Niiice... those Novation Impulse's are meant to be great. Very good choice of prezzie by Lady Silddx. 49 keys should be plenty mate, although I know what you mean - I only have a piddly 25!! A classic case of pianist envy (boom, boom) I've been tempted by Logic myself, especially at the current price tag. Amazing value for money. I've invested too much time in using Reason (my regular DAW) to jump ship, it'd be like turfing out an old friend, or something. But yeah, you can't go wrong with Logic. In fact there's a (crap) old joke about 'atheist producers' using Logic and Reason. T-shirt available here if you so choose
Some good gags in there mate My friend and bandmate is a senior music tech lecturer and he reckons one of the main reasons for studios using Logic and Protools is that they render very accurately. I hadn't even considered this might be an issue.
Good stuff Nige. I've learn a bit of guitar playing as a result of these challenges, although I still tend to draw piano and synth lines by hand. I need to practice more...! PS: did you end up getting yourself a keyboard? I use an M-Audio Oxygen, a great little k'board for playing around with synths, etc, but I must admit I quickly run out of keys whenever I try to play anything on it!
This challenge is really good for giving one a push to get to grips with new instruments. Your little Oxy is lovely! But I need more keys that that. Diane got me a Novation Impulse 49 controller for Christmas, it's brilliant! The keys are semi weighted and have a decent feel to them. Although I kinda wish I'd have gone for the 61 key version, but the 49 is fine really. I also replacedReaper with Logic 9, simply because the sounds that come with it are amazing and legion. I suppose I could have saved over a ton by just getting Mainstage, but I felt I needed to learn Logic. By god it's complex!
Subjectiveness, envy and laziness is and will always be the number one enemies of human evolution. You have to be open.
Agreed. I wasn't having a go at you or your playing by the way, you are clearly a very good bassist and musician.

Getting lots of ideas for this, great pic Paul! I now have to rapidly learn how to play some piano to do this
People go crazy over mediocre players who are famous. This guy is playing his ass off and it's like "Eh, so what." That's human nature for ya.
Well now, humans tend to go with what moves them. Inti is indeed playing with a lot of skill, nice expression and nuance, but it doesn't particularly MOVE me, I have heard most of the progessions, cadences and arrangement ideas before and without a singer to really give it a unique personality for me to get my teeth into, I don't get enough personality smacking me in the face and demanding me to listen. I don't really count the tiny bit of vocal at the end. Maybe songs with more vocal might entice me to listen. I appreciate it takes skill and musicality to put this music together and play and record it. But musicological appreciation is not my bag anymore, if music doesn't move people then it's not going to get a reaction from them. So, the fact Inti is playing his ass off should not mean that he is better or worse than someone playing a single note line with the requisite expression and sensitivity, and your comment regarding famous 'mediocre' bassists is a bit off really and entirely subjective. You don't get to be a famous bassist by demonstrating your amazing technical facility on your top line Fodera, you get there because you are a part of some MUSIC that a lot of people are MOVED by.

Mine change from time to time, and I think I'm developing my own approach finally, with volume pedal and soundscape type stuff as well as the usual pumping bass lines. Big influences on my approach to harmony and bass line construction are .. Way beyond my capabilities but I find endless inspiration from Scott Thunes on Zappa's Make a Jazz Noise Here .. I lent this to someone years ago and never got it back. Nevertheless, its force remains very strong in me, Ani Das is a great bassist and musician with a very strong bass philosophy.
Chili Peppers - By The Way. The album (and song) that got me into bass playing. Still a big influence on how I play. Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking. Someone told me once after one of my very first gigs that I played like Eric Avery from Jane's. Told the guy I never heard of him and them! Got the album the week after and became a fan.
Were you aware that Flea said he heard Eric Avery and it made him realise he was overplaying so he revised his style for BSSM to make his bass lines simpler but with more rhythmic impact?

