I'm back..
OK, John.. the ASB2's and the DC's are completely different in tone. in it's simplest description, the ASB's are P style pups in a soap bar. The DC's are dual rails in a soapbar. The former of the two has more of a P style plummy sort of sound, whereas the DC's have a musicman style rasp and more bite to the top end. It could be said that the P styles have a deeper bottom end, simply because the DCs are far toppier. (interesting adjectives dan!)
Don't forget EMG also do a 5 string P style pup too.
Both of my Shukers have these pups. The Elite has the ASB2's and 'Doodle' has DC's. The tones are very different. Which you go for in the end will be down to your preference between P style and DCs. You will find that when both pups are on together you will get a nother difference in tone too.
Another thing to take into consideration is that the output level of the ASB pups is much lower that the EMGs. It's not a 'problem', but I do prefer a stronger output and for all my basses to have the same output level, so i dont need to mess with gain controls all the time.
Ok, suggestion time. How about 1 of each style? Have an EMG DC and an EMG P style soapbar? EMG have quick release harnesses that would allow you to unclip them and switach positions. You may like the DC better in the neck position, but the connector would allow you to swap the pups over (as they are the same size) into the 'other' position without having to do any soldering. -

The ASB-5 is the same size as the EMGs. The ASB2-5 you mention is narrower. -
I'll give you a proper review of the 2 in a bit.. but, the EMGs and the basslines you mention are actually different sizes. I think the EMGs will fit better than the SD's.
I'll pop back later. -
the mixer will amplify the signal to drive earphones, via a dedicated earphone socket. it will also amplify the signal through it's outputs enough to drive a power amp for example. It wont amplify the signal enough to drive a loudspeaker though. Some larger mixing desks have amplifiers in them, but that I think is outside the scope of what you are requesting.
I have dug my mixer out, it's a Phonic MU 802 model. There is a smaller one (even better for you) the MU 502. It has 5 inputs too! This means, you can, like I have been doing this evening.. plug in your stereo / MP3 player /CD and your bass then play along to your music through earphones without upsetting the neighbours! -
awww fangkoo! I have some pics too, i'll have to dig them out. Homer had a good few too I think.

There's G77's video on my MySpace page /doodonbass

I can tell you about my Ishibashi (non export) 70's P bass, if thats any help (PB70US model, not PB70).
-
Gary, your amp had caused me much anguish! I had been thinking for a long while about it, having played one down at Bass Merchant. I think I am gonna see if I can get the EBS classic preamp to go with my poweramp!
Someone is a lucky person. I look forward to hearing who has bagged it (if they are a BC user). -
Here's a quick tip -
Once you have been given your EMS tracking number (E*****************JP) enter it on te parcel force website for a more detailed breakdown of the process. As soon as the parcel is said to be 'sorting at depot' just go and get it yourself - in my experience they tend to send you a letter saying they want you to come and get it about 2/3 days after this.
Mee too! Ishibashi were there all the way too. Great service, can't recommend them enough. -
My gut answer would be that there may not be much in it (noticeably) especailly if what was expected to be the lighter piece ended up just being a heavier lump than usual. If you see what I mean.
-
Hmmm.. could be difficult. I guess another option would be to get a jaguar bass body and have it routed to spec? Know any wood machinists? Or even a local Luthier?
awww.. it'd be dangerous for me.. I'd start getting ideas about other things to do whilst I was there!!!... "oooh you couldn't rout for a variax install.. and ermmm a MIDI pickup.. oh how about a mini kitchen sink install?" -
failing that, how about one of those minimixers from behringer or phonic. Mine was 45 quid new!
This I *think* is it, but thought it had a different model name. certainly looks the same!

Check out the EBS Microbass http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=104 could well be close to what you are after!

