Its roughly 4-5 months for a new build now. If you are ready to jump, do it asap as the prices are going up very soon! I got a 'rough' stock list of what they have available in the UK a few weeks back, and they had two Natural lined fretless Stingray 4 3EQ basses in. One H, one HS. Are you going lined or blank?
-
The 2 vs 3 comes up a lot, and I think it's fair to say forums hype the hell out of the 2 EQ at the moment. They both sound great IMO, id like to add a 2 EQ to my collection in the near future. Barely any audible differences.
I must say, if I were to get another EBMM I would go for a Big Al 5 SSS, it was by far the most fun of all of them which I had. (If only they were a bit lighter)
Plus one...cool bass. Loved your old one.
I got into them after massive Warwick disappointment so there is your opposite view
The same, but regarding the five string variants. I've always been a Stingray fan, so take it with a pinch of salt perhaps!!! Their 5 string basses are superb. I was always on the fence about jumping onto a 5 string, and the Ray 5 HS was my gateway drug to it. Now I have three and another on the way, all Musicman. Not to mention 2 4 string Rays. Can you tell I like them? Seriously though, try one out. I tried Lakland, Warwick, Sadowsky, etc, and came back to what I wanted 15 years ago; a Stingray 5. Might not be your cup of tea, but only you can be the judge. Keep it stock, and ignore the second hand market on here if you are worried about re-sale. They sell a lot better on the EB forums and ebay. If you want a bargain, pick one up on here.

I have my new bass head, Now for a cab.. Any Idea's?

Two RS210s. Done. Great tone, great portabilty, LOTS of punch and plenty of modern sheen or vintage warmth using the tweeter, and the RH750s crazy amount of options. The co-ax tweeter on the RS210s is really nice...it will give you a nice sparkly high end, but not that awful cheap plasticky high end. Have them vertical or horizontal, or even just vertical next to each other. Oh, and the prices are just about right. The euro means they are getting cheaper. I've had a fair few cabs in my time and the price/weight/tone ratio is spot on with these. They obviously match very well with the RH450/750. I had an RS212, and I liked its thick low mids with a little more 'umpph' and fatness down low, but ultimately, I didn't need three TC cabs so I sold it to get a Genz Shuttlemax 9.2, and kept the matching RS210s. -
Dare I say it.... I think I've finally settled on a bass

The P bass is Queen, with the Ray as King. The Jazz is like a jester. I like 'em all, and I'm considering getting another P. -
Influences, but with a new angle?

Who do I like but sound nothing like? Hmm, tough one. I grew up playing Nirvana first and foremost when I was about 12/13. I don't sound anything like Krist Novoselic as we have totally different bass tastes/I do like his lines though...simple but effective, and not afraid to take the lead melody in some lines. Nirvana opened up the floodgates to punk for me, and made me realise that bass WAS the right instrument as it didn't have to sit in the background. Who do I think I sound like? Again, tough one. I definitely know I have Matt Freeman's runs in my system. My old drummer Tweeted me the other day to say something like 'just listened to the old EP we did, the crazy bass solo run is mint'. I like to take some of the limelight off the guitarists sometimes, just like Matt Freeman (although my tone isn't the same really). An old friend, who is also a bass player, said I played basslines like the bassist from the Get Up Kids, and he seems to add nice melodic runs and not stick to root notes. I definitely have my own sound, as we no doubt all do. Now I've got older i'm trying harder to learn more styles. Now I play 90% with fingers, and play less aggressive and more funky stuff, I've no idea who I sound like or who I am no doubt copying. I'm not good enough to be Flea but I like his style. -
But how much 40Hz can you actually hear? Granted that's the gut rumbly area but this is very similar to what the thumpinator does which get's nothing but praise. It's obviously not a huge roll off down there either if it's only -6db by the time it reaches 40Hz aswell. All aside, I think mine sounds great and I trust my ears
I much prefer a tighter low end with a massive low mid thick kick...thats my kinda tone. Treble to taste. Hence probably why the 750 works for me.
Yes...that bass is unique! I totaly love its appearance. But I dont really think that it´s sound is unique too. Definitely, it doesn´t sound bad...but it is really very sterile! Try to compare with G&L for example...if you can.
G&L are nice....but totally different...obviously haha!

