1.
Jimmy Haslip and a lot of other players who unquestionably have fantastic ability seem to fall into this kind of smooth jazz / fusion muzak by default . It's a bit of a shame , because I'm sure Jimmy Haslip and many others players in this genre would be great playing in some more unfamiliar situations and different genres of music , and I bet they would enjoy it, too . I know Jimmy has played with some mainstream pop artists in the past , and I would like to hear him in that kind of a situation again . John Patitucci is another prime example . His solo albums for the most part leave me cold ( more than half an hour of one would probably leave me comatose , to be honest ) and for all their technical brilliance he doesn't play anything on any of them that is as effective as his bassline on Walk The Dinosaur by Was Not Was or his tasteful accompaniment on Everything But The Girl's Language Of Life album .
Most of them leave me cold I'm afraid, if I hear one more 16th note triplet descending augmented scale in four note flurries I may sh*t myself. There just doesn't seem to be any beauty or romance in what they do. Of course many will differ, but maybe they are mostly the ones who whoop and holler at the fast bits.
 2.
As said before: Haslip destroys an otherwise amazing album. Just imagine that one with Jimmy Johnsson.
Think that's a bit strong mate, but I'll admit he doesn't really add many thrills.
 3.
Oh yes. Love that energy. But I can top it...sort of. :/ Tee hee. I showed it to some female friends of mine from Zimbabwe and they were laughing so hard both at the parody but also in admiration that someone so hugely pregnant could move so quickly.
Brilliant!
 4.
Not sure you guys have checked out Jimmy with Holdsworth but he played great with this band, a lot more raw and really going for it... whole gig here:
I got the album when it came out, it's brilliant.
 5.
Perfect example of what I stated before. Lots of faces but not a single memorable idea during the solo. Highly overrated.
I'm afraid the entire piece is utterly stultifying for me. Every band like this seems to sound the same. What do they put these guys on? Horse tranquilisers? Duddle-uh - duddlediddleduddlediddle duddle-uh diddlydi - diddlydi di di diddly di-do dah dumb. WHY DO THEY ALL SOUND THE f***ing SAME! Because they spend all day transcribing Coltrane solos? And although I love the Haslip / Holdsworth / Pasqua / Wackerman outfit, I have to say Jimmy's solo on this piece is bland, uninspired, compositionally very weak and totally boring to listen to.

 8.
So where is the Lull review then? Obviously it must have been written, and the photographs taken so why isn't it in this months issue. As consumers we were cheated out of 4 pages in the previous one, so they should have been included for free is the current issue.
Bizarre innit.
 9.
This thread does seem unnecessary really. They have basses that very few other places would even consider stocking. That in itself is why the gallery is worth a visit and they must get a fair share of 'sightseers' which must put a dampener on their general outlook on 'customer service'. If you want to try a fodera with a view to buying where else is there? If you are serious about buying a £2000 instrument why the hell would anything other than the bass itself put you off? If the reason you contact them is to sell them a guitar of course they're not gonna be too fussed about it. They're not desperate for instruments and it isn't ebay you're dealing with.
But it's the same deal as selling any other stuff. Of course you get sightseers, but if you can convert a percentage of them into buying customers, and preferably returning customers, and even more preferably returning customers who create other returning customers, then you can probably create a sustainable business. It's all very well saying I give you an amp and a cable and feel free to help yourself, but that's actually CREATING sightseers who over time are devaluing the stock. You have to use your skills and knowledge of behaviour to sell the gear. There are different types of customers, you need to get a feel for them as soon as possible, show them the gear they're after, or say they're after, and help them come to a decision with your knowledge, experience, and KNOWING the customer as quickly as possible. The buying experience is greatly enhanced by great service. I know people who do their research on the internet and buy in a shop, rather than the other way around. And there are very many people who are worried about buying blind on the internet, they don't even know what to buy, so a shop is of immense value. I undertand people hate being pestered while they are in a shop, but the sign of a crap sales person is one who doesn't think and irritates the customers with scripted generic bollocks. If the sales person is interested in the customer, there are a million pertinent questions you can ask them without being irritating or intrusive.
 10.
Hi disgruntled people when i shop, i hate assistants pestering me, i like to try things, if i like them, i buy them, that is how run The Gallery, we are a shop and there to make money, if you come in and tell me, i'd like to try things but i'm not buying anything, i'm not really sure what people expect of me. I don't just deal with sales, i have to do internet, photos, accounts, amongst other things so i have always lots to do, i will always answer question, i'm not sure why it matters if i'm chatty or not, if you are after buying gear i'll happily sell it to you, i'm not sure why it matters if i'm all sweetness and light. I'm not a robot, i have good days, bad days, And yes as mentioned i do feel bad if people aren't happy with their visit! On the plus side i will be leaving, so all those people that said they would not come back because of the way they where treated, can come back. Re prices we do price match regardless if we have the item in stock. alex
Try working in a hospital, Alex
 11.
Possibly not quite as silly as picking a fight with a dining chair, but a few months back, my left thumb lost an argument with a carving knife. Cutting a cooking apple, and the blade slipped off, went diagonally down into the tip of my thumb, almost half-way through. Fortunately it closed up almost immediately, so I didn't need stitches, but it made the next day's practise quite interesting. Couldn't grip the neck with my thumb, so had to stick it into my palm. Good technique it did not encourage!
I think I'm going to start a crusade against blunt kitchen knives. Every friend's home we've been to for dinner had no sharp knives in the kitchen except one, and she's an ex chef. Blunt knives are dangerous, people, sharpen those f***ers up!
 12.
