ta muchly!
MXR M80 allows you to mix a dirty tone with a clean tone. Great little pedal!

  2.
If you're talking about the width at the nut, a C is 1-3/4" (50s and 60s Precision), a B is 1-5/8" (special order 60s Precision, became the norm around early 70s), and an A is 1-1/2" (Jazz, special order Precision).
Ahh that must be it! Thanks. I haven't measured the two, but they are practically the same on my P and my J. Which is good.. Very comfy!

  3.
A few years ago I was leaving a gig at the Astoria in London and saw a large crowd of people surrounding a couple of people who were having sex on some stairs leading into a building. It was about 11.00pm. I suppose a lot of people thought that this was particularly impressive, but it's not really something I want to see in public.
    P
Were they doing it really fast, up and down the pavement in all manner of styles with the finesse of a couple of porn stars?

  4. a question: Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the skinnier Precision necks that feel like Jazz ones are 'A' style? My CIJ P neck feels very close to the skinniness (is that even a word? lol) of my Fender Jazz neck. It is described as an 'A' neck profile.
Alot of people, including myself, go weak at the knees for a TV logo
lol.. yes.. ok mine isn't an original 70's P.. but part of my buying criteria was to have the authentic looking TV logo!! daft!

  5.
I have a fascination with Vintage Fenders, but in the same way as elephants, very nice to look at but you wouldn't want to own one. I tend to regard a bass as a tool, a thing to do a job with, and I wouldn't be happy gigging with a pristine vintage Fender-I haven't been able to keep my '07 P in perfect condition despite the utmost care. It's picked up three or four minor dings and a bit of scratching on the back, and I've been ridiculously anal about looking after it. It'll soon reach the stage where I don't care any more and really start knocking it about. I'd hate to do that to an old one which are almost becoming bits of history now. I prefer to have a modern one where a bit of abuse isn't such a big deal-I'd hate to have a lovely pristine vintage bass which had survived 40 years intact, only to be knocked around and damaged by my cack-handedness. A similar situation exists with vintage flying jackets, a hobby I've been involved in for ten years now-many people are reluctant to wear 60-year-old WWII jackets on a regular basis, so the reproduction industry has evolved as people look for a repro that has the flavour of the old jackets without having to damage a historic original.
In terms of value I think Fender have a bit of the Harley-Davidson thing going-it either does it for you or it doesn't. If it doesn't you won't understand why people are daft enough to pay that sort of money, if it does no explanation is necessary. There are better ones out there that do the job far better for a lot less money, but they just aren't the same thing.
Excellent post a +1 here. You did a better job of explaining what I wanted to say!

  6. So yeah, forget the number of strings discussion.. but it's nice to see so many bass players doin' their thang on stage. Enjoyable video, despite not really understanding what the compere was on about lol!!!

Didn't really see anything 'new' being tackled though.. pretty much the same slap and tap moves the way through. Not really a criticism, more that that I am panging to see someone do something a bit different.. like lay the bass down and play it with their.....

    nose.

  7.
A reminder of your days on tour with Sam Fox in the 80s perchance?
HA HA HA HA!!!!! You thought of that song... not me! ;o) However, yes.. if she stood far enough forward I could get a good swing at the back on her head with a few pounds of Ash.

  8.
OK, I'm planning on doing a shuker build, so I want to know what you think of my idea.
Congrats.. the spec sounds very good ;o)
I've never played a single cut before, I just want one because they look cool. Do they change the sound and do they feel different to play than a double cut?
Yep, they are very cool.. although they seem to prevoke a Marmite reaction lol.. but mebbe thats a good thing.. better than going unnoticed!
Do they change the sound? well as it has been debated to death.. I still don't think the extra bit of wood will make the slightest bit of difference to tone. I think the differences between two lumps of body Ash will have a greater effect on the tone of the instrument than the additional upper horm block.

However, I do think my SC feels different to how my double cut Shuker did. You don't have an upper horn digging in to your chest! - You might wanna check that you are happy with the heel shape too, if like me, you like to play north of the border/ up the dusty end.

