2.
This thread needs more youtube examples! This is one of my favourite basslines: He doubles the guitar when that's what's required, and does his own thing when that's what required. Playing something unique with 3 guitars, vocals and a uniquely melodic drummer without it sounding cluttered is an achievement, but he always pulls it off. This another favourite bassline of his for the same reasons: To me, those two bass lines are better than most of the virtuoso stuff.
BION, I have not heard Oceansize before, I have now, and I am digging it big! Excellent mate. Great bass lines and playing too.
 3.
Well, a full stop signifies that speech has ended. So try doing this... before you stop talking and see what happens...
I thought these emoticons were giant full stops anyway
 4. Post a recording of your favourite bassline that YOU have written and recorded, and explain why you like it so much. And if it matters, what you used and how you recorded it. What was the writing process? Did it take ages to write or did it just arrive through your 'magic channel' (that's your mind, not your arse btw). I'm hoping we'll get plenty of responses and learn a lot from this, hence me posting it here and not in the Recording thread. ALSO: It would be lovely if you would comment on other members' music, otherwise it will become a dead list, like much of the other similar threads. Thanks.
 5.
Human nature. There must be millions of excellent actors/musicians/artists/etc out there, but only a few are 'celebs'. Some people just get on with their craft in their own quiet and excellent way, shying away from the limelight and attracting little popular attention, wheareas others love to bask in the whole 'celeb' thing and actively enourage the attention - which is easier than ever in these days of the internet.
Fair comment. But as musicians, aren't we a little more discerning than just listening to the 'celeb' musicians, and draw influence and inspiration from a much more diverse catalogue?
 6. So why, when there are millions of very tasteful recorded bassists, do we keep talking about and trying to emulate the same few? Is it because technicality is easily recognisable and easy to measure ones own, or another's, ability against? Are we unable to appreciate and learn from nuanced and expressive playing?
 7.
How do you know when ANYTHING is good? It's like trying to define "taste."
3 [mass noun] the ability to discern what is of good quality or of a high aesthetic standard Oxford online dictionary.

 9.
I suppose the best way I personally can answer this question to you Nige is that if the bass player is making noises I like to hear, For instance I am in love with the bass line from La femme d'argent- By Air I just think that is such a sublime piece of music, the bass line drifts & bounces along like a spring lamb but lighter than the breeze it plays with, it sets a stunning back drop & makes the track something more. So how do I decide if the player is good or bad ? It's almost impossible to quantify in words for me.....It's like someone asking me to sum up how much I love my son in one sentence!
I thought La femme d'argent was by David Soul. But I'm totally with you on this and you describe it very well.
 10.
Uh-oh. This sounds eerily familiar... Sorry, but many "good musicians" are limited in many ways. Are you implying that to qualify as a "good musician" you must be totally flawless in every possible skill related to music?? How on earth does that work? What is your experience in the music "business" may I ask? How many musicians that you have worked with are "good" by your definition? Everyone's opinion varies of course, but to me, bass guitar is an instrument that belongs in a band context. That's not to say that I can't enjoy/appreciate the odd piece of Wooten-esque solo playing; but I just prefer to hear a bass played sensitively in a band. In that case, I think a "good" bass player is one whose playing works within the context of that band and actually adds something to the songs. Maybe this is an old-fashioned view, but it works for me.
This is how I feel. Going back to the way we emotionally evaluate singers, I would think the vast majority of musicians like a singer because of a number of almost indefinable qualities which touch us very deeply. However, for instrumentalists, we musicians seem to focus more on technical aspects.
 11.
then it's not much of a question imho - it's like asking which is better ? nescafe or kandinsky. so i'll leave you to it.
Maybe you have misunderstood my intent then mate
 12.
because i like what they're playing. all judgements on 'good' music or musicians are personal ones and attempting evaluate them in objective terms are a waste of time.
But the question is framed around personal subjective quality assessment.
 13.