OK I'm off to create my Kickstarter page... ;-)
13.
This is definitely worth a read then: http://thequietus.co...-the-sky-review And this one probably makes a better point, but is less entertaining: http://drownedinsoun...reviews/4145008
They're from my hometown. I'm not any more I had a listen, the reviewers were right, dreadful rubbish.
 14.
Not that I know of, although I've been outside the more politically charged hardcore punk scene for a year or so. I have a feeling all of this negativity will have an affect on upcoming bands.
I was thinking the other day that music prospers in hard times.
 15.
I'm not a big fan of Plan B, but I did quite like his track Ill Manors (link here of it live on Jules), which I thought was one of the more politicised chart songs of last year. Some interesting lyrics anyway
Not quite John Cooper Clark, but not bad.
 16.
Not that I'm aware of, there's a lot of young indie bands doing the faux working class schtick, which is at best annoying, and at worst insulting and patronizing.
Oh gyod, yeah I hate that. I hate the class system and class-based us-and-them music usually pisses me off.
 17.
Is this actually a problem on here? Or is everyone getting into a big punch-up over a hypothetical situation? Personally, since i joined the forum in 2009/10 I haven't seen anyone try to properly 'flip' items the way a power-trader would. Sure, a few people might ask for 40 or 50 quid more than he paid for something, but as has been said so many times before, an item is only worth what someone is willing to buy it for. I always sell stuff for the same as what I bought it for (or less), but I don't feel the need to get outraged by how much another member wants for their bass/cab/whatever. If any serious attempts at flipping do happen, then they will get dealt with in the ways the mods have already pointed out. I think by far the more serious problem at the moment is the sheer amount of arguing and personal insults that people are throwing at each other recently. Come on guys, none of us are that bad really, are we?
A TINY minority of posts and members do this, don't get it out of proportion you stinking ugly fishface with sh*t shoes.
 18.
It's been done to death, man. It's fair to say that most people (including me) frown upon it, but it's not going to go away. I made a flowchart to help people along:
Exactly. I wouldn't do it, but it if it sits well with their conscience I have no major objections to others flipping stuff if they were clever enough to get a cracking deal somewhere. Like WoT says, it's either worth your money or it isn't. No-one complains about Andy Baxter, so what's the problem with a few people doing it on here? They are probably going to spend the money on here anyway since this is pretty much the best place to buy and sell bass kit.
 19. Usually, the sh*t times generate some new music, new bands rattling on about how sh*t the world is, hippie folkies telling us to cheer up, deth metallers saying old Nick told 'em this would happen ages ago, etc. Has the global recession produced any good bands you know about?
 20.
Sorry about this but. . . The sex pistols are so boring I can obviously see how at the time it was new and refreshing but it certainly doesnt hold that freshness for very long. I do like bands like bad brains as they mixed it up a bit. There's nothing worse than a band who's 'guitarists' can only play a few power chords. Very limited. Yes of course ALL music is affected by fashions but some of it will stay with us forever. Most pop rock will most definately not be. It isn't about intellectuality (word?) at all. Come on, Albeniz, Bach and Mozart can't be lumped in with the rest of any old 'music' I've listened to all forms of rock music throughout my life and there isn't a band in the world that doesnt become dated and boring after a while. For me anyway. Rock is so young in terms of music history. As is all modern media, tv, radio etc and will soon be forgotten as each new 'fad' comes along.. Instrumentalists will always be here, Bands who write hits with the bare minimum of skills will not. Sorry if I seem to be a bit of a fascist. But I am
The only skills necessary are those you need to execute your vision. And yes, the Pistols are bloody boring apart from a few songs. But they were interesting at the time.
 21. The Beatles, great vocals, many great songs, extremely competent players, inventive in the way a highly practised and rehearsed passionate band should be, challenging but accessible, broad range of musical styles, good to look at, very wide appeal. But I've never liked them and they always generate little or no emotional reaction from me when I hear them.
 22. The Gallery is THE bass shop in London for me. Martin is a highly skilled luthier and a very nice guy. But I have to agree Alex is not the most welcoming of people and he's admitted that on here before. He's ok when you get to know him. I've had Martin do some work for me and a friend of mine and I can't say enough good things about him. Overall though, The Gallery as a shop can (and should) do better.
 23.
5 years ago I wouldn't have agreed with you, but recently I'm finding almost all new music doesn't grab me. It's mostly all been done before, and the stuff that hasn't been done before wasn't done for a good reason. Probably not a good state of mind for a musician, maybe it's normal after 30+ years of listening and studying songs.
'Almost all new music'?!
 24.
There's a particular frequency range at the Half Moon that causes a brown note to boom out uncontrolled. It seems to run from C to D. I've noticed it, and commented on it, for bands as diverse as All The Queen's Ravens (Clarky's band) and Doctor Feelgood! It seems to be a function of the room's dimensions. I've never played there, but those I know who have (including Clarky and LowEndBee) don't seem as aware of it on stage as I am in the audience.
Most definitely. However, I go direct via my POD X3 LIVE and had no problems at the HM. The sound guy was highly professional, we had no problems at all and apparently sounded good FoH.
 25.
I will try to find time to listen to some and i will not put a link up to my own until i feel i have listened to enough. Also, silldx, i've had a listen to a bit of Kit Richardsons stuff recently. I remember a post you put about going for it this year. I'm afraid a thing that i think may work against you is........................that maybe it's a little too good! If ya know what i mean!
Not sure what to make of that, but thank you, that's a very lovely compliment! I do think people can accept music with integrity that's not dumbed down, Everything Everything's success gives me great confidence in that. Cheers!