Some have suggested that the extra wood attached to the neck on a neck thru SC makes for a stronger body/neck join. Can't argue with that really.
What sorts of 2 band EQ would you reccomend that shuker will stock? I don't know anything about electrics, so say what you like.
Thats an easy one! I highly recommend Shuker's own preamp. He has a modular system that allows you to tailor to your needs. 2 band / 3 band / switching options etc. I understand Jon has some tech-boffin-geekaloids who help him with the product and it is ace!

You could also check out Seymour Duncan . Aguilar / Bartolini and EMG for their own preamps.
Also, I like the tone I get from my dad's stingray. Will I be able to get a similar sound from this build? Are there any pickups that are better at impersonating a stingray stock pickup than the duncan?
All down to opinion my friend! The Seymour is a fave, but you have soooo many options. Flea liked a Lane Poor (MM style) pup in his Modulus (IIRC) - I have also heard very good things about Delano too, who do a MM pup as well. By coincidence, Jon Shuker is now an official outlet for Delano pups.. so guess whats going in my Shuker? lol!!

I can almost hear the tone that your spec suggests. Mmmmm... nice!!!

I'm sure you have had a listen to the basses on Jon's site? http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/sound.htm

The first bass hass Delano dual rail pups .. also look at the second to last bass, with an MM pup on, which I understand is still owned by our very own 'Dr.Dave' who maybe willing to descrscibe the tone a bit more.

  9. Look out.. Dood is posting his '67 alike ;o)

I agree with the OP, I am unlikely to buy a bass for investment value.. I just wanna play it ;o) - well.. in the case of this one ^^^ i certainly wouldn't pay 2k for it when it hangs on my wall lol!

(It's a very good example of a non-export CIJ - I love the TV era script and the pups aint bad either.)

  10. I used to use the top off a sports sock! lol. I cut the sock off just below the 'toweling' bit then stitched a hair band into the end using probably the strongest thread I have ever found! mental stuff. I then attached the 'pouch' the same was as the sweatband method above.

Yes.. I can use a sewing machine.. stop laughing.. :oD

  11.
Are we going a little OT here? - The Epifani 6x10 cab weighs in at 92lbs - a lightweight cab???

    Hamster
Sorry Hamster! Totally missed your post! - Blimey! Quite a while ago too! My UL-610 weighs 35Kg, so in comparison to the likes of the Hartke 4.5XL (4x10) and the Ampeg 4x10's that weigh in at around 45Kg+ , I think with my 6x10 being over a thrid larger and 10Kg lighter, it's safe to go in the lightweight category lol. A child can lift it.. honestly ;o)

  12.
Thanks Timmy, I've been offered two of them already :)
I'd toyed earlier this year with the idea of getting a rack channel strip and use that as a preamp. I'd have to see if my post is still here (or it may have been on BassTalk - bad memory!!) - There's a few guys on here who use one. I have to admit that your thread has had me pulling my rack apart yet again. I really have a problem! I wish I could just be happy with what I have!!

I wonder if my issue is that I am yet to find an amp that does exactly what I need! One of these days I will sit down and build one myself through frustration!!!

Anyway, back to the rack strips.. I liked the spec of the ART Pro Channel and similar units, but I think I'd want a 1u. To Include a compressor and a decent EQ section/ parametric. I found this link with some info on, just a moment ago: http://www.digitalprosound.com/2001/08_aug...ip/ch_strip.htm

  13.
Getting a bit clearer thanks. I did have a plan to buy a decent preamp at a later stage but can't really justify the outlay at the moment when I'm buying a power amp & cabs too.
I can't see the Yammy being a bad choice to be honest. I guess it doesn't hurt to have the extra headroom of say the P7500.. and it's still not an expensive amp, especially if you purchased from soundslive.co.uk - I think they are one of the cheapest (well actually.. it was when I'd bought mine.. mebbe there are other outlets doing great prices too!)

  14. Oh and my top tip for the Yamaha P series poweramps, for bass guitar:-

*Turn on the High Pass Filter on both channels.
*Wind the frequency control all the way down to minimum (25Hz)

There's no point trying to get the cab to produce frequencies it can't and this serious guards against speaker farting and over excursion due to excessive bass frequencies. I can't comment on how effective it is on other poweramps.. but this is a tried and tested method. You won't hear any difference in bottom end either, only less flapping about ;o)
