2.
Oh, go on then..... Well, not really, to be honest (at least not for what I play) - but the important thing is whatever works.....
And that's the key point isn't it. All our musical decisions are based on context, experience, and taste and personality. That's why I get a bit annoyed about people saying erroneous stuff about rules, and probably why I upset JTUK earlier, for which I'm sorry, and yet unbending in my opinion.
 3.
I knew that we could agree on something.....
Hopefully we agree there are no rules about bass and kick drum
 4.
Not quite sure what this tells us: after a quick listen I would say that the first example is simple but very tight and is probably what you would record under a vocal; the second track has a more developed bassline with some nice ideas but isn’t as tight (probably as you are trying not to follow the kick too closely) I can see what JTUK is getting at here, thru I suspect that you are playing with some pretty skilled players in a genre that perhaps does not depend on a the same type of groove that you might find in funk or rock and who can make it work Having said that, if you take the approach that you have been talking about playing a decent rock band then, brother, you ain’t gonna get the gig! I did quite a lot of gigs last year in a few different bands last year, playing everywhere from Bedford to the Orkneys. Some of the guys I was playing with have a track record and are pretty decent players. I like to think that I am demand because of my immense charm, good looks and outstanding chops! However, I am told that it is mainly because I can ‘lock in’ with a drummer and make the band sound good……
Point one for me is that it tells us that both approaches can work or not work and that you do whatever is suitable. Point two is that you are right, you have to do what suits the music. I can sit on three notes on the kick when it's necessary and it often is with one of the bands I play in.
 5. I just knocked these two up to demonstrate the effect of bass strictly covering the kick, and playing around the kick. http://soundcloud.com/silddx/sets/on-kick-off-kick/
 6.
I used to a little, i dont do that so much anymore, do you think it would benefit? Cheers
Yes, enormously. Completely, incontrovertably. Set up a loop or two on your computer and play along. Even better, record yourself and listen back.
 7.
Hey BigRedX, no i'm not in a band, me and my friend used to jam together a fair bit a couple years back. I practiced a little with a band quite recently but it wasn't the kind of thing i was into playing to be honest. Willing musicians seem harder to come by nowadays, i run into a lot of people who play but they don't really want to take it any further than just practicing by themselves. Most bands i know of now seems to do an awful lot of covers, which is cool, but they're covers of bands and music i have no appetite for.
When you play at home, do you practice with a click or a drum loop, or to music or something giving you a beat or rhythm?
 8.
I have to say, the way you explain the set-up...it sounds a shambles and a guessimate. I am talking about the pattern going awol and you think that is ok....??? You can all go and get lost in the music..and then pull it all together when you want to get back in to the main pattern. Reading your posts, I think this would be a recipe for a disaster. but then I also get the impression that happy free-for-all train wreck suits the concept. If it happens, then ok...to be expected, if it doesn't, we have a chance of pulling of something really interesting...for the band..!! Why would I get lost in a track..? I am counting to a set pattern..I am not making things up as we go...and hoping it will be alright if we all wave and look out for each other. The way you seem to work...not sure you have a clue, tbh. which is ok if it works..upto a point. But when you have to put yourself into a mainstream situation, I doubt you'll have the tools and will be out of your depth pretty quickly....if you ignore or can't follow simple basics...or rules, if you prefer. Sorry if this offends...but jeeeeeeeeeezus..!!
Oh, I see you edited this post quite substantially. I'm not at all offended. Basics, or complicated don't matter to me, I don't even really think of music in those terms. I just think of MUSIC. If following the kick works for the song, that's what I do. Same for playing on the snare, or playing 7s over 4/4. If it works it works. Singers don't lock in with the kick drum do they, or any other instrument, nor does the bass have to. Nor does the kick drum have to stay on the back beat. I have to admit, I don't really have any idea about what you are trying to say anymore.

