I have asked Jon for more Photos, but I'm going to see him a week this Friday, so thats probably my best bet to get photos of the bass. I can't wait to see the thread of your new bass Dan, hope it turns out to be an epic like the Doodle build
. Mines not been that quick to be honest, this has been going on for 6 months, although in fairness I did tell Jon to take his time with it. Best bit is the wife still has no idea I'm having it made, if she gets wind of it, it will be time for one of her Latina nuclear strikes, when her head goes its megga, so I'm staying shtum about it.
I'm going to tell her it was a bargain special from evil bay !
He he!! Yes, Jon and I are busy cooking up a little storm ourselves!! It's going to be something spesh, I think!
Wow! You have done very well to keep it quiet chap! I can barely keep quiet when I buy a flippin chiccy bar.. let alone bass gear of any sort. I can't lie to save my life.. or anyone elses for that matter! -
Currently I use a pedal compressor and a half rack EQ in my rack system. The most annoying thing about these 2 items is that they are the *only* items in my rack that require a 'wall wart' adaptor. I have to have all sorts of extra junk in the back of my rack to accomodate them.. soooooo I'm after one of these or similar:-
http://www.ashly.com/retired/product/r-dpx-series.htm
It's easier to click the link than for me to post all the pics. Some are rather larger.
Both units pictured feature a graphic or parametric EQ and a full spec compressor in a single rack space powered via a normal IEC mains lead.
So I am looking for either one of those, or if you guys (and glas) know of anything similar/ the same as. Preferably staying away from those wallwarts!
I *could* go for 2 half racks, but again this could double up on leads etc. -

Thats a +2! -
Good gracious! Thats quick!! I really do look forward to seeing this bass, as you know John!

Anyone know about the Artec 'Big Dots' tuner? Is it any good? Acurate?
http://cgi.ebay.ie/Artec-Big-Dots-Tuner-Pe...9QQcmdZViewItem
I see Artec also do a graphic equalizer pedal with a tuner built in too! -
Hi Dood,
Steve has made some very useful comments and I will be making a couple of design changes before it goes out again, but as soon as I am happy then your are on the list.
The comments Steve has made are great and to do with things like the output level and the brightness of the tone both of which are easy to fix. Steve will agree with this I hope but the compression side of things appears to working and provides a vintage valve compression effect.
If the modified design fits the bill then I will design a new PCB as this will reduce the build price, I am hoping for around £125.

Thank you so much! I look forward to giving the li'l fella a jolly good workout with 'Doodle'! -
So to summarise, we have three different reasons why people use compressors:
1) As an effect in it's own right
2) At the end of the signal chain, in order to protect the head from moments of ham-fistedness ;-)
3) To smooth out the lows and highs in the dynamic range.
Yes?
I have a Tech 21 Compactor which I tend to use in the 3rd category. Currently it's at the
start of my signal chain, after the tuner and before octaver and chorus. Is this the right
place for it, or should I stick it at the end of the signal chain?
I also find that when I'm using a valve head the effect of compression is a lot less
noticeable/useful than when I was using a borrowed transister head. Hm.
I think at the end of the day you can put the compressor anywhere in the chain, but I think (IMHO) that the position you have it in is the best with the pedals you have and what you want the comp to do. I do the same. Compression before any EQ/effects etc but after any filters/autowah etc.
I have been switching back and forth between tube and SS quite a lot recently and have found that with valves I really have to wind the compression back or it starts to sound a bit too choked.. but when I switch back to SS, the compressor doesnt sound like it is doing much.I do notice that if I run my valve preamp hard I can notice the valves compressing to the point of not having to worry about a compressor at all! freaky! but.. the downside is if I push it a little too far, I get a bit of nasty distortion in the bottom end.
So, in short I agree that with valves (which are compressing already) don't seem to benefit from light compression, as it isnt really noticeable.. but heavy compression sounds a bit grim too. -
"2" spkr, .5W, 1 input, 1 output, 9V battery inc. " case closed! lol

