wedding a week or two ago it was a struggle to find a tie that matched... and I'm probably going to change the strings just because the red bits clash... ahem, what a tart... If someone would like to sell me either a pearl white version or a fretless... well, I wouldn't say no.
16.
You'd better be able to tell them apart though.
Um, yeah, I didn't write that quite right
17. 20-30 at age 44 - the problem I'm finding with my hearing (despite being mostly careful over the years) is hearing conversations when there's background noise - particularly female voices... though I've read somewhere that this is somewhat normal - as blokes get older they can't hear their wives/girlfriends so well, and vice versa... make of that what you will.
18. Not had much luck with Sounds of Frome - when we first moved here I enquired about ordering some stuff through them, initially they seemed interested (and it was within what they could do... apparently) and then they just never bothered to follow through - so I've never really bothered with them since. Maybe need to re-visit...
19. Maybe a bit out of left field - but Cort do a double MM humbucker bass called the C4H (also C5H). They're rather nice, active with 2-band EQ with mid-boost, older versions had Hipshot Ultralites, not 100% certain about more recent ones. Neck is Wenge, Body is Mahogany. Example: http://www.ebay.co.u...l-/381792416268 (new 4-string) There's a 5-string on eBay with a start of £170 - http://www.ebay.co.u...H-/282596810408 Only downer on the series is the colour palette is limited: gloss pearl white, or matte (goes shiny a bit easily) black. Edit to add- build quality is very good, fit and finish right up there with basses costing two or three times the price. I loved mine, and don't quite know why I got rid of it. Just can't justify buying another one at the moment.
20. Oh man... don't do that to me... Let me know if you do decide to sell
21. There was a note that appeared last night (though didn't look to see if it was there this morning) saying "Reduced for quick sale" - so, I guess wanted it gone as soon as possible. Anyway, glad it's gone - I can rest easy knowing that I managed to resist the GAS
22. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-RBX-774-Active-Bass-Guitar-Silver-with-strap-and-Padded-Gig-Bag-FREE-P-P/162610668794 Someone else buy this so I don't have to It started at £249 yesterday, came down to £199 within about an hour and is at £179 this morning... If it's not gone by lunchtime I might raid the piggy bank, so someone do me a favour and buy it first...
23. Kind of annoyed they've moved to Bath as they were only a couple of minutes from where I live in Frome so was handy to pop in for strings and stuff. Bought two basses from them too - great service, always happy to chat and let you try guitars out, they're also happy to order stuff in (well, Fender/Squier at least...) Wishing them luck in Bath, but wish they'd stayed in Frome.
24. Just bought and installed a loom for my new(ish) Bass Collection SB100 as I wanted to turn it passive. John produced a great loom VTVT (or VVTT?) that works perfectly and dropped right in without any trouble as a replacement for what was there before. As always, the service John offers is superb with great communication and he's always willing to help with getting things sorted. Thanks John!
