1. I was reading (i think on this forum) a post a while back where someone asked "why don't manufacturers build custom amps in the same way that luthiers do with Guitars?"

I'll skip the answer, but I just wanted to say that I think you have hit upon an excellent idea, making 'modular' units that can be built to spec. I have a bit of a review to write with respoect to how my rig has changed totally in the last few days and the ability to custom build opens a few doors. Interestingly, There are so many people building basses and cabinets, Amps and "the bits in between" appear not to be 'fussed with' as much. I think this is something I want to investigate further as I have zero woodwork skills but have an unhealthy interest in electronics!

  2. I know there's a minority of stereo users out there, but if there was always one thing that made my choice of preamp even harder, was trying to find one with a stereo FX loop with a DI out (post loop) for each channel. The Warwick Quadruplet has one, as does the EBS classic, I think. but none others come to mind at the moment.

I suspect not many people will want it or need it to warrant the cost addition.. but it'd be nice! (I have actually half decided to start building a preamp myself, including all the things I like - I have the rack case and most of the components too - but I'm lazy.. and it has always just been 'half' a thought! lol lol)

  3.
I've been wondering the same thing myself.

I'd like to see Markbass stick a couple of their power amps in a chassis for a twin channel 1000w power amp that only weighs 5kg
I sent an email to MarkBass a while back (month or so ago), suggesting that they make the F1 a full 1 u rack and stick 2 poweramps in it, to make a full stereo rig.. maybe with a stereo effects loop (YES!) or a crossover to make a Bi-amp system.

It'd not be a massive deal to do it.. but alas, I didnt even get a courtesy reply.

  4. Powersoft website

Check out the spec of this audio menace!

  5.
I think powersoft do a range of 1u lightweight p/amps.

    Second mortgage time tho!!

Yup I own and LOVE a powersoft 2004 model. It's hifi clean 1Kw+1Kw RMS in a 1u rack weighing around 8Kilos. The new price appears steep, but when it eats the likes of the very top power amps for breakfast, the price tag isnt so bad. I have heard some glowing reviews of these amps and can understand why! Some of their 1u racks can chuck out more than 3KW RMS!
Dood and I both mention the Class D 1 u 1200w amp offered by BK Electronics. Also you can find the Peavy DPC1400 power amp sometimes on Ebay with a similar spec. Wallbassist had one for sale a while back.
BK Are fantastic! I have bought a fair amount of gear from them, including amp modules and the 600W D-Class unit below. I was originally sceptical about them, as it was an 'unknown value' in amp manufacture. but they actually build a lot of OEM units for other companies.
I bought the tiny one from Dood.

That's about as much power in a small package that I've found. There's also the Crate power brick and I think Bose do a small one, about 200W if I recall rightly.
Still goin ok then!! 600W RMS into 4 Ohms IIRC? - This module is very clever! it will slide into the back of ANY cabinet (full range or otherwise) - 4 screws to hold it into place and you have an active speaker cabimet. Yup.. you only need to carry a cabinet and your pedals! no need for a seperate head!

There are other 'lightweight' amps out there.. The market will eventually catch up and build more and more based on these 'lightweight' designs, including D Class, H Class, SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) modules and ever more emerging technologies.

  6. lol! yup! ;o)

I love the George and Alan adverts.. i'm such a kiddy! *gets all excited* I even made a ringtone out of em for my pda! *sad....very sad!! there's no hope for me!!*

  8. blimey! you wroked that out? DUDE!! get out and get some fresh air!!! lol lol

*whispers* actually, I wondered where all my time was going in the day.. oh!! Writing this I have missed 30 posts!

  9.
Heh .. I know how you feel. Jon's a great guy to talk to, and always really helpful, but I'd never say his customer service was perfect. It's more a case of "excellent when it happens". I think his focus is either 100% on building the latest master piece or 100% on his family (more so at the moment than normal) and never the two shall meet.
That is so true. He definately needs an admin gohper to take pics, handle e-mails, and maybe do first-pass quotes or something.

Internet access at his workshop probably wouldn't go amiss either. From talking to him I get the impression that he goes through his emails when he feels like it rather than religiously every night ... but that might just be due to his current circumstances; or perhaps a false impression I've gained from our conversations.
Hmmm, well As you have pointed out, Jon is a 'one man band' at the moment and doesnt have anyone to do all the admin/website/photos/tea making responsibilities. It really isn't a case of 'when he feels like it'. The guy is always in the workshop, creating his machines of beauty. Last year his missus actually had to drag him off on holiday, to take a break. Very true!

If he had internet access at the workshop, it probably wouldnt be much use, as he is on the 'go' from the minute he walks in to the evening when he leaves. probably not a lot of time to answer emails as well. That probably why I get most of my replies after 10pm, as its the only quiet time he gets!

I think, rather like me, Jon comes across as very laid back. Most would believe that I actually am sleep walking! He isn't.. just has 13 builds to contend with..I'll be adding another soon!

I think if Jon had an admin type, it would help admin stuff along no end.. blimey.. If I lived closer, I'd do it!! Infact, I would go as far as saying if anyone wants to know anything about Shuker and I can help then drop me a line.

  10. Actually i was totally unimpressed with his video. Some are destined to teach, I suspect John had a fair amount of pressure to do it, being in 'his situation'.

OK, well I guess we haven't mentioned his name a few times already.. so I won't go ahead and name a few tunes. Actually.. I am having trouble picking just one song. One of DT's gig set mainstays is a track called Metropolis, from the Images and Words album. Not actually one of my favourites, but there are some great passages in it, along with the obligatory tapping bass solo.

How ever, for daft dexterity, there is 'The dance of Eternity' from 'Scenes From A Memory', an instrumental with more time changes than british rail. ummm.. there are so many! 'Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium' , a few tracks from the album 'Falling into Infinity' where John plays the Chapman Stick.. errr .. I think the best way to get an idea of their stuff would be to buy any of the recent live DVDs. Live at the Budokan or 'score' are very much recommended, as is the slightly older 'Metropolis 200: Scenes From A Memory' show.

If you look at Johns fingers on his right hand.. I swear they are all the same length!! lol!!

  11. Hmmm.. lemme see. I'd feel bad about putting one in front of the other!! ha ha ha!!

John Deacon. T'was him who got me into all things Bass and for that I would love to thank him in person!
Billy Sheehan was probably the first bass player i heard playing 'outside the box'
John Myung was probably the next bass player to stand out for me, as I'd started playing a 6er a cuppla years before I heard DT for the first time.

John Pattitucci, Dil Katz, Geddy Lee, Claypool, Newstead, Sixx, Mick Karn, Dirk Lance, Steve Harris, James Leach,Stu Hamm, JJ Burnell,Jerry Best, Pino, Lee Sklar, Nathan East, Neil Murray oh and Kim Khahn have all had a very huge influence on me..well actually there are so many more!! The first 3 would be there though.
