Fudging trade-offs.

A bit too sterile looking for me too.
Or a Jazz Bass Special (PJ arrangement on a P bass body and Jazz neck) or the Fender Aerodyne, which is a sweeet PJ config Jazz bass.

    http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/ClassD/ClassD.htm

Are the specs any good on this amp, I'm really lost when it comes to this sort of thing.
Yup! Thats the one! I wrote a bit about the module back in BassTalk days.. but essentially, big thumbs up from me!

What I really liked about the module (other than the fact that you can slot it straight into any cabinet to make it 'active' is that you don't need a preamp at all to drive it. The input is instrument level already (or you can plug a microphone - balanced XLR straight in) This means that you'd only need to use a preamp for tone shaping. Less gain means less noise/hiss etc.

The unit IIRC weighs about 3 kilos too. I'd say yes, it was a very good spec!

    Or there's this one too..

BK build OEMs for a lot of PA companies. I think there gear is pretty damn good.

  3. I am using a Trace V-Type and yes, I have been investigating using a channel strip with all the gubbins on. It'd be interesting to compare as it may be a good enough reason to pop the Trace out of the rack. as a side-effect I'd be shrinking my rack down even further making it lighter than ever. always a bonus!

I had a bit of time to tinker last night, using a little mixing desk I have at home to test some theories. I have found a couple of signal paths that suit what I want to do.

I have also toyed with building an amp to spec, as I reckon I could get pretty much everything I personally want into a 1u rack!! - Thing is I'm a bit lazy and it may never actually leave the drawing board!

The hardest part was trying to figure out how to design the front panel.. but the CrazyKiwi Steve posted a question asking the very same question. The answers were, to say the least, very helpful!

  4. Yes, sorry.. me thinking aloud! I'll buy/recover a 240vac-9vac transformer and plonkit in an ABS box with an IEC socket fitted to it So i can use my 'dans world' distribution that has 1 spare IEC lead. I'll plug that leads straight into the PSU.. jobs a goodun as they say, Robert's your Mum's brother, etc etc

As for racking the 1/2u kit.. there's a good few companies that sell (mainly for IT stuff) 1u shelf inserts. Mine has a whole array of different sized and shaped holes in that cater for many of the industry standard fixings. Thankfully my EQ box adheres to those standards, so it was just a case of screwing it on. Pedals and PSUs get mounted using large heavy cable ties (and said mounting holes) to ensure they dont move.

I have just found that the Line6 "PX2 9VAC Power Supply" is an 'inline' psu (as opposed to a wall wart) and maybe interested to see if one of thise will fall off the back of a lorry.. or at least something very similar. I only need 9Vac 800mA, so I don't think my search will be too long!!

  5. I'll take a look at the VF1 anyway, thanks so much. Yes, i suppose it is impractical to squeeze a transformer and socket onto the back of these smaller units. There would be less of a problem if the PSU had a cable coming out to a mains plug. I'd just feed the cable out without having to use some sort of extension plug. It looks like I can grab a suitable transformer, pop it in a box with an IEC socket fitted to it and mount it to the back of my rack tray that holds the EQ in place at the moment. A few pounds and just a little soldering too!

  6. Not sure where you are based, but there's one down at Bass Merchant in Witham. They also have a couple of Warwick 6x10's and a Markbass 6x there to try out too.

I liked the SWR. Bright and punchy with a good girth to it. Though I think you'll find that the Aggies *sound* deeper. My money would be on the Aguilar GS212's. I was seriously into those. I was about to buy a couple, but then someone had to spoil the fun with Epifani!

  7. Not a Sei, but here's a picture I took (from a distance) of a Chris MacIntyre 5 string jazz, black with matching headstock.

Chris used to work at the Gallery with Martin, before leaving to start his own successful company in London.

Here is said website and the very same bass http://www.mcintyreguitars.com/jazz5.htm

belongs to an acquaitance called James.

  8.
Would the EQ/Compressor go between your pre and power amp?
Yes. It would also play the job of a dedicated preamp as well.

    Compressor > preamp > FXloop> EQ> Effects > Loop return > Power amp

    or

    Compressor > EQ > Effects > Poweramp.

My FX unit has a dedicated section that has been designed to drive a poweramp directly, which is rather handy!

  9.
I would love to try an Epifani amp but they cost so much more than a MB head i cant justify it.
I had the utter misfortune to have to play an Epi 902 (??) the big daddy to the 502. Aww how depressing.. i really - i just cant oh.......

That and the EBS TD650 had me excited like a school girl. Shaweeet!

  10.
I don't!

Channel 1 EQ is used in the side-chain in/out for the compressor (channel 1), this is used to 'shape' the compression.

Channel 2 EQ is in the signal path in the FX loop.

    Pete
Interestingly, I do wonder why more compressor companies dont put a side chain filter in as standard. the benefits outweigh the additional pennies it costs to add one.

  11.
Also when you consider that 100db is like a loud rock gig and 75 is like the sound your car probably makes traveling along the motorway, that 25 db of protection really does begin to make sense.
Good analogy!

  12. I'd add that both my Tobias and Shuker Elite 6 (pretty much sold now) have soapbar pups with P style coils in them. I have a preference for those in the bridge position. Sweeter sounding I think. (well actually as long as they are not *too* close to the bridge itslef, J style pups sound nice in the bridge position too)