And who said anything about you getting lost in a track?
 10.
You are then using the backing track to do the job a drummer would do. Your Kit singer might count the song in but this tempo is pre-determined and the drummer then takes over. It is going to be utterly pointelss to count in at 80bpm and then the drummer do something else. Kit might be the leader and take responsibilty for the count-in..but then that should be set in stone. AT post mortens, you can say that that song was too fast/slow or whatever, but the leader takes the flak for it. No problem, it is their deal...but it would be amateur hour if the drummer changed it mid-song. As for moving around within..fine..but you should all better know where the 1 should be or else you'll likely not hit that intro, so therefore you can get fancy with the pattern but not the time. or else..again amateur hour and a train wreck....or a LOT of visual cues.
I play with musicians who know where the ONE is. What's all this sudden change of tack to tempo keeping then? I thought we were talking about kick drums and bass and locking in?
 11.
I don't get people saying ignore the rules when the most basic rule is following decent time. You need to adhere to basic time because you are playing with others...there must be a template or tempo or else it is a free-for all. If the count is arbitary or a guess, you will pretty soon have a mess. The feel is subjective, the time is absolute. And nexdt rule is to play with people who can do this... it saves you so much hassle and bother. I put it to the two posters who were describing problems with their drummer, that wouldn't it be easier for them, if the drummer played decent time and a regular pattern. The regular pattern is less of a hard and fast rule, but it sure helps if he plays a section consistantly with a set drum pattern. It is total crap if a drummer goes off and starts moving the kick around...for the only reason that he is bored and has just thought of something else to do...when that leaves everyone who has tried to lock in ..high and dry..????
This is simply not true is it. If it's done musically what's the problem? You sound like you are talking about inexperienced musicians who get lost easily. If you are, no worries I'll back off.
 12.
No, you don't ..if the drummers wavers, then you have to keep him on time, you don't want to go with him, ideally. It really should be the job of the drummer,to set time and tempo, but if he can't do it, you have two choices... get someone who can, which is the better option, IMO, or you have to dictate when he can't. This is pain for the other players and really should be the last resort.
Don't agree with the bold bit, but I agree with the rest. The drummers and percussionists I play with are superb and can move around and inside time so I don't have T'Bird's problems thankfully. Kit sets the tempo in her band, the drummer follows. In the TGU projects the backing track sets the time and the drummer flows through it. Sheema the sitarist sets the tempo & tempo changes through the compositions and the tabla player must follow the sitar -I suppose this is a rule, but that's the way it has to work and the arrangements are generally fluid.
 13.
what your saying about kick snare , kick snare is exactly how I would expect it to happen which casues my confusion when it does'nt because I then have to translate in my head where the kick should be and play that. Honestly the biggest problem I have playing in bands is dealing with the drummer its Ok when they start off but normally halfway through a song they tend to get bored and wander all over the kit Perhaps its me - as I said I'm only really a below average player so it may be that I'm not getting it Does anyone else have this problem with drummers ?
Mate, I think you should stop thinking about these ridiculous 'rules' people keep saying we should follow, and FEEL the music. That's sounds simpler than it is though. We all need to learn how to let go of the conscious self and feel the inner music. Then when your drummer hits you with a beat, you will be able to set something up with the bass by 'instinct' (I don't like this word but I can't think of a better), and use your taste and judgement to render it into something musical. Stop following rules and let your musical 'instinct' take over. As soon as someone says 'it's in Db' or 'stick to the ride cymbal' you stop being musical and start following instructions.
 14.
Good for you.
Absolutely.
 15. I'll try to get time to record a bass line without hitting the kick back beat tomorrow. In the mean time, here's one for the geezer who has trouble playing a groove without a kick drum .. http://soundcloud.com/silddx/tin-pan-1

 18.
Worth taking a look at this Warwick? (someone had to do it!) I don't know why they're so cheap second-hand at the moment - they retail for loads more. I play a Corvette too and it rocks! With the spare cash you expand your rig a bit http://basschat.co.u...34#entry1574534
in fact, f*** ME!

 20.
Brilliant piece of music but hardly a backbeat (which is what we were talking about).....
'ere you go .. http://soundcloud.com/silddx/silddxs-brown-bossa-thats
 21.
Brilliant piece of music but hardly a backbeat (which is what we were talking about).....
Ah, I thought you wanted bass not on the kick creating a groove. I'll sort summat out.
 22.
Where did this thread go ? Better put where is it going ? How did we get here ?
Possibly my fault, you have my apologies So did we ascertain what you are going to do with this lovely bass? You could always sell it to someone this side of the fetid pool of division, it would be very much appreciated here I am sure. We have LOTS of bassists who think an old Fender will make them sound whole, and play better
 23.
So,you've never looked at a copy of Bass Player (for example) and though "Bloody Hell..not him(again)! He sucks!"? There are bands/albums that I really like where I would never call the individual players amazing (or even good in some cases)by any stretch, and vice versa. There is nothing wrong with saying "I like......." or "I think....... gets too much attention" or whatever. Everyone does it.
I'm usually thinking "Who the f*ck's that??!"
 24.
This is purely to breed [s]discussion[/s] enmity among my fellow bassists :3
25.
Not sure about these, but I still want a fretless with a granite fingerboard:
I love the dual purpose rule! Flat screwdrivers for opening paint tins, guitars for slicing eggs .. Granite fingerboards for chopping cabbage. Shredding has never been easier.
