1. May seem like something of little consequence, but if you choose a 1x15 to go with your 4x10, see if you can find out if the sensitivities of the cabs are similar.

I used to own a 4x10 and a 1x15, but the 4x10 was such a louder cab in comparison that adding the 1x15 was completely pointless. The 4x10 sounded deeper, louder, clearer and more punchy. However, adding a 4x10 exactly the same turned the rig into an absolute monster!

I sold the 1x15 very quickly.

I'd therefore vote for a matching 4x10. Ultimately, I reckon it'll sound better than the addition of a 1x15. fours10's move more air than 1x15 ;o)

  2. I think its the browser that decides font sizes.. If its any consellation, Mine is ok. Can you change your 'zoom' on your browser in the same way IE does.. If you have a scroll mouse, you can hold down CTRL and scroll up and down to change your page sizes there. Kinda like a zoom thing ;o)

  3.
I don't play ERB (5 string doesn't count) but for my money why go higher - you're just getting into other instruments registers.

The unique thing about the bass is it's lower registry, no one wants bassists playing all widdly up high, IMO the lower the better.
Interesting points you make there Gilmour. I guess with respect to ERB, I would ask why a piano player has to play in the range of the guitarist? Maybe the horn section should lose the trombones? I feel sorry for the string section too.. they'd be out of a job ;o) ERB is just another wide range voice I think. In that respect, ERB can be considered a full range instrument, in the same way as a Piano could. You could then differentiate between 'normal bass' and 'ERB' in to sperate roles.. if you really wanted to..

As for the highlighted quote, thats a 'touch paper' I am gonna walk away from as you light it lol ;o) - only joshin ;o)

  4.
Hi, during my jazz band rehearsals there are often times when the rhythm section has to be silent while the blowers go over a section. I would like to be able to play during these times, listening to myself through headphones. There is a mute button on the back of the cabinet (Gallien-Krueger MB150S) but it is not convenient and I would like to mute the speaker using a foot switch. Can anybody suggest a piece of kit or a modification which will accomplish this? Thanks.

    Martin
Maybe you could rig up a little mixer and earphones, connected to your amp, mebbe if you have a tuner output?. Does your amp have a mute switch that could silence it?

For example, my Ampeg preamp has a tuner output that is always live, even when you switch the mute footswitch. Ideal for connecting up some sort of monitor system.

p.s. you can pick up mixers really cheap these days.. Bothe Behringer and Phonic do a little 5 channel on for around 30 quid I think.

  5.
Sorry if it sounded harsh - I was thinking out loud and in a rush between work and bitter disappointment watching the footy down the (empty) pub (but thats another subject :) )

It seems to me that all this higher/lower stuff is just trying to do something new or different cos everthing has been done before. Their Satanic Majesties invented death metal and no one has done it better (imho).
It's alright chap, don' wurry. ;o)

Yeh, I agree with that.. Any boundary pushing is trying to do something new and different, cos, as you say, it has all been done before in one way or another. With a gazzilion and one bands out there all using essentially the same technologies, (Guitar,Bass Drums etc) something has to change to create those new sounds we all crave.

  6.
Do you know anyone in the UK making an .018 or higher in the UK?
\Well, the afore mentioned Warwick do .015 up. but not smaller. Have a chat with the top guys at NewTone strings, I reckon they maybe able to russle something up for you. Tell 'em I sent ya ;o)

  7.
What is progressive about playing metal an octave down? I said as much about the Death Metal that ARGH posted - metal riffs just down an octave.
Nooo John.No.

I like to play Progressive Metal/Rock that just happens to use lower tunings. I didn't say that progressive = down tuned.

Its a distinct possibility that as most progressive music writers like to explore beyond the pigeon hole boundaries, that alternative tunings are more prevalent in this genre than others.

  8.
How much use does the low string get
How long is a piece of string? I use it when I need it I guess.. much the same as the B, the E etc etc
and how defined are the notes..
That would depend on a whole load of factors! If you are playing a cardboard bass with guitar pickups into a practice amp, I suspect you wont get much at all from the string.. even worse if it is a dead string.