Never trust bass players defending "less notes" just because they arn't able to do something else. A good musician is not limited in any way. Then and then only you may trust his playing to be what he really is and not his limitations speaking through him, trying to fool other limited musicians.
Do you apply that same principle to singers?
 14. Apologies for the slightly misleading thread title. It seems to me that there is a great number of great bassists out there who really understand the role of the bass within the context of the music they play, and compose subtle but beautiful lines executed with nuanced playing, a beautiful note that makes one chord of a standard cadence soar, a tiny slide that makes you go WOW!, a little lurch that lifts the rhythm, a space that emphasises the singer's key word in a lyric, etc etc. subtle expression that makes all the difference without you really noticing. These more subtle players are rarely mentioned, all the attention being on a few obviously highly talented players who can demonstrate their amazing ability on bass. So, when you hear a bassist and decide whether you like their playing and composition, and decide they're 'good', how do you make that decision? Do they need to demonstrate great chops, just for a minute, to get your attention? Or do you appreciate their melodic, harmonic and rhythmical playing without the need for 30 seconds of technical display on youtube or in a song for you to validate them? Or maybe you feel it is human nature to focus on the more obvious exhuberant displays, would you have heard of Bakithi Kumalo if he had not done that fretless slap bit on You Can Call Me Al ?
 15. What a f***ing racket.
 16. My favourite Floyd ever is Live in Pompeii. I really must see if I can get the audio of that. DG's guitar sounds are sublime, the atmosphere of it all is totally captivating.
 17.
I'm not going to help you with your query because of the harshness of your mean-spirited opening statement.
I can only agree. Looks like another troll OP cunningly calculated to piss off PF and SB fans now the Beatles one's settled down a bit. But is it art or entertainment?
 18.
Hey mate I don't think I have ever been offended by anything you have ever stated on BC Nige, your posts are always well defined, thought provoking & also respectful to other peoples feelings. In all the time I have had the privileged to be a part of this community I have never seen you say or do anything to be anything but a good person which is why I always respect your views & opinions.Sometimes it doesn't come out right but your intent is always correct. Though I have noticed lately that there is a bit of an era of confrontation within this very site of which I feel a bit fed up of seeing. Arguments over daft stuff that has no actual bearing over real life. It just seems so silly. Not so long ago I had two pieces of bad news, news that really made me question who I am & what really is important in life, it's times like these you look at how you spend your time & think I could get more out of life than what I'm getting, I just need to sort out the negative things from the positive. And that's when I realised that arguing & confrontation is not something to seek out, it's not worth even taking part in unless you are going to get something out of it that really matters. Life is something we all have & we waste our times talking about all the bad things that are. life to a point is hard & sometimes very unforgiving, so why spend our private time talking about negative things when we could achieve so much more ? We all have a passion for the same thing, we a lovers of music in various guises we create music. We do fantastic things, we create songs & play music we love with all our hearts and we do it because it feels good. so why get involved in arguments that don't feel good ? It just doesn't make any sense at all to me. Time is something I don't want to spend on negative things anymore, life should be better than this.
Gav, that's a wonderful post mate, really. I was just trying to express how valued you are on here. Chin chin! x
 19.
Nah mate I'm not being pessimistic I'm telling the truth, I have now abandon the Off Topic section & it's doubtful I will go back again, most of the time I just lurk now. It's simply not worth the hassle.
I think it's easy for many of us who have been here a while to take Basschat for granted. Basschat continually evolves, and changes, through it's members' contributions. I remember a time when we had a lot of people on here (including me) who would annoyingly pick people up on their spelling and grammar, there used to be a lot of that going on. I remember you getting picked up on it back when you were a n00b, you quite calmly explained the reason. You taught me a lesson there, quite a big one actually, I have never forgotten it, thank you. The spelling police seem very scarce these days Thanks Gav.
 20.
There is, but you do have to dig through a lot of erm.... 'stuff' to find it. NGH lived in the house opposite Paul McCartney's back in the Beatlemania days.
