1. A fair comment stan. I actually agree, if you cant tell the difference, then it'd be pointless buying anything if you didnt need it. I heard a big difference when I bought both my 4.5XLs. I was very lucky to have a whole range of cabs to try, including the transporter range and that of other manufacturers, such as Ashdown, Ampeg, SWR and Trace Elliot.

At the time, I was young and had some disposable cash to buy what sounded the best to me, so the opportunity to go to an outlet with such a wide range of gear and crank it nice and loud wasnt to be missed! yippeeee!! Talk about kid in a sweet shop!

    I haven't really searched hard but here's a price for the 4.5 http://www.soundslive.co.uk/categories~nam...-Cabs~ID~62.asp
and one for the 2.5 http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~H...-XL~ID~6280.asp
I think you may find cheaper out there too.

oh.. sorry that I was talking about the 4.5XL, but i have more experience with the .5 range 'on the road' so thought it was worth mentioning.

  2. Yes! Mike needs to update the site a bit! I know a chap called Simon who does a bit of webby stuff.. owns a certain 5 string P bass ;o)

Mike and the boys are lovely chaps, very accommodating. Big thumbs up from me. I bought both my Tech cabs from them and nearly maxed out my bank account when they waved an EBS head under my nose. Nearly went on a bread and water diet!!

On a related note, Mike is looking into building lightweight NEO cabs to take on the 'big boys'. I look forward to seeing these. ;o)

hmm.. yes.. I wish they would employ a musician to control cutting in and out of camera shots/angles at live gigs.. at least they'd be able to centre on the musician doing the solo instead of the singer standing around scratching his backside. It seems to happen quite a lot with TV coverage of live gigs and is absolutely hopeless!

  4.
The Cure did a song called Never Enough. I'm sure its dedicated to bass players. I've got more power than the PA but it does not stop me wanting more.
lol.. ain't d'at da troof. Nuthing like the trouser flapping bottom end from a huge stack!

  5.
I play with circa 700 watts into a 3x10. That's plenty loud for me. It doesn't stop me wanting a 6x10 tho :)
I play with circa 1000 watts into a 6x10. That's plenty loud for me. It doesn't stop me wanting a 12x10 tho
    then..
I play with circa 2000 watts into a 12x10. That's plenty loud for me. It doesn't stop me wanting a 24x10 tho

see what I did there? lol! I'm a big kid who loves toys!

  6. The Transporter cabs are lighter, have lower spec (but not vastly) cones, the cab build is not so 'heavy duty' and the XL's wipe the floor in terms of tone and volume in comparison to the transporter and VX range.

If I had to chose a cab from the XL range, it would without a doubt be the 4.5XL. An awesome (but slightly heavy) cab. The 410XL is slightly less deep sounding, but I think have a bit more low mid punch. If you aren't too bothered about depth of tone and want to save your back, then go for a transporter cab.
If however it is just your back you are concerned about.. then there are a good few NEO solutions out there that I would suggest over the transporter and VX range.

I had a link somewhere (will have to have a bit of a search) for an online shop that were doing the 4.5XL for next to no money.

  7.
They'd get lost on a 7 string neck though I think.
Hi!

But it'd be a shame not to try it ;o) Actually, as it happens Jon and I were going to put LEDs on Doodle, but my bass neck has so many carbon inserts in it, that there wasn't any room left for Mr Simms to drill out the neck! So we had to forget about that.

"Doodle 2" the working title, may well be a different story! lol

  8.
Me too, I've been talking to Jon about it this week. :)

What a stunning piece of maple on top. Jon was right about it looking like you could swim in it.
Yes, that wet look lacquer is just sexay!! My (sold) Elite 6is due to be picked up soon, so am naturally looking forward to finalising the design and getting started! I reckon I'll be going for a headless singlecut design.

Gawwd this forum doesnt do ya wallet any good does it? LOL!!

  9.
I'm considering going with a seperate pre/power amp, probably an Avalon UL5 with a powersoft power amp.
However my prefered option is to just buy as transparent sounding head as possible, my options here are an Epifani UL502, or an Acoustic image either a Clarus or a focus.

I use an Epifani UL310 series 2 cab.

The idea is to just amplify my bass, I have a very versatile pre fitted to my bass, and I think that it's very easy to completely ruin your sound (without realising it), by over enthusiastic tone knob tweaking.

Anyway, has anyone any experience of the above gear.

I only play jazz and funk, so I don't need masses of power.
Hey KJB, I'm going to put a vote in for your modular approach. We pretty much know that most quality power amps (like the one you mentioned) are 'transparent'. I like having the ability to chop and change as I like, so being able to split the pre from the poweramp is a bonus.

I'm having great fun with this signal path at the moment:-

EBS Multicomp compressor > Alesis digital EQ (half rack) > Powersoft power amp.

No preamp at all! I use the EQ to 'EQ for the room' and then boost top and bottom for different styles on the bass. That is as transparent as I am likely to get to be honest.

Oh.. and I have recently relearnt that transparent is good. HiFi is good. Flat Response actually, for me isn't. 3 very different descriptions of tone!

I'm still using the Trace Elliot V-Type preamp for particular sounds. Awesome for a bit of recording bite. The signal path above is really tastey though!

  10.
Withi that price Bracket, i would go with the Hartke 410xl or 4.5 XL.

Push the boat out a shade and it would be a Tech Soundsystems ND410 cab (like Doods old ones) and ill hopefully have one soon!
+1 certainly!

  11. Agree with Ped.. Sometimes a little adjustment of technique is required, but it is very much possible. Don't let anyone tell you other wise. I slap on a 7er (16mm spacing) . Bill 'The Buddha' Dickens slaps like a crazy mofo on a 9 string! (I reckon he'll have some clips on you tube.. possibly)

  12. Congrats! Thats great news!

I'm lucky to be endorsed by Shuker Bass YAY! I still have a deal with Rotosound but am just sorting out a new deal with The Bass Centre/Elite strings and Warwick (for the Dark Lord strings).

All of which are bloomin excellent and have been brilliant with me. I change my amp gear so much I haven't given that side of things much thought what so ever. The Shuker thing is very important to me though.. 'speshly with Doodle n' all. ;o) Jon maybe a small company.. but..well... you know what I think! Genius!
