Is it because all their previous gear was so ghastly overpriced that with all the profit they have made, they can finally afford to seel an amp at a reasonable price??? lol lol lol
"Sexism is hilarous, isn't it. Oh, and racism, always good for a giggle. Don't forget taking the micky out of people with disablilities too! What harm can it do eh, its only fun and games?
No bloody wonder some of the female posters left this forum for dust" - Wil
Or maybe they got bored of all the middle-of-the-road, overly-sensitive "right on" crap that some people post?
No, I can tell you as a moderator that yes infact they did leave because of the sexist and chauvanistic posts that were appearing on the forums. Whilst on the subject, there are very few, and I quote "overly-sensitive "right on" crap" posts on this forum at all. -
She looks a bit ropey to me.
I'd still f*ck her, but that's really not saying much.
You're so coarse! Ever thought of rephrasing stuff in your head before you type? I'm guessing I know the answer already.
Tal is a talented player certainly. A good musician who deserves to go far I think. -
seems a of of people really favour the bridge pickup on jazz basses...
i only ever use the neck on mine...not blend of the back at all - i find the bridge far too nasal.
hmmm...
My basses are switched so you *can't* have the bridge pup on alone. So, Neck only or both are my options. No panning required either. My Shuker has such a strong tone, I don't worry about it... Even sounds great with a flat EQ. -

Who is this blithering idiot lol. My guitarist's sister was just messing about with her Camera and we felt inspired. She had the torch, guitarist had a laser pointer. I just sat and played ;o) -

I've got the 7-string version of this and it's pretty nice - I'm sure you could make use of those extra 2 frets for tapping as well
Also I'd suggest keeping the high F, C, G and D on there and tuning them all up half a step (or just play a tone down - you would have 26 frets after all) rather than using guitar strings, but I wouldn't really know where to begin if I was gonna do something like this so I'm sure you know best
^^^^ is a better idea. Theory being that *if* you could get a light enough gauge bass string, you could tune those 4 bass strings, F C G D up a tone. Have a chat with ARGH to find out what his gauges are on his 9 string tuning. I believe his Bb string is a .0018 (ish) -
Off the top of my head, you'd need a new nut cut, a custom bridge to take the 4 guitar strings (as a bass bridge's string mount holes will be too large) and may also need tuners that are suitable for guitar strings, if said bass doesn't come with keys like the Gotoh GB707/ Hipshots for example. As you have said, you'd be looking at a decent set up too. I'd recommend finding a bass with 2 truss rods, as you'd be able to set up either side of the neck for the amount of relief required for the massively different gauges. oooh.. there's a good point..
I wonder what the effect of having very high tension on one side of the neck and much less (guitar strings) on the other? I'd hazard a guess that it probably won't be too healthy unless it has the same amount of strengthening as my 7 string custom lol!!
You can buy 8 string basses on the cheap from ebay by Galveston.. can't tell you what sort of quality they are, but I'd make a guesstimate considering they are eight stringers for less than 500 quid.
I think you are asking for quite a specialist bit of kit and a custom build isn't out of the question... but, unfortunately you suggest the budget is. EEK! -
Also, if an active bass goes into a pedal (like an aphex bass xciter, or hartke vxl) is it still classed as active, or could the signal then go into the low gain/passive input on an amp?
Again, this would depend on the level of the output signal. Potentially the output of these pedals could be on the hot side, so I think as a starter, try the active / attenuated input. -
Hi.. well in short.. no you don't *have* to use those inputs specifically high for passive, low for active etc. As it happens, I have owned active basses whose outputs are quieter than that of a passive bass.
Herein lies the clue. - Basically, if a bass has a very highout put and constantly clips the preamp into distortion, use the attenuated input instead to clean up the sound. If you have to wind the gain up quite high to even get it to slightly clip, then use the non attenuated input.
(some amps don't have seperate inputs, but have a switch to change between the low/hi modes)
Now.. you may WANT to overdrive the preamp, in the case of a valve amp for example.. in which case, a higher output bass into a non attenuated input will help you get the drive you need.
ok.. So that seems logical.. well.. enter amps like the Ampeg SVT. The input path on my Ampeg preamp looks like this:-
o- input - pad switch - first valve - peak light sensing - gain control - second valve EQ circuit ... etc etc..
You can, using a hot signalled bass with no attenuation to distort the first valve in the circuit, with the input gain turned all the way down! The peak LED will be going nuts, but you wont hear a thing!
My point is, its a good idea to understand the amp you are using to know where the signal is hot!
Another example, using my Ampeg again, I can stop the input gain light from coming on with a low input, but add so much boost in the EQ, that the peak LED for the EQ flashes instead! - A different sounding drive and dirt available there too.
In short, trust your ears.. Some love the sound of an overdriving preamp. -
Hopefully it'll only be a string.. nice n' cheap.. as opposed to getting a nut sorted etc..
-
Pretty sure its not the tuners. It almost sounds as if there's something wrong with the string itself. Almost as if the core is detached from the winding. Not sure if this is possible though??
yup, had strings with loose wraps before. Though mine made the string sound dull and sort of 'fuzzy' when played hard. Defintely sounded like another note was straining to get out at the same time.
Also check the grooves in the nut aren't too big. I used to have a bass that I couldnt use a certain brand of string on, as the'r gauges (although saying 85 for example) were smaller than other brands. The string would make a rattling sound.. but it didn't sound as if it were coming from the nut!! Must have been something to do with the resonance of the wood I guess.
Failing that.. it's tinnitus lol -
Sorry Dood - Steve said you'd be gutted.
right thats it! I am deleting his mobile number off my phone!!! AND off my xmas list lol lol!!!!!!
don't worry steve I still luv ya.
He's right though!! - Although, further to our last discussion about rigs, I have set up my rig thus:- (pics to follow)
Bass> Multicomp - = Stereo EQ = TC Electronic GForce - Powersoft Power Amp - Epifani UL610
> ------------
SO, I have a compressed and a non compressed signal going into either side of a dual channel EQ. Both EQ'd signals are fed into the left and right of the GFroce where they are mixed with different effects etc. THe GForce has a dedicated line driver with enough gain to drive my poweramp. The mono signal (at the moment) goes straight out to my cab, but could go to a stereo DI box first.
Think that is as close as I will get to the EBS tone for now. I am even surprised at myself..as the SVP is OUT of the rack AGAIN!!! -
Thanks a lot fellas - I really appreciate the kind comments. I honestly feel like I've arrived rig-wise. It's all a bit heavier than I'm used to but I can manage lifting the cab in and out of the car on my own. The pain is worth it for the sonic benefits.
NO CHUFFIN WAY!!!!!!!!! Can't believe you managed to wangle the EBS out of Flanker!! gutted mate!!!! Thats one preamp I'd love to own..
oh well.. I guess if there is even the slightest chance you change your mind.. you know where I am!!!!! I would sell gear if one of those came up second hand. I don't think they are worth the new price.. but they are stunningly good!!!!
Congrats mate.. I have played through Flanker's EBS/QSC/Epifani combo at a bass bash and it was stunning. -
Think you all know what I am going to say lol.. I bang on about them all the time!
(4.5XL is audio sex) -