Thanks for the link, ill have a read later but my point is this has not happened before at this venus with this set up.
I got you PM but im home now so ill email you in the morning when im back at work
blimey Dave! Your band is stellar! - I don't envy the drive home!!
.. I know what ya mean, just playin! -
My guitarist Andy James uses it all the time, but I think he only uses it on sealed necks. Paul Gilbert was the guy who told him to do it!
-
oooh cricket Dave! I'm not sure how I can help with your situation! Bizarrely I have found the opposite with the wooden stages I have played on. I'm usually asked to pull my bottom end back a bit as the stage seems to rattle in polite sympathy!
I take it the rig sounds ok today? Mebbe just a bad room? -
Direct sales vs retailer sales makes up most of the difference in price. Epifani are probably only getting about $500 for their cabs from the retailers, if it makes you feel any better!
If I'm not mistaken Epifani prices have come down a little since the launch of the Series II, as the Eminence woofers are less expensive (but just as good) as the B&C woofers.
Alex
and that does actually make me feel better about the price tag ;o) I am a bargain hunter and I am only prepared to pay what I feel something is worth.. and some of the gear I have bought has tested me in that respect a bit. It sounds amazing, but should the price tage really be so high (pretty much a given in the UK) - I guess we just have to get used to the extra costs that are slapped on top for shipping, mark up and the mysterious "boutique kit tax" that appears to be levied on all 'non mainstream' gear. That aside, the last 5 cabs I have had from different manufacturers have all been stunningly good. -
I'd LOVE to see a picture of your cab dood. I adore 6x10's... They are very sexy. The Epifani 6x10 is perhaps the sexiest of them all. If you could put a skimpy bikini on it or something aswell, i'd be much obliged.
Job for tomozz.. I'll see what I can do! she's sooo sexay, I think she needs a name! lol -
Steve,
VT1-Compressor (prototype) is in the post. Be kind, please
Dave
OH my Dave! the li'l fella is out in the players domain then? This pedal I have to try! ;o)
CK.. if no one else is in the queue, please may I be next? -
Hey John! yeh, I'd seen them a while back and really just dismissed them for their size at the time, but physically it wouldnt bother me now. I'm sure there's something to be said about the cabinet being 'round'. I suspect there would be some issue as usual, with cramming to many drivers into too small a box. I think there has been discussion about how inefficient iso-whatsis face cabinets are.. I wonder how they fair against other cabs out on the market (if they dropped the rear facing cone).
-
he he!! there's a certain amont of exasperation when you look at the cost of these boxes then look at whats inside them!! ;o)
Surely the combination of letters and numbers: UL-610 constitutes an oxymoron?
lol.. it only weighs 37Kg.. it's an easy 1 man lift, considering my ole Hartke 4.5's were 45Kg each! ;o) -
I have just turned a Kermit shade of green.
It does raise the question as to what is wrong woth your existing rig?
lol.. Dave, I think the only thing wrong with my rig is what's commonly known as the 'human condition' !!!!! lol Why cant we just be happy with our tone? Always having to fudge with it all the time!
I will bring it to the next bash for a good sesh. -
Isay four-ten, one-fifteen etc.

Larry says hart-kee on his voicemail ;o) -
Cool.
Have you moved in to it yet?
I drive it to town! It has wheels on ;o)
Where did you buy from dood?
I could have shopped around I guess and went to our european outlets for a good price, but I ended up buying from the Bass Gallery. (I needed a cab sooner rather than later, for gigging etc) I was very impressed with how it sounded in comparison to the rest of the BG stock. (My tastes anyway!) -
The cab is sooo huge it has it's own gravity.. I just couldn't resist the pull of the UL-610. It's a little monster!
-
Having just purchased an Epifani cab, I am certainly interested in this post!
-
I have a 4" wide "SlapStrap" from www.geraldreese.com - it's lurrrrrrrrvely.. makes any bass feel a lot lighter than having a 2" strap digging in. I recommend them!
-
or get an EQ pedal.. you can then boost the frequencies that you want for a particular solo sound. I used to add a little middle, cut the very lows and the very highs, giving the sound an almost wind instrument smoothness.
Pedal tuners - which one?