Great MODERN technical bass songs to practice to!?...
'Cause it's the usual arpeggiated math-rock fayre that anyone not on the autism spectrum would ignore as a stuck-CD.
I'm afraid I can only agree. Even the guitar sounds are pretty generic. It's good, but I'm not feeling it. I do like some prog metal / math metal or whatever you choose to call it. I think our own Steve (stickman) Woodcock's band Linear Sphere are a great example of how to combine the technical aspects of the genre with really good songwriting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmIim7rJP3w -
Oh yeah - absolutely. I was really replying to an earlier post that suggested that someone was somehow being greedy and unsporting by trying to sell at a price higher than the one that they (the earlier poster) had in mind. I think that's niggardly and unfair. Nobody on here deserves a special price just because they are a member of this site. That's the point I was trying to make...
I completely agree -
True. I don't really like this idea that Basschat should always offer mates' rates.
I have never really thought they were 'mate's rates'. I see it as offering a decent price to compensate for not having to pay ebay and paypal fees. -
Hi All! I'm currently stuck in a bit of a rut with the technical stuff that I'm practicing along to, things like Mars Volta, Jamiroquai, Rush etc that I know too well and am not really benefitting from! Wondered if anyone had examples of any great new bands or even songs with interesting, technical technical bass-lines that I might not have heard? Any contributions will be much appreciated! :-) Thanks, Al
What's your aim in doing this? Serious question. -
I don't envy anybody, such a waste of emotion. I would love to be able to play the organ (inc foot pedals) though.
Please take the 'envy' in this thread in a lighthearted way. Thanks
Keyboards for me - especially after seeing Rod Argent play. Pulls off some amazing lines and makes it look so damn easy. Whereas every time I sit down at a keyboard I hunch over it with a maniacal look of glee in my eyes before hammering out the melody to Feed the World.
I have just started trying to learn to play keys a little. Tommy Mars is greatly inspiring me, and I'm making a little progress with Gymnopedie 1
In principle I completely agree, but everything I've bought and sold on BC has been via PayPal gift . I know it's risky, but all the people I've bought from were long established members, had lots of posts and all had good feedback. All were great to deal with. I haven't nor won't buy off the people who join (or at least appear to join) BC just to flog something. They may be genuine, but I think the BC marketplace is built on a community spirit that involves building trust with other members. Having said all this, buying basses or amps of any real value are probably the only things I'd really want the protection of PayPal for. I hope the this was all a misunderstanding and that the OP gets sorted, but I do agree with the previous posters.....once money has exchanged hands the seller has a responsibility to live up to their part of the bargain come hell or high water. There are very few excuses that would be acceptable in this particular case.
I agree almost completely, except for the paypal gift bit. Paypal will just put their %s up to cover the costs of dishonest gifting. So we all pay in the end. If someone doesn't want to pay the paypal fees, they should supply their bank account details and use BACS. I refuse to use the gift option these days, although I have a couple of times in the past at the seller's request. Never again. -

Other than having the occasional recurring dream / nightmare of standing in for Alex Lifeson (but my guitar never works), I am perfectly happy where I am. Although I really want Kit to reach the giddy heights of success and stardom, then I'd already be in my dream band with famous muso
Definitely most of it from the fingers and in particular where you place your plucking hand i.e.. next to the bridge over the pickup....... Jaco use to play between the bridge and the bridge pick up with only that pickup on with full treble (not sure of the bass pickup volume he used but think it was 0). James Jamerson played just past the pickup. Liked the ZVG video
And what a horrible tone he had That's cool, it's a matter of taste, but like Led Zeppelin, he's inspired an awful lot of sh*t since.
Very generous of you, and regards to the maestro; I shall be shortly reaching 63 (next August; no cards, just cheques...), so was not kidding when suggesting a second lifetime. Re-incarnation..? Possibly, but I'm not sure that I'd be given a second chance, anyway..! A short version of a family anecdote..? Yes..? OK, sit yourself down comfortably... My parents were from the 40's, and met through war efforts and all. At the time, the latest rage was fur, in the form of mink coats, stoles, fox and such. We became a family of 10, and a large dog so, despite my Dad carving himself a fine career as an aircraft fitter, we were never what one would consider to be 'rich'. The family grew, of course, and grew up, and left the nest, until the old folks were on their own. Retirement came, and my old Dad decided, in his wisdom, to treat my Mum to something he knew she had always dreamed of: a fur coat. I don't know the details (mink, rabbit, whatever...), but it surely was a real coat such as would have graced any silver screen post-war. My Mum was somewhat lost in it (she was never a tall lady; rather slight build...). She was, of course, delighted. ... ...but it's not the same, having something, or having something to dream about. She now had the coat (and not any old coat, but a splendid fur coat...); however, she no longer had the dream. My Dad admitted as much, some years later, that if it was to be done again, he'd not do it. It was, all things considered, better kept as a dream. Tablas..? Yes, I dream of doing what I saw Shakti, with Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram, do. Nah, dream on... Again, many thanks for even proposing such an offer. I'll take you up on it next time round, perhaps (if stoats are accepted as pupils, or should that be 'grass-hopper'..?).
Nice post