I think my gear is adequate to reproduce a low F# at a strong enough volume to be heard ;o)

  9. Oooh what about that fine Jauquo III-X chap (ermm is that how you spell his name?) His bass is described as a 'sub contra bass'. I think his 4 strings are tuned low C# F# B E

http://www.jauqoiii-x.com/JK_pages/JK_music_lowc_review.html Think I have chatted to him via email at some point.. mebbe on TalkBass.. I forget.. nice chap.

  10. We need to meet up mate 'o)

My personal choice was that I am really into progressive metal, where as you are probably aware, the guitar tunings are getting lower and lower, thus the bass is going doooooooown too!

I just really like the sound of it! - My mate, Rueban, a very talented keyboard player used to show off his 'sub' patches on his Triton with our big PA.. I always panged to get that low on my bass .. so it was only a matter of time before I joined a band that pens in those low notes especially for me!!

I also found that whilst I had the high F string on my Bill Dickens Sig bass, it really wasnt geting used as much as I expected.

yup, thats it.. just a bit more to the tonal pallete!

  11. Just trying to find a comparison guide on the Phillips Jan 5814a and 6189W - they are both 12AU7.ECC82 and one is practically double the price of the other.. can't seem to see why at the mo. I *think* it is to do with the availability of these NOS valves.. ie, there's loads of one and little of the other.

I suspect, as they both have JAN status, that there's probably little to choose between them.

  12. I'm sure one of our techies will chime in, but I think with the limitations of bass/pa gear and the laws of physics/biology, you are unlikely to ever hear that note, but your brain will fill in the missing information using all of the related overtones, which you can hear.

For example, If I play a low F# it really makes diddly squat difference to what I hear if I have a 25Hz filter on or not.. It just stops my cab's speakers from flapping around as they are not capable of producing those frequencies with any sort of power.

  13.
Well, Larry alledgedely has his telephone number in the comics.. ring him and ask ! I'd love to know if it actually is his number!
It certainly is his number! True story, Larry Hartke left a message on my MySpace to call him! He is a very busy man, but yeah.. definitely him. (On that number)

Oh.. and instead of going to Thomann, you maybe able to get a new driver replacement straight from Hartke's UK distributor.

Could possibly be Samson.. but It may even be Headline Distribution. Sound Control used to handle Hartke gear, so a nice chat with them may get the results you need.

  14. Yes, very true!! I would love to have a stack of valves to try. I think it'd be a fun experiment. Especially hearing the famed Mullards in a double blind test. I already know what valves I like to upgrade too from cheap stock ones.. but, it'd be good to hear HOW MUCH BETTER the best really are!

  15.
Small World :) I was chatting with Burke Shelly, Budgie bass player, last night and he was struggling to play my Shuker P5 a few weeks ago "I know how to work a Precision" he said then "er, it's got 5 strings ... and can I make the strap shorter?" (He's about 5' 3" )
He did a fine job on it though ..
Sadly no pixie dust was passed on so I'm still a numpty whilst he is still superb:
"Bass player/vocalist Burke Shelley is one of the truly great but underrated singers to emerge in the 70s. His delivery throughout this album is faultless and his bass playing is magnificent."
t'is a small world!!!!
I've read quite a few comments saying "you can't use an ERB in a band context" "people only use them for tapping/showing off" "you don't see an ERB at your local open mic night" etc.
I actually can't think of a reply to people who make such comments as they are so ridiculous.

  16. I own an original 80's Fender Power Jazz Bass Special and the stock models do not feature piezos. I am not familiar with any newer versions that do.

However, the bridge pup on mine is awesome, even with the now rather 'long in the tooth' onboard electronics. I have no need for a 4 string, but i LOVE this bass. I wanted one as soon as I knew I wanted to play Bass. Took me over 17 years to finally buy one, but they are a steal on ebay these days.

Anyway, back to the point.. piezos can be useful for a good natural sound, but to be honest with you, I can get far clearer ringing harmonics from standard magnetic pups over and above that of my bass with piezos alone. I guess this could vary from bass to bass. My 7er with EMGs can sound clear harmonics right up to the 2nd fret.. mebbe there's a bit of technique involved in there too though.

  17. Has been said already- there's one pet peeve of mine.. and thats heel blocks. Big lumps of wood that get in the way for attaching necks to bodies. Completely unnecessary in these modern times of guitar construction! HE HE HE!!!!

    So, I'm a neckthru'er if thats a useable description!