Cool, thanks Ian. I was born in the house opposite Hilda from Lieutenant Pigeon and I used to hang around with her grandchildren. Just thought I'd better let everyone know
 21.
This is a thread of apology & making things right. I'm so disappointed that its gone sour, the original message has been lost & I do strongly believe it's going nowhere of value. I Wish that this forum would have a separate area for flame wars & arguments, when a thread has gone that way the mods move the thread in question into that section so people can then carry on using the forum without seeing this crap. When the wars flare up I really do question if it's worth staying on as a user of the forum or just move on. I do agree that there are some people who post on here have a confrontational style (Even if they don't want to come across like it-they still do) and I don't like posting comments much anymore as you never know how your post is going to be taken. It does feel like if you say it's it's a lovely day someone will get their history book out & post up some complicated reason to make you feel like you should not have bothered. The original tone of this thread was of apology & reconciliation, this is a positive thing & somehow negativity has come into it. Maybe its a reflection of the times we are in at the moment. I wish I could say something intelligent & clever but I guess that's for the forumites with qualifications and more time on their hands to sort out. By the way Morrisons is better
I think this is needlessly pessimistic mate. This thread has gone way beyond the OP's intent, but aside from a few arsey posts it's an interesting discussion. I'm still none the wiser about NGH's Beatles connections though. Despite GK's post to the ontrary, there's nothing in that thread about it. Cheer up mate, please post without fear xx
 22. What a superb interview. One of the best I've read. Thanks ped
 23.
I can understand where Alan is coming from. I've known him for years and he is a particularly nice bloke who I count as a friend. Now I don't spend an overwhelming amount of time on BC nowadays (compared to how much time I spent here years ago) but I browsed the Beatles thread while I waited for the thaw to give me access home. I read Bilbo's comment that provoked Alan's reaction and given that Alan has emotional, cultural and family ties into this whole subject I'm not surprised he reacted as he did. I think the comment was poorly considered and inane in the extreme. There's a statement in NLP that I feel applies solidly here. The Meaning Of Your Communication is The Response You Get. I believe that Bilbo should share some responsibility as we all should for comments fired off from our keyboards. Peter
I think Bilbo meant it as cheeky humour as is his wont, but the reaction was uncharacteristic anger. Of course we are all responsible for our comments, They had a domestic, they apologised to each other, and are once again sleeping together. How could we know about Alan's ties? And if we did would it have introduced some restraint? Are we now not to express our vibrant feelings on the Beatles? I remember some berk posting that pathetic comment 'I would' (or summat like that) in an Ellie Goulding thread, her brother didn't kick off, he just said 'oi that's my sister!' (or summat like that) and that was that. I'm sure Alan had a bad day with his vicious retort, but maybe Bilbo did too. They were both throwaway comments that merited no scrutiny. While we are currently happy to call Adam Clayton a useless c***, how would things go if his son was a member? Would we avoid the subject? Be more polite? Or just carry on with the inane insults? Maybe his son would agree Where do we draw the line? I bet there are plenty of us with strong connections to people in the public eye. Are we meant to anticipate that in every post? Do you really want Basschat : The Magnolia Edition?
 24. DO IT! Matched headstocks look delicious. You can apply a replacement Fender decal before your last couple of clear coats.
 25.
I hate to admit it but I agree on Geddy. He can play. He 's good, but nothing particularly original or amazing. In other words, nothing Entwistle and Squire and their imitators hadn't already done. As for Mac -- this is what you're missing. It isn't his technical skill. Anybody playing for 2 years can play pretty much any of his bass lines. It's the COMPOSITIONAL skill. His ideas, voiceleading, phrasing, harmonic sense are all brilliant. Now if you don't get it, you don't get it and it can't be explained so you do. It's a little like the intro to Beethoven's 5th . It's one of the most powerful musical statements the world has ever known. But somebody can say, "Eh, it's only 4 notes. I CAN DO THAT."
Not sure I like your school ma'am tone, but you are correct.