I'd love to hear one of these....
I know what you mean about the " boing" in the Musicman sound ; for years and years I wondered what it was that gave them that characteristic zingy sound. Subsequently I have realised that it's mostly due to the parrallel wiring of that pickup which gives the Stingray such a wierd spread-out frequency response with a pronounced scoop in the low mids and an emphasis in the upper-mid, low-treble More recent EBMM designs that offer the option of switching the pickups into series mode demonstrate just how profound a difference this makes: in series mode the basses sound much more like other generic brands and disinctly "un-Musicman like " , for want of a better term.
Hmm, not sure they sound totally different, just louder and more middy. My Sterling 5 HS is wired in series in all 5 positions, and its just got more pronounced low mids and its a touch hotter/louder on the gain into the amp, but it still sounds like a Musicman. Like a Ray? Hmm, close, but it is its own beast.

My opinion? Im a huge Musicman fan and NOTHING, not even a Stingray, sounds like the Bongo. Totally unique bass. I love it. You have to consider the fact the spacing, neck, etc, will be totally different, and perhaps even the scale. In addition, Musicman's humbuckers are big powerful unique sounding products IMO, so you will lose that.

That is brilliant. If its Matt, he did the same thing for a guitar combo I used to own, and sorted a replacement speaker/checkover. I've also had contact with him over the first Genz Streamliner I had, and they said to be safe, they would ship me a new one, which they did. Makes me feel less worried about eyeing up a White/Tort/Maple boarded 2012 P Bass now....must resist....

I think part of the APM does save your speakers from a lot of sub bass that they don't really need. Glad you are happy with it, and the volume. Goes to show that depsite one review, its a super loud amp as they said it would be. The rest of the mag reviews are very favourable. JTUK - I think partly why you might like it is because it does have a very similar tone to the Thunderfunk amps, apparently. Eg, a nice low mid kick, not so 'pingy' up top (there is more top end available on the 750 cf to the 450 though), and brilliant in the mix.
-
I can see what people wouldn't like in them. Verr raw, very 'punk' in its own way, experimental, with a crazy vocalist. I love what Hooky did to the bass (eg made it a lead instrument and played it how he wanted to).

Jazz v. Precision Bass- question from [relative] newbie
Musicman20 replied to barnettiuk's topic in Bass Guitars
I like both, but I was brought up mainly playing P copies and yearning for a Ray. Now the Ray takes top spot, but I still love my Fender P. I am very tempted to get a 2012 P with maple board to see if the pups are 'all that' after the switch they made. I have a beautiful lightweight Fender Jazz, but I do get annoyed with how it gets 'lost' in the mix. -
I think its a pretty good price. The latest German made Warwicks are SILLY money.
-
Out of all the amps that have footswitches, this one is actually worth owning. Tuning, Mute and 3 different presets all at your feet!
-
Wow, that looks like a very pro build. I hate to make comparisons as it makes me look more vain than I am, but I much prefer that sleek tolex classic look over the Barefaced cabinet styling. This cab above looks very 'finished'. I am still very interested in one of these. I, and no doubt others, would be willing to pay someone to make one up. Great thread.
-
These cabs just go to show that small manufacturers CAN make a professional looking cabinet without compromise. These look stunning as well as having impressive design.

What are really unfashionable at the moment?

the downside to buying a 'good' bass....
Find another band?
I don't play in bands like the hectic ones I used to, (although I may go back) but I must admit, the adrenaline rush and crowd reactions were brilliant. Nothing quite like it. -

Musicman20 replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Bass Guitars
Get a beater bass. If its the kind of punk I used to play (bordering on hardcore) it was pure mayhem in the crowd and on stage. I thrashed the hell out of a bass or two and they took it, but they were only £450 basses. Best bet would be a second hand Sterling or Ray already pre dinged.