Heh heh... There's still a lot of love in that one... I so nearly parted with it!!
It must have a blend with the clean signal, but other than that I'm open to suggestions.
ta muchly!
MXR M80 allows you to mix a dirty tone with a clean tone. Great little pedal! -
If you're talking about the width at the nut, a C is 1-3/4" (50s and 60s Precision), a B is 1-5/8" (special order 60s Precision, became the norm around early 70s), and an A is 1-1/2" (Jazz, special order Precision).
Ahh that must be it! Thanks. I haven't measured the two, but they are practically the same on my P and my J. Which is good.. Very comfy! -
A few years ago I was leaving a gig at the Astoria in London and saw a large crowd of people surrounding a couple of people who were having sex on some stairs leading into a building. It was about 11.00pm. I suppose a lot of people thought that this was particularly impressive, but it's not really something I want to see in public.
P
Were they doing it really fast, up and down the pavement in all manner of styles with the finesse of a couple of porn stars? -
a question: Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the skinnier Precision necks that feel like Jazz ones are 'A' style? My CIJ P neck feels very close to the skinniness (is that even a word? lol) of my Fender Jazz neck. It is described as an 'A' neck profile.
Alot of people, including myself, go weak at the knees for a TV logo
lol.. yes.. ok mine isn't an original 70's P.. but part of my buying criteria was to have the authentic looking TV logo!! daft! -
I have a fascination with Vintage Fenders, but in the same way as elephants, very nice to look at but you wouldn't want to own one. I tend to regard a bass as a tool, a thing to do a job with, and I wouldn't be happy gigging with a pristine vintage Fender-I haven't been able to keep my '07 P in perfect condition despite the utmost care. It's picked up three or four minor dings and a bit of scratching on the back, and I've been ridiculously anal about looking after it. It'll soon reach the stage where I don't care any more and really start knocking it about. I'd hate to do that to an old one which are almost becoming bits of history now. I prefer to have a modern one where a bit of abuse isn't such a big deal-I'd hate to have a lovely pristine vintage bass which had survived 40 years intact, only to be knocked around and damaged by my cack-handedness. A similar situation exists with vintage flying jackets, a hobby I've been involved in for ten years now-many people are reluctant to wear 60-year-old WWII jackets on a regular basis, so the reproduction industry has evolved as people look for a repro that has the flavour of the old jackets without having to damage a historic original.
In terms of value I think Fender have a bit of the Harley-Davidson thing going-it either does it for you or it doesn't. If it doesn't you won't understand why people are daft enough to pay that sort of money, if it does no explanation is necessary. There are better ones out there that do the job far better for a lot less money, but they just aren't the same thing.
Excellent post a +1 here. You did a better job of explaining what I wanted to say! -
What you won't know is that Nigel is also a wonderful player with his fingers, and also played in a full on rock band for a while with ex members of Thin Lizzy, so he does have many strings to his bow.
ah, you got in there before me ;o) -
Nigel thankfully doesn't just rattle away in 'musical masterbation mode'. This is just a vid clip of some bass acrobatics. It obviously doesn't make for a musical bass line..
oh except for 1.10 - 1.40 ;o) -
So yeah, forget the number of strings discussion.. but it's nice to see so many bass players doin' their thang on stage. Enjoyable video, despite not really understanding what the compere was on about lol!!!
Didn't really see anything 'new' being tackled though.. pretty much the same slap and tap moves the way through. Not really a criticism, more that that I am panging to see someone do something a bit different.. like lay the bass down and play it with their.....
nose. -
He's a Rotosound endorser and provided all the funky bass bits on their site ;o)

I'm in love!

There are loads of them in every off-topic thread!
Look at this one for example. A light hearted thread and a bit of banter and then someone thows their toys out of the pram in mock indignation.
Its like Old Horse Murphy says, this forum really needs to lighten up a bit.
If someone tells a joke and 100 people laugh and 1 person is offended, who's the one with the problem?
I'm not going to argue with you. No one was in 'mock indignation'. I am telling you what the reason was for some of our female registered posters not wishing to come onto this forum anymore.
We can all have a laugh, sure, but be respectful to those on the forum at the same time. Why should a user feel unwelcome due to a minority who are spoiling it? 100 people can share a joke but it only takes 1 to take it too far.
