1.
Hello all... I'm a short time lurker, first time poster and I wonder if anyone here could give me some advice. I've managed to get enough cash together to buy a half way decent bass, I've got around £500 to spend. Now I was all set to get a MIM jazz from GAK when I spotted that they are selling the levinson blade tetra standard for as near as dammit the same price. I've tried the jazz and it fits nice and I like the neck and the tone, but I can't get hold of a blade to try before I buy. Anyone have any opinions over which would be the better buy? I'm not fussed over things like resale value or anything like that. thanks in advance, Frog
I think with £500 to spend, I'd get a Squier VMJ over a MIM and possibly upgrade the tuners and bridge, maybe even the pups and tronics, but they are very good apparently - Duncan designed. Blades are everything Rhys says, as far as I know. I have been very impressed with the two I have played in the past. You can get a LOT with £500, check out the Basschat for sale area, you may even get a USA Jazz for that. or for about £350-£400 a cracking MIJ. And welcome to BC mate.

 3.
Also, one of the signs of a really good rhythm sections is what they DON'T play.... a little expectant gap here and there can be a great thing.
Bang on.
 4. It's just magic and familiarity really. Depends on what sort of music you play and how much you are into drums and the dynamics of the music. I can second guess the fills and accents of one of the drummers I play with and follow them with the bass. But I've been playing on and off with him for over ten years. Also, I spent years programming drums, I love drum tutorial vids, and I play drums a little bit, it all helps. In the end, there's no secret. In fact there's no rule about playing WITH the drums at all. I often write lines that follow the vocal. Down to taste in the end I suppose, what's best for the song.
 5.
Its all that hair
Well he started losing it and made up the difference with strings .. When I saw the thumbnail of this, I thought it was that geezer from the Wurzels romancing a large chicken
 6.
Still a little baffled here... is that an ensemble that plays the music of Pat Metheny in the big band style, but doesn't feature Pat Metheny at all? If so... that sounds class! Any videos/clips on the web anywhere?
Yes, Pat just gets in the bloody way.
 7. Leave, mate. OR Use them for your own learning experience. Two of my bands write the basslines and I have to play them as is, although I augment and improvise around them a bit when we play live. The difference is they are very good basslines and the bands are seasoned pros who have written and released many albums. So I have absolutely no problem with that, I know my place as a hired gun. Your situation doesn't sound as pleasant.

 9.
Well there's always a first! I've not heard of a Corvette with neck dive as the long top horn tends to even the balance but I suppose if the Ash body was light enough it may well compromise stability!
Nor I! My fretless vette is very light, no neck dive.
 10.
I occasionally get PM's from people who I've communicated with on a regular basis or who I've met at local bashes and you'd be amazed how many have said they took ages to twig... or maybe you wouldn't be amazed!
Erm, possibly, possibly not
 11. I have never heard Geddy's tone as "growl" but what a tone! By god I love RUSH too !
 12.
talking Ritters, i love Josh Dunham's (Princes's bassist) Ritter....
Is that from a bag of star mix?
 13.
Some people don't even spot it!
Really?! How do you know?
 14.
It's simply down to playing on a soloed bridge pick up with the correct approach and adequate E.Q. The most agreeable example of the Jazz growl is almost everything Jaco played on:
Check out that hyper-funky crowd (0.34)! They say everything about Weather Report for me. I disagree that Jaco's tone on this is growly. I would have thought using both pups would produce more growl, that's just distorted. I'll try to find an example of what I think is growl on yt.
 15.
They look like the sort of thing a Premiership Footballer would have hung on the wall of his Cheshire mansion.
Nah, that's all cheap sh*t from Spain Have you seen the Ritter Roya? Reminds me of my granddad's armchair, that one.
 16.
Where on the string are they breaking? If it's at the bridge check the saddle for rough/sharp edges.
Correctomundo.
 17.
Puce, taupe, manilla and battelship grey for E A D G respectively.
No teal?
 18. I think Ritters look filthy. Why anyone would want to get on a stage with one side of a chaise longue is beyond me. Anyway, if I had five large to spend on a bass, it would not be a new one, I think you can see where I'm going ..
 19.
Thanks fella - glad you enjoyed it so much Mike
It was excellent, Mike, I really enjoyed reading it too. I don't want to swell your balls too much but you are the best writer BGM have.
 20.
played the Old Blue Last, london on thursday last week. it was packed because we were supporting a band which featured members of big bands. in the photo it looks pretty empty but that was because i was on the floor because the other bands refused to move their stuff to the side for me. the crowd was to the left and stage to the right. we were horrendously late (turned up when we were meant to be on stage) and in the process of loading in my amp got wet and is now broken. I had to borrow a trace elliot, good god it sounded disgusting. but still a good gig which we've had a lot of good feedback from.
Not a bad place to play, I played with Kit there recently. Great crowd too, pretty much full. Good sound, tiny stage.
 21. You've done a really kind thing here, Jack.
 22.
These are in the Ritter price range, and at least I can see the work put into Ritters.
Eh?
 23.
.. and loved the pictures of their Cat, he/she looks lovely (sorry big cat lover). Brilliant mag and just getting better and better IMHO.
Yeah, AJ is a lovely cat. He was very happy for me to pick him up and play while I had a chat with Martin in the workshop. Don't be sorry about being a cat lover mate! I've got four sharing my house.
 24.
Haha! The Nash's I saw at V&R didn't have any decals on the headstock, but that was a year ago maybe. The Gallery have a Fender logo'd Nash, and Clarky's Nash has a logo. Magical indeed! Are you going to include such small details as the router hump in your relic builds? Si
The one in V&R had a logo and a sign saying "This is NOT a Fender". It was one of the most horrid basses I've ever set fingers on, neck like a club.
 25.
I've always been a very hands-on bodger and my gear fixation has developed my guitar tech skills immensely. Most of the vintage JapCrap which comes my way is in a very sorry state & I get a huge amount of satisfaction from making a playable & (to some) attractive instrument out of what comes to me as a dilapidated piece of junk. Over the last few years I've bought & sold a ridiculous amount of instruments - mostly skinny-string guitars - and learned a vast amount about what is a pretty mysterious area of guitar-manufacturing history. Jon.
I used to do a lot of that. it's so much fun! I used to swear by Squiers at one point, but I'm doing a lot more pro band work now so quality tone and build, and reliabilty are really important to me. I'm so not a "one bass forever" type, to me it's more than just the music, gear trading is all part of it for me.
