Anyone mentioned Stingray5 (Steve)'s prog outfit, Landmarq? We saw them recently at the Peel in Kingston and I'm still in awe of their musicianship. Oh, and the songs aren't bad either! http://landmarq.net/home.htm
Great aren't they! Not seen them live yet but I must. danthewelshy's band Godsticks are an ace prog band too.

I'm sorry but there are many guitarists that can do that with their fingers. All it does it restrict the instrument instead of expanding it. It's got some uses I suppose. You could never do this on it, but then again not many people can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRRaakNfRrQ
Not wanting to put a damper on your scheme, but IME the picks used by most of the suppliers offering a personalisation service are the plectrum equivalent of Rotosound strings. As you can see from the previous posts most of us here have much more discerning tastes (just like strings)!

I'm ordering a load of custom picks (BC logos) to give away as gifts at the next Herts Bash - I was hoping for a consensus - I'll see if they'll mix and match...
I see no problem in doing that, as long as you are aware they will most likely be novelty items and not get used. Sorry if that sounds like a bit of a dampener, it's a really nice idea.
Interesting experience tonight. Had a morris dance practice and usually I play quite melodic lines. As I have left hand issues at the moment I had to dial that right back and played simple root/fifths and simpler progressions, concentrating on the dancers rather than trying to be clever. The result was that it was commented on how much stronger the bass was tonight and how much more lift it provided. There in lies a lesson for me. Steve
That's a great lesson
I agree with you. It's about fitting in, but there's plenty of songs you & I could name that have an interesting bassline & several instruments. Listen to almost any album by The Beatles, Michael Jackson, RHCP, Frank Sinatra, Jamiroquai or Bill Withers to hear a great variety of basslines, from simple grooves to "I need more practice" basslines all on the one disc.
I've seen plenty of bassists who can play fast and do clever stuff but who can't get a simple groove actually grooving. I really do believe it's harder to play slowly and simply and make it groove, than it is to play fast or complex lines and use tricky techniques. Not that you can't do both of course.
Being a life long pick player I swear by Jim Dunlop Tortex .73 Just the right balance of firm for digging in, flexi for speed and rubbery grip-ness. Love them and always a couple in my back pocket
Those are my top choice for bass. I've haven't played pick for quite a while, but I played a couple of songs in rehearsal tonight using my index finger nail as a pick, it sounded ace, I love pick style, damping and down strokes sound cool.
Lol I might of missed your implications but think you missed my sarcasm lol. I definitely missed the implications of a poodle moth I looked it up and still missed your implications of the moth.
Seriously, just keep at it, and get a decent teach to set you on the right path. Best of luck, and may joy be unconfined.
Cant make chords or change quick enough lol played guitar from age 11 till my late teens. And i wasn't happy then either haha
You missed the implications of my post but never mind If you played guitar for 7 years and you couldn't learn some chords and change quickly between them, there must be something you are not telling us - for example, that you are actually a Venezuelan Poodle Moth.

Jimmy Haslip's solo on 'the fifth' - what's going on ?
I was trying to work out what was going on at the 3rd bar of the solo that's not actually in the bit I put on sound cloud. But that first part is quite noticeable at 100% speed, I was intrigued at what he was actually doing. It's not just one note.
Trust me, it's NOTHING like what your 50% recording is. It's not that stuttery sound that came from your glitchy software. Try slowing it in iRehearse or similar. I slowed it 50% and it sounds like what lowdown suggests, at 25% it sounds like he's hitting it with two fingers together so he gets a fast slapback echo effect. -
I'd suggest that if your fingers are where you'd prefer a couple of extra inches, you should have been a guitarist
Measured my hand ok from first to last little finger full stretch is 15 cm. But if I turn my hand like I was holding the bass my stretch is 12 cm uncomfortable max. I don't know how that measures up to others lol. I guess I'm impatient and a bit competitive. Anyhow good replies. Feeling more positive
I just measured 15cm stretch on the neck, wrist joint to middle fingertip is 19cm. I've been playing for 33 years. None of it really means sh*t when you see how small Esperanza Spalding is, and she plays string bass and electric like a demon.
Couple points: * The quickest way to avoid feeling crap is to do what you can currently do but do it well. Technical intricacy is lovely, but if you can't place each note with conviction then there's no foundation. When I say 'conviction' I mean those moments when your passages are correct, you know that you know what you're doing, there's a smile on your face and you're listening more to the band than you are to yourself. It will come. * As you progress, you'll find yourself to playing certain passages using a different approach to other people. If you play with the afore-mentioned conviction, this is part of the development of your own 'style'. This is a good thing.
These two points are especially bang on for me.
Been playing 8 months and that's practicing most days for a hour or so, I do various exercises and while my hands are a lot quicker and I'm in control. My fingers are still not stretching. Like I say I really do put in the effort. I have bleed from practicing many times that's with calluses too lol.
PATIENCE! 8 months an hour a day is not long, your body needs time to adjust. Your stretch needs a while. Do you have small hands? Any injuries? What is a hard stretch for you? I have fairly small delicate hands and for me the widest usable stretch for playing scales on a standard 34" scale bass is G A B on the E string using fingers 1 2 4.
-
All the time. If you've not played long, your fingers need to get used to playing and stretching. Practice the stretches after a little warm up exercise. It takes a while, I couldn't stretch far when I started either. Play as much as you can, even sitting on the sofa watching tv, your fingers need the work. There is ALWAYS stuff you can't get. But you can't be the best bassist in the world cos there's no such thing. It's a lifelong process of continual improvement in your musical imagination, ear training, and physical ability. We are all beginners, even the great bassists will (or should) tell you that. The Mustang is a short scale, right?
Sounds like a flamenco strum of a single note to me.
It doesn't sound like a rasgueado or a flamenco tremolo, but I know why you think it does. Sounds like PacMan doing one -

I have the album, and I just put The Fifth into iRehearse and slowed it to 50%. I can't hear anything like your soundcloud link, the notes are single hits, so I reckon it's your Transcribe software glitching. It would be bordering on superhuman ability to tremelo that fast, even the fastest Flamencos wouldn't be able to. -
Actually had no idea their bassist was on BC until last year though.
f***, that is wicked! It's Ant's band, I keep meaning to check them out and kept forgetting. Thanks for that! Superb music!

Ahhhh found it! I love this, it was posted by travismoore in Aug 2012. It's crying out for a decent mix, but I love it nevertheless. Love the song and the vocals.

What do you make of Youtube covers and the sort ?
xilddx replied to ML94's topic in General Discussion
Do everything that gives you a better chance of securing some work. Make sure it's high quality. -
This does it for me, but I've never been a fan of his recorded bass sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCFcWdco1nw
I've seen a few BassChat bands live - every one really good, even if not all the usual stuff I would listen to Nige's Kit Richardson, Pete Academy's Stealing Dan, Happy Jack's Junkyard Dogs, BigRedX's Dick Venom & Terrortones, Burrito's Case Hardin, Pigbag (when discreet played with them) and for a dose of power-pop/punk Low End Bee's The Jetsonics
Ahh, The Jetsonics! Again, they are ace live and I have a couple of the eps. This is one of my favourites of theirs.
Sorry Clarky I actually preferred the previous outfit. Would love to see Dick Venom live, and then of course there's that Kit Richardson! But I think my current favourite is Burrito Bass' Case Hardin - looking forward to seeing them in Lewes in May.
I've seen Dick Venom, fantastic live band! Any Case Hardin vids mate?
