1. I see Thomann do a rackable DI box. I use a stereo passive DI from 'Palmer'. Cheap as chips, but really good transformers inside. Rumour has it they are Jensens, but I'd need to open her up to take a look! lol.

  2. The advantage of DI over line out is reasonably straight forward. There are many resources that can explain 'Direct Injection' better than I, but I'll try to simplify as much as possible.

DI is a low impedance 'balanced injection'. What this means is that your bass signal is split into 2 signals, one 180 degrees out of phase to the other. The 'transmitter' for want of a better word is designed to send this signal down longer cables with less effect on the signal (degredation etc). when the signal reaches the other end,at the 'balanced line receiver', the out of phase signal is flipped back 180 degrees and summed with the original signal.

Now what difference does this make, you ask?

Well, any noise that is pickups up along the cable on the 2 signal paths will be 'in phase' on both 'wires'. Now, when the receiver flips the signal over, the noise on the wires will now be 180 degrees out of phase with each other. When the receiver sums the 2 signals together the noise will be cancelled out leaving exactly what left the transmitter 'sent' in tact.

A line out signal does not have this ability, but you'll be ok with short cable runs on a line out. Also 'DI' is essentially a standard, so you can pretty much guarantee connectivity between all DI ins and outs, as they are all at line level and around 600 Ohms impedance. Line out signals can vary between instrumet level (bizarrely) and SERIOUSLY hot signals.. lol.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Specifically a rack unit, or just one small enough to fit into a rack? You also have the choice of active or passive, depending on where in your signal chain you are putting the DI. Passive *usually* being the cheaper but less flexible solution.

  4.
Speaking of which... whatever happened to the Owners' Club idea that was being discussed about 80 years ago?
ummmmm.. I'd love to do one.. but my web skills are aweful! I had a chat with Si' about it at the time and would have to ask for his abilities. I wondered if one of those online galleries would have been a good idea? Buying a domain name is child's play, so at least a site could have a meaningful name.

  5. Hey! Thanks guys. I'm certainly no web designer, so the page was knocked up quite quickly! Over the coming weeks I'll be updating and tidying to make it all posh n' everythin'. The pictures are in there, which is the most important bit.. one or two are round the wrong way tho' *laughs* laziness!!

  6. Could be anything really. Speaker cable and connections? maybe a dirty socket. I used to have an amp that would lose poweramp output. It ended up being the sockets for the effects loop. You know the contacts bypass when nothing is connected to the loop? Well, mine..ermm decided it wouldn't bypass every now and then!

I have also seen a guitar amp that had the wrong (physical) sized fuse in the poweramp section. When the valves warmed the pins up they would disconnect the fuse and turn off the HT to the poweramp valves he he!!!

I'd say to isolate the obvious first, before you worry about a faulty amp. The possibilities of fault are unfortunately a long list!

  7. Due to the excessive amounts of porn contained within the original Bassworld and subsequent BassTalk forum threads for this build, I have decided to make a concise photo-diary of the complete build on one page.

Over the space of around 9 months, the original posted thread saw over 950 replies on more than 30 pages of posts and gained over 29,000 hits/views!! Obscene!

I managed to grab this screen shot for posterity what must have been a few weeks before we lost everything from Bassworld and BassTalk. I do have a rough backup of every page from my thread, but it would have been impossible to repost. I was so excited to have got such a warm response from all of you on the forum and I think it is fair to say that everyone contributed towards the build of my bass in one way or another. THANK YOU!!!

OK.. so here it is, the compressed edition of the mammoth "Doodle" thread!

    [drum roll]

    The complete Doodle build diary!

Once again, as per the original threads, I invite your comments and input. My bass has already had some cutomisations since the completion of the build and I will be adding to the thread with details soon!

    Happy reading!

    Dan.

  8. WOO HOO! I feel all warm and fuzzy! I reckon a J Bass with a PJ configuration will look awesome! Not to mention having a PHAT ole tone. I have heard those JJ pups 'unleashing hell' to paraphrase 'The Gladiator'. They sound really good. Phat and meaty.. and lots of other *big* sounding adjectives.

I'm sure you can see that the custom bass route is a highly favoured one on the board! I certainly can't argue with it. Congrats on a sweet spec. I look forward to seeing the build.

Which reminds me, I have a thread to update...

  9. Thought I'd take this opportunity to share my imported Jap 70's Fender P. This is a non -export model.

How she arrived, looking very Phil Lynott

And how she looks now, all John Deacon.

    Love her to bits!

  10. Hey folks! Try not to have a company use TNT either! As they will lose your parcel!

    "That's a bit cr@p isn't it?" I hear you say!

"Yes!" I reply "especially when they admit the parcel was signed into their depot and they emptied the van themselves...and it's still in there..... somewhere!"

Honestly, what sort of people get employed to work in these places? Not happy! an hour n' a half round trip to be greeted with these muppets.

  11.
In a similar vein, it occurred to me that I don't go into SC as I did my local music shops when I was younger because they don't do lessons. Seriously, if they had 'Local Academies' or whatever that taught too then they'd have a lot more people through their doors, which eventually means more sales.

Of course for those branches that are based in city centres space may be an issue, as would transport be for those on industrial estates.

    hmm, perhaps not then.
My ole mate Matt Goom has been doing this with his drum business/shop 'Norwich Drum Academy' since he first opened the doors. It is a very successful venture, opening lots of doors for him.. So much so, that he is now on tour with Glenn Hughes!!!

  12.
Haven't been in there for a few years now, was still Academy of Sound when I last visited. Is Greg still there?
Funny you should ask, I bumped into him on Sunday.. Greig is now in Cookes. I have known him for years now. Top bloke, excellent guitarist too.

  13. Infact, come to think of it, now I am expecting the delivery of my new Pod XT rack.. do you want my rack tray mate? It just occured to me I wont have room for it! PM me, you can have it for postage if you want.

    Dan

  14. Hmm, just a thought I guess. The other option, that I have had to do in the past is to put the tray in upside down and the gear 'hung' from what *was* the base plate. completely secure with afore mentioned cable ties lol!
