It comes out when I touch the strings :)
Thanks guys, I do believe my keyboard is now swimming in coffee.

  2. It's his cell phone number alright! ;o) Also speak to him on MySpace too. Though as you can imagine he gets sh*t loads of messages everyday.

I was originally drawn to Hartke cos.. yes I admit it.. they looked pretty! lol..

But I was very lucky at the time to try out pretty much the whole Hartke range Vs Trace / Ashdown /Ampeg / SWR, back in the days when the Bass Centre had a stock of everything! Hartke quite literally blew the competition away when it came to the sound that *I* want.

John, I have to agree though.. when it comes to weight; doing my back in a couple of years ago put me off anything even remotely uncomfy to lift. - Don't think my back will ever full recover. If these new cabs sound as good as the 4.5XL.. well.. I'd love to get the opportunity to find out!

  3. Well spotted Pete. I was havin a brief dicussion with Larry earlier in the week. He said there will be some more info to come. I have asked if its possible to know when the gear is hitting the shores over here. Hopefully he will get back to me with an answer.

  4.
I am in the south east (bit of a problem re: Shuker basses but they look so good I would probably make the trek). Can anyone give me a steer on where to sample some of the beauties mentioned in the south east,Jazzbob
Where in the SE are you?

  5. At least you didn't make the classic faux pas of wearing a 'clockwork orange' face mask on a visit. I could only yempt the poor fella out of a darkened cupboard with chocolate hobnobs.. and then I had to promise never to wear the mask again.

Aww it was like seeing a scared puppy on fireworks night.

  6.
from the Fender website:

The ’50s Fender Bassman was the pro bassist’s answer to amplifying a great new invention: the Fender Precision Bass® guitar. This powerful 50-watt rig could easily compete with the common instrumentation of the day: horns, piano, four-piece drum kit with calfskin heads, and maybe even an electric guitar through a nice, new 10-watt amp! By the ’60s and ’70s, the original all-tube “Tweed” 4x10 Bassman was popular with rock, country and blues guitarists as a reliably great-sounding and easy-to-use guitar amp. Even some emerging British amp designers of the day copied its circuitry for use in their most celebrated designs.
Yep, and the Fender Dual-Showman preamp design, that is very similar to the Bassman has found its way into the likes of the best Alembic, Ampeg, Marshall & Trace Elliot amplification.. and there is no doubt more!

  7. Oh and whilst I think about it, there are different modes that the POD uses, depending on what you are connecting to. Make sure you are in the right mode, to get the best out of it! - The POD isn't really a 'plug in and go' straight away.. it needs a little tweaking before it turns into a bass monster!

  8. Take the output of the wireless and plug it into the 'line input' of the XT. If you have a look in the manual of the POD, you will find a section that enables you to switch the input to the back of the unit, using the small button on the right hand side of the front of the POD.

My suggestion would then to come out of the POD's 'Model' 1/4" output and into the Amp below. My preferred method would be straight into the return of the effects loop. thus negating the need for the amp's preamp altogether. Seems a bit pointless when the POD is full of tastey preamps! - but thats my own opinion.

If you want more suggestions how to hook everything up, I'd grab a good cup of coffee and read the POD manual from front to back!

  9.
*rescues the topic from the dead*

well guys, I'm thinking about ordering a pair of these things. just a question though - should I get the Etymotic ER-20 or the Alpine Music Safe Pro?
Both are actually quite similar, but I found that the resultant sound you hear is different between the two. To be honest, they are SO DAMN CHEAP in comparison to how much your hearing is worth, you may as well buy both and see what suits you the best, then chuck the others in your case as a spare.

Then in the meatime, save some cash - buy some ER15 / ER 25 moulded plugs.. ;o)

  10. Its worth mentioning that the Ampeg 810 alone very much has a colour and tone, almost of it's own. I use an SVP preamp with a D Class power amp, which is a fairly good replication of my ole SVT 2 Pro head. However I Use an Epifani UL-610 cab.. and it makes my whole system sound very different to an Ampeg stack.

  11.
Hi Dan,

I think I may be reading too much into this, but I think you may need to consider other facts than how the p'ups sound on clips: external noise particularly.

I'm pretty sure there's no 'mojo' in the manufacture/winding of simple pickups, and other than J/P/MM styles and series/parallel wiring there's not much difference between the Delano/Nordstrand/Bartollini brands other than the current fashion.

The exception to this for me is active p'ups such as EMG/MEC/Status, who have a much lower noise floor for RF interferance from TVs, low-power lights and WiFi signals.

I saw a pic of the doodle with some electro luminescent wire a while back. I was looking at attaching such things to basses, and for most I couldn't get the inverter withing 2 meters of most p'ups without getting a high pitched squeal, the exception to this was EMG or MEC loaded basses where I could sit the inverter 10 cm away without noise! I actually spent some time with Jon looking into this, and the only real solution was to use EMGs.

Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to put you off the Delanos, they sounded very nice to me at BassDay, and I'm certain that with your experience you may already know all of this, but I just want to point out that there may be things that you can't EQ out that you may not be used to having been an EMG user.
I understand where you are coming from. Certainly it is something we can try out on 'the bench'. As you have suggested, if worst come to the worst, I can plump for EMGs.. a known constant.

I'll let you into a secret.. that wasn't actually electro-luminescent wire ;o) - It was my awesome camera skills.. a slow shutter speed and a blue pen torch. I was actually stood in front of the camera too!

  12.
I'm happy for you that you've found soemthing that words. It's what we're all looking for.
Cheers Joe! YEP, I'm pretty happy - infact, as this is my 3rd bass.. I could just about get away with not visiting to check on it at all and know what I am getting... not that I could do that, of course! I'd wanna get involved lol
That is a nice spec Dan!

Just one question about your choice of p'ups: The Delanos, previously you've very much been an EMG active person, having tried them at Bassday, I think that the Delanos are quite different (unless they're making an active one I've missed).

I'd hate to think it was just that they are the current fashion and Nordstrand are now out of favour? :)
I appreciate your comments! I must admit, I am throwing it out there a bit, based on the sound of the clip I have heard. I am an EMGer, defintely.. so I hope I am not making too much of a wrong turn!! I like the tone of the Delanos! I'm having a 3 band EQ installed if there needs to be any tweaking involved!
i feel another epic build diary is on the way
lol.. I don't think this one will accrue the 950 replies an 29000 views of the 'Doodle' thread!!! You guys helped make my 7 string!!!

I have had some more discussions with Jon, just fine tuning the spec. I am really looking forward to this build. To have 2 workhorse basses that are nicely matched will be 'spot on'.

Any other basses will stay 'at home' .. poor things! They'll feel neglected!

  13.
haha +1 for that,

Heres me playing mine at a gig earlier in the year
I gave the Ashbury a bit of abuse at last year's BassBash. G-77 kindly let me put the vid on my MySpace page. Check it out.. ( Unfortunately you can't really hear the li'l fella, as there was a great deal of other bass noises in the room at the time!)

  14. The Hartke transporter cabinets have a lower 'sensitivity' than a lot of other paper coned cabinets. This as a result *could* make the cabinet sound quieter than another with the same amp settings, if the other has a higher sensitivity reading.

    Lifted from another site:-
Sensitivity ratings are given in decibels per watt at one meter, or db/Wm. So, with an input of one watt (usually white noise), a speaker with a sensitivity of 90 db/Wm will produce 90 decibels of sound at a distance of one meter.
