People know I bite easily when they say 'bass is easier to play'. But, I have to stand up for us bass types... 'they' usually shut up when I show them all those lovely 'you tube' links to what we are doing with bass these days lol.

now *that* I like the look of!
Me too Dan. In fact you're enthusiasm about them was one of the reasons I went in for it when it came up.
I just hope it fits in with what I've got already. It should do, I reckon.
Awww cool mate! I'm chuffed for ya. ALl I can say is.. it will fit in nicely for sure!
i used to own one of those cabs - I loved the sound coming from it but at 125lbs it was no easy lift. I believe Lukeward got in contact with Larry Hartke to astke if they were planning to release a light weight version of the XL cabs at a higher spec than the TP series. I can't remember what the response was though.
Yes, I gave Larry a bell a cuppla times, but didn't get thru, after he left some VERY complimentary remarks about my playin' bless him! I wanted to ask about NEO cabs too.
The nearest I can get is to buy 4 of the new NEO cones that Eminence now make.. i think they are called something like ca2003 or something similar anyway.. they look exactly the same as the Hartke cones, but with the added bonus of being much lighter. I can see them having the same deep tone as the Hartke one. However, with a bit of fiddling with WINISD it looks like they will happily go straight into a Hartke cab ok. Something I would love to try!! -
Lovely! Grabbed those! There's some stunning playing on the tracks.. and the other freebie MP3's on the site. One or two tracks remind me of the Barbara Thompson Paraphenalia, with Dil Katz on Bass.
4) It seems odd that with concert DVDs they don't have an extra feature where you can focus on one player for the show - wouldn't cost much to slap a feature like that on, and the market for 'MUSE in Wembley Special Edition: with extra Disc Featuring Matt Bellamy's fretboard for an hour' would actually be pretty significan, I reckon.
It'd be nice to see more of that option. I have a Queen DVD and a Dream Theater DVD both with 'bass player cam' options for a few songs. The novelty still hasn't worn off. Deacon is god lol lol! -
Woh! Lovin te Hartke!! The 4.5XL is my fave cab ever!
-
I like Steve. He's a top bloke. Always great to talk to and owns far too much nice gear. (thanks for letting me try your Epi' cab... if you have seen my posts you know what happened next!)
Thanks for the link. Worth visiting for the freebie radius templates even if you don't need a pickguard.
Cheers,
Alun
Yes! What a simple and clever idea! -
Aye its true enough, Tonyf and I reached a deal over his. Its a gorgeous sounding amp - less grindy than an Ampeg, clearer than the Bass400+ (although that is a nice amp), warmer than an Aguilar. In short full, clear, well balanced and sweet.
I just need to get some cabs for it and hopefully that'll happen in a few weeks.
Phyrexian has his for sale up on Talkbass IIRC. I don't know if he's sold it yet.
I can't even put into words what that pic does to my loins. lol. She is gawjuss! -
In another thread Ped was asking about microphones for miking up his gear. I have heard some really good results from the T-Bone Condenser microphones. Especially for vocals. I think Shure gear has always been artificially higher in price. I don't think it is because they are actually better than everything else either - I guess there's the perception that if something is higher in price it must be. nooo-h'waaaaay!
-
P.S. thomann do some WICKED condensers. My mate James bought a £60 '87 look alike and it is fantastic value for money, even plugged into a 'midrange' channel strip.
-
Hey Ped! Check out what microphones were used in the models on your POD.. and also the ones used in the Ampeg SVX plugins. Pretty much the industry standards I reckon ;o)
I really like the Nueman (spelling) U87 condensers and the similar types. A nice open sound with the ability to translate bottom end on to 'tape'. For a bit of extra room noise, plug in a PZM for boundary representation, up on a wall for example. Oh and send a DI feed as well to mix in for effect. -
Errrmm we have a new Wiki already and each forum has stickys that include recommended repairers/luthiers etc!
