1. 'one of those loose terms'

In it's simplest terms it's using more than one mic to record a source. How that is carried out is open to a zillion options from 'MS' to 'boundary recording' or recording from the front and rear of the speaker (in the case of open back cabinets or some custom closed backs like the Peavey guitar range that feature a Mic inside the cabinet). Using 2 different types of Mic's on one cone for example can open up some tonal possibilities when they are mixed together especially if they are switched out of phase. The MS technique (- there are plenty of audio forums that can describe with pictures better than I can here to explain) uses mics at a tangent to each other and then mixed phase to create a fuller sound. (I hope I described that ok!!)

You could also have 2 mics on one source that are a small distance apart to pick up differences in tones from that source.. for example, a mic facing an acoustic guitar bridge and one pointing the sound hole. 2 completely different source tones.

If it's pickups you are refering to, in an electric bass, a large percentage of the tone comes from the electronics/ pups. More so than the woods used. What I mean is that you can make a more noticeable difference to the voice of a bass by changing its electronics than you can by changing the wood alone.

    Sounds unlikely doesn't it?

  3. Hey Luke!

Yes.. to be honest, having played with my Epifani cab, I even reckon the Techs have the edge.. especially with the top end. They aren't cheap, but they certainly aren't the ridiculous boutique prices of *the competitors*. I loved the Tech cabs loads! Very PA like and light as a feather!

Thomas! Its not toooo late! I will accept an endorsement deal from you! lol

  4. I like the look of the Sandberg 5. I have played a couple of 'bergs but not enough of the others to make a choice really. If you fancy something 'not the usual' as you have mentioned, here's a disgusting plug for a bass I have up for sale.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18 .. I have a chap coming over next week to check the bass out. If for any reason it's not for him it will be available.

If a 6er is a bit too much.. at least take a look at Shukerguitars.co.uk anyway .. disclaimer: or any of the other fine Luthiers we have in the UK that carry stock.

On a side note, I was listening to the MP3 samples on Ped's website . He has a Japanese made Baccus 24 and a Bossa Jazz bass. They sounded sooooo nice! Mebbe another 2 to add to your list?

  5. I was watching the video demos for the XT Pro last night and ended up being swayed to contact our Ped about the rack unit. I think I wanna give one a go, having owned a Behringer Vamp in the past.

  6. For £200 (including posatge) a multiFX unit that I would recommend whole heartedly would be this one http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2876 . It will take a little time to figure out how to use it properly.. but TC are easily a market leader in rack FX. I've owned a TC rack for years.

  7. Excellent, definitely food for thought there. Flanker owns an EBS Classic preamp and thats *really* what I am after. It sounded amazing at the last BassBash.. interestingly It was that and has Epifani cab that started a bought of GAS.. if only I could talk him into selling!!! The Galleries 800+ for a preamp is just a little too hard to swallow. That really is pushing what I think a *bass preamp* should cost. They do sound good though. It'd be cheaper to buy a TD650 second hand too! - I'd thought about that option, but giving up my poweramp is as painful as giving up one of my basses right now!

My other alternative, that I am doing right now is building up a preamp out of modular parts. A pedal here, a DI box there, a rack EQ and line driver stage. Eventually either fitting it all in my rack or something similar. I'd prefer to have it all in one box, like a rack preamp, but I haven't found anything to tick ALL the boxes in a decent price range.

Going way off topic, I had a look at the Phil Jones Bass preamp. That looks really well spec'd, but again the price is prohibitive. I can't help remembering the torrent of abuse 'he' gave a BassWorlder as well for no reason which taints my view a bit.

Its ok chill mate! ;o) That's why I'd asked for you to qualify what you were describing. I didn't really understand what you were getting at, so made the assumption that someone without FX experience at all would be completely lost.

To a point I think you are correct too. Cheapy multifx tend not to have decent overdrives lol .. wasps in jamjars come to mind!

  9. With that in mind, I think thats why I had an almost unconcious decision to make my 7 string as unseeable as possible. Ok, the personalisations on it could be removed at cost, but the point was that the bass would be 'right' for me as a custom build and that I would have no reason to want to sell it.

On the flipside, my Elite 6 doesn't feature any personalisations at all and would attract buyers as it covers (scuse the pun) many more bases than the 7 string. The 'dimensions' are more familiar and traditional.

I am not so sure about re-sell value on custom builds being vague. I think you'd apply the same decisions to one of those as an off the shelf model. For example "what was the cost new", "What do they cost now to buy", "condition" etc. There does appear to be a perception in some cases that just because a company is less well known, their prices should be lower as if they are not as good as the more well known company. I'm not just refering to musical instruments either, it applies across the board.

  10.
Singles are limited but give a better quality sound
I'd have to totally disagree with you on that one. Certainly if you buy a cheap and cheerful multifx, then you may be presented with some poor effects. However most midrange multifx are equally as good quality as seperate pedals. Spend some more cash and I reckon the processor wil be every bit as good as 'singles'. In some case far better, due to the improved signal route.
Had multi effects and they are very good but they give a "taste" of the real thing.
I don't quite follow what you mean. I can assume that you are refering to boutique pedal sounds that may not be included in mulitFX?

Having said that, a lot of units, such as mine allow you to model effects using 'building blocks'. VCOs / VCAs / Envelope controllers and Pitch sensitive controllers can be added to chains of effects parameters to make some really bizarre and wierd noises!

  11. My take on the subject is not meant to upset the pedal users amongst us, but for me, instead of buying piles of pedals, i'd rather use that money to buy the best effects rack I could.

There is, as you have pointed out, benefits and disadvantages. One being that, yes you should spend a bit of time learning how to use the unit to its full potential. There's stuff that a rack / mulitFX unit can do that pedals just cant. ever. However, if you like the modular approach and only want to take a specific effect out of the house with you, then you are saving space, time and effort. Obviously, there are lots of boutique pedals out there, that *may* have sounds that aren't availanble on cheaper effects units. You have also pointed out that single pedals are easier to use. True. My preference is also to keep all the expensive stuff all racked up away from the floor. I therefore have just a controller sat on the front of the stage to get covered in beer, by exciteable gig goers. Another reason I wouldn't want to put my ten beloved pedals on the floor. Another plus for pedals.. if one blows up completely..well you just disconnect it.. if my rack dies, I lose all my effects. That hasnt happened yet, thankfully!!! You can also buy single pedals one at a time which is obviously cheaper in the short run thansaving up for a full rack.. but I suspect if you had bought ten pedals, the rack equivalent price would buy you a monster FX unit.

So thats a brief pile of thoughts. There are reasons to and not to in my opinion.

Could I chime in and say that now my V-Type is out of my rack I have 2K RMS in 2u. Is that too much?

The ASB-5 is the same size as the EMGs. The ASB2-5 you mention is narrower.