I stuff some normal packing foam underneath the rear end of my poweramp to take up the strain..well, actually.. I used to. My Powersoft is actually light enough to sit at the top of my rack without any undue stress.
Dave, I still have that nightlight ya sent me ;o) - although it no longer lives in my rack as I no loger have any ac sockets in the back of the rack. -
He is in the process of doing the work at the moment. To be honest, the prices are reasonable. I think it would vary from job to job.. but my 7er isn't your usual 'set up' in terms of what most bass players want, so I'd expect it to cost a little more I guess. I'm not sure what the going rates around the UK are, but he's cheaper than rsome idiculous london prices!
When the 'red special' was being 'cloned' by Andy, the guitar was actually X-Ray'd in order to find out the exact size of all the acoustic compartments and and other parts of the build that couldn't be 'seen'. Now, thats attention to detail! I was amazed! Apparently, the company that Andy has used to make bespoke metal hardware uses designs with a tolerance of up to 100th of a mm!!! -
One to add to the list!
To save me the journey of travelling up to Sheffield to see Jon Shuker for 'Doodle's first service, I have enlisted the extraordinary talents of Mr Andy Guyton, who is based in East Anglia. This chap is the very same chap employed by Brian May to build his replica 'red specials' - no, not the cheapy ones from soundcontrol.. the ones with 3 noughts after the price tag!
Well.. I figure that if Mr May can entrust his personal guitar to the man.. thats good enough for me!
Anyway.. top bloke.. check him out..

Hammmmmmm thats a gawd aweful noise!! -
Big Bottom - Spinal Tap.
I think the bass pretty much has a monopoly on that track! ;o) -
In a departure from my usual selection, todays choice will be the awesome playing on Thomas Lang's version of the classic "Me and Mrs Jones." The bass is right in your face all the way through. "Mwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh" like it is urging to get out of the speakers and onto your lap!

I'm getting a bit of an old skool vibe too! cool!

Most Alesis rack units run from 9Vac. I am in agreeance with Andy though, you'd be fine running 9Vac into said unit,as long as the current the PSU is supplying is enough. Usually specified in milliamps (mA). To be honest, if you pick up a cheap AC transformer and measure the out put with a DMM etc, you'll find the output can sway + and - of the specified value anyway. I have had 9V units reading in excess of 14V lol!!

I have a question!
ok, from what I can see in the manual, one channel has bass and treble controls, the other has a middle tone control. So, you can boost/cut bass and treble but the mid stays the same on one channel.. t'other one you can cut/boost the mids but not the bass and treble. So, if you use both channels at the same time, cutting the bass mid and treble from the zero position in theory will have little effect as the other channel without that control will negate the drop in volume at the affected frequency.
I hope this makes sense! - I'd want the eq sections to all be in series, so when I scoop the middle out, it isnt still 'there' in the other channel's signal.
(I havent had a chance to play with the pedal.. this is all theoretical, using the manual as a guide,) -
Looking forward to it. I know my guitarist will love it - he's very much of a metal background. I can't listen to a lot of metal (just 'cos of the shout/scream vocal and some of the thrash drum grooves) but your stuff isn't like that. Just sounds like good prog rock to me without the flowery self-indulgent stuff.
Thank you! I really appreciate your views. Yes, the first listen or two can sound a bit hard on the ole lugs, but there really is melody in there and I thank ya for spending a moment to listen to the choons.
I was reading a comment the other day from a chap who listen to about 10 seconds of one song and decided that all of it was quote 'widdley sh*t'. Now.. I love my prog and we really enjoy doing stuff to challenge us.. mebbe a bit endulgent! but I like to think that its well constructed and interesting ;o)
Cheers again,

EMG (active) v's Basslines

Me too Joe! Sometimes I forget about 'that sound' - and then I pick up another bass.. play it for a bit, then plug my EMG loaded basses back in. Never ceases to raise a smile!
I really do like the SD ASB2's though. Little low on the output mebbe. i use an EMG booster control to match the output of my EMGs which helps a great deal.