With ref to 'cheapest prices on the web' stickys, that'd be hard to manage with so many outlets on the web changing their prices and stock so often. You could pay me to do the job full time if you like lol lol! -
I have just been watching the vid and had to manually close my jaw! Wow! thats a AAA grade pile of..ermm.. pine he's got there!!
-
"MAKING THIS INSTRUMENT EXTREAMLY FLEXBLE AND PERFECT FOR THE MUSICIAN WHOLIKE'S THING'S JUST THIER OWN WAY." - Except for those who have shoulders, as this thing will be so top heavy it's likely to dislocate body parts!
I reckon it'd be fun to play though, if it wasn't (imo) so damn ugly. 13 strings, yes great.. but a bit of time of the body design wouldnt have gone amiss he he he!!! -
no wurriezz! ;o)
-
oh.. and yes, you could always take a stereo DI to FOH .. I have a little DI box that I carry with me for that.
-
Nah the effects wont be cancelled out. Not only that.. the cabs needn't be on top of each other. ;o) One either side of the drummer! lol
-
Ah, well, if you go Dual Mono, you can use two different bass cabinets and control the output volume of each seperately - handy if the cabs are different. You could emphasise the low end or high end or midrange and balance the two cabs with the volume controls.
Then, if you go Stereo, you could bi-amp - splitting the frequencies output by your preamp using a crossover - and then sending each to a dedicated cab.
Can I just clarify. With a stereo power amp you can go dual mono, Bi amp or stereo using the 2 channels. (Bi-amp and Stereo being 2 different setups) The last meaning that you can run 2 full range channels using stereo FX like ping pong delays, reverbs, panning effects and choruses. Once you go stereo, you'll never wanna go back! ;o) (especially if you are an ERBer!) -
A desk man also told me it increases your S/N ratio - but don't ask me why!
Hamster
In theory it could, but there are other reasons why it would decrease it too, especially in a noise environment such as 'the stage' ;o) -
'one of those loose terms'
In it's simplest terms it's using more than one mic to record a source. How that is carried out is open to a zillion options from 'MS' to 'boundary recording' or recording from the front and rear of the speaker (in the case of open back cabinets or some custom closed backs like the Peavey guitar range that feature a Mic inside the cabinet). Using 2 different types of Mic's on one cone for example can open up some tonal possibilities when they are mixed together especially if they are switched out of phase. The MS technique (- there are plenty of audio forums that can describe with pictures better than I can here to explain) uses mics at a tangent to each other and then mixed phase to create a fuller sound. (I hope I described that ok!!)
You could also have 2 mics on one source that are a small distance apart to pick up differences in tones from that source.. for example, a mic facing an acoustic guitar bridge and one pointing the sound hole. 2 completely different source tones. -
and not a fan of basses where the sound mostly comes from the electronics.
If it's pickups you are refering to, in an electric bass, a large percentage of the tone comes from the electronics/ pups. More so than the woods used. What I mean is that you can make a more noticeable difference to the voice of a bass by changing its electronics than you can by changing the wood alone.
Sounds unlikely doesn't it? -
Hey Luke!
Yes.. to be honest, having played with my Epifani cab, I even reckon the Techs have the edge.. especially with the top end. They aren't cheap, but they certainly aren't the ridiculous boutique prices of *the competitors*. I loved the Tech cabs loads! Very PA like and light as a feather!
Thomas! Its not toooo late! I will accept an endorsement deal from you! lol -
I like the look of the Sandberg 5. I have played a couple of 'bergs but not enough of the others to make a choice really. If you fancy something 'not the usual' as you have mentioned, here's a disgusting plug for a bass I have up for sale.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18 .. I have a chap coming over next week to check the bass out. If for any reason it's not for him it will be available.
If a 6er is a bit too much.. at least take a look at Shukerguitars.co.uk anyway .. disclaimer: or any of the other fine Luthiers we have in the UK that carry stock.
On a side note, I was listening to the MP3 samples on Ped's website . He has a Japanese made Baccus 24 and a Bossa Jazz bass. They sounded sooooo nice! Mebbe another 2 to add to your list?
