I bought an Ashdown combo Fri night. Recieved a confirmation email and nothing. Sent an email yesterday morning which bounced back, phoned and was told they would call be back in 30 mins. That was 23 hours ago....

Anyone actually recieved their order or any further correspondence?

    Thanks in adv

I had success, but then I only ordered a used distortion pedal that I collected from Birmingham PMT on Saturday, and a Black Rat hard case, which arrived yesterday.

Looks like they rather messed this up though. With so much of the listed sale stock being secondhand/B stock their website really should have been up to the task of real time updates with so many ‘one in stock’ items. The lack of this has no doubt caused them a headache and annoyed punters in the process.

  2. Had an Ashdown ABM 414T (4ohm 4x10) a good few years back now and man, that was absolutely exquisite.

Glass back means I can only do lightweight now, and I must say that my Barefaced Two10 is on a par as my favourite ever cab. Crazy power and superb articulation for such little weight.

  3. I think a fully ‘nice clean tone’ doesn’t really completely happen with octave up effects ever in my experience.

That said, I’ve tried a few, largely as I’m in a bass/drums duo where I’m doing a dual channel thing with one being an octave up with distortion. As a result I don’t use the effect clean much, but when I’ve experimented I’ve found the T-Rex Quint Machine to have the better, more natural clean octave up sound of those I’ve tried. It’s a very capable pedal generally as it does a fifth above and octave down too.

I’ve also tried the octave up on the Digitech Ricochet (very artificial so wouldn’t recommend if ‘natural’ is your thing, though actually I generally use it for 2 octave up stabs and that’ll always sound synthetic!). Also had the mkii Mooer Tender Octaver for a while. The mkii is still similar to a POG in terms of its octave up sound but still comes some way behind the Quint. YMMV though.

Have heard the TC Sub n Up get some decent props too though haven’t tried one. Yet...

Been reading this topic after finding it on Google and found it very helpful so thanks all!

I recently tried an older Squire Bass VI in Canterbury (without the control plate) and loved it, after pining for a Bass VI for a while it has cemented my decision to get one. But now reading about the alternatives on here my decision is being made a little harder..

@Low End Bee how are you finding your Burns London Bass VI? They're going for a pretty good price on Andertons but without being able to get down to try one any time soon any opinions you have would be great!

@James Nada do you have any more thoughts on the Harley Benton? That price is amazing and I have heard good things about the build quality relative to the price but haven't spoken to anyone that has had the Bass VI for any real length of time.

@BigRedX Have you had a chance to compare the "old" and "new" squire Bass VI's? The one I tried felt good, but I don't know if it was the tighter string spacing as you mentioned or the newer one with more space. The one I tried was a full pick guard and didn't have a metal control plate compared to the ones I see for sale online now so I am assuming it is an older, tighter spaced one.

@Dosi Y'Anarchy How are you finding using the Gretsch as a Bass VI? I've been looking at the Gretsch or the Danelectro baritones and "converting" them by buying heavier gauge strings but again, haven't spoken to anyone that has done this over a serious length of time.

Thanks everyone for the great insight and for any tips you can give me!

Also, don’t discount the Revelation bass vi. They’re stupidly good for the price they can be picked up for (got mine used for about £220 from memory) and are a very capable starting place.

Many thanks, I don’t have much in the way of kit, I’m a ‘bass and amp’ player, but the idea of a mixer interests me.

There’s a Behringer one (MX400 I think it’s called) that’s a 4 channel mixer, so more than you need, but will sort this with aplomb for less than £20.

How did you manage to get it for 484!

Think mine came out at £469 delivered. The price was lower (started at £529 I think) when they had the restock initially and that dropped further and further over a period of a few days. Then I got lucky with a 5% discount voucher too.

  7. Have to say after all the horror stories I was relieved that my purchasing experience from order to delivery was Absolutely fine.

The bass? Well, I’m not sure if I’ve just been unlucky but it’s the second MIM PJ Mustang I’ve bought (12 mths or more apart) and both have had issues on delivery. On the first one (domestically purchased) the pickup selector connection was dodgy, and on this one the jack socket is faulty. Fortunately it’s something fairly minor thing so I’m fixing it myself rather than trying to utilise some/any after sales service from Bax and invoke the warranty. Seems way too much hassle given their location too.

Other than that issue I’m very happy with it. It’s lighter than my other PJ Mustang, presumably due to the different bridge and tuners. Will move to number one status in my current band once I’ve sorted the little issue out.

  8. Word of caution on those All Parts replacement bridges (checked them out a little while back myself). Likely not a gamechanger, but worthy of note.

    From their website -

    https://www.allparts.uk.com/products/danelectro-adjustable-bass-bridge

NB. The front two mounting holes match up with the longhorn bass bridge (BB-3810-010). However the rear mounting hole does not so adjustment to the body would need to be made if replacing the longhorn bass bridge with this one.

My 90's blueburst is actually a 'Pro' model ( upgraded metal bridge / tuners etc) but like yours has truss adjustment at the body end of the neck. Again, historically inaccurate but makes it more user friendly IMO. Had a few Longhorns and they've all been great, just some more great than others. 😀

Dang, I didn’t know the pro model was a thing. Have to say my preference would be for a ‘proper’ bridge and tuners. That said, the unconventional aspects of these basses is half the fun I guess. And I can’t complain as I picked mine up a few months back for just over £150.

  10. Also own a 90s reissue. As with previous payer find the pickups and wiring to be fine.

I did look around at pickups a little a while back out of curiosity more than anything. Not loads of options out there from what I saw. There’s a Kent Armstrong Hot Lips bass set, but from memory they’re J bass pickups in a lipstick cover. Think they’re what were used on the Lakland Scheff signature.

Current state of pedal mayhem at my feet in the rehearsal room. Signal gets split twice (Meatbox, DD7) and ends up in 3 rigs.

How you finding the Pessimiser on bass? I’m using a Hilbish Beta preamp and was considering adding one of these in at some point.
