Thanks for all the advice so far guys, really helps.

    Those musicmasters look pretty neat!

Tried the MIM P/J mustang but was disappointed, really crackly switch and the connection for the j pickup kept dropping out. Obviously a bit of a dud, i know a lot of people rate them.

I'll keep scouring the the internet for that elusive bargain :)

Common fault then possibly On those as mine had the exact same issue. GuitarGuitar fixes it under warranty for nowt just after purchase. Been perfect since.

Hey, no i played sitting down. Didn't even think of trying the bass while standing.

IMO you’re not getting a full comparison just playing seated. The different in scale feels more pronounced to me when standing and comfort/fatigue of your left arm may differ as a result.

if you’re moving from guitar then a shorty is an ideal mid-point in scale, and ultimately it was the market Fender had in mind when they first came out.

The suggestion above re: Squiers is a decent one, particularly the Vistas.

if you do prefer the feel of a Mustang in further consideration, have a look at the MIM Mustangs. P/J pickup configuration on them so you can get some sort of approximation of the P and J bass tone, or a blend of both. if you’re savvy these can be had secondhand for the £350-£400 mark.

Anyway, as primarily a P and Mustang player now, either are good safe bets for me. But I am kinda biased as, in their own way, both kinda feel like ‘home’.

  3. I play both a P and a Mustang.

First thing I’d ask is whether you’ve played both on a strap when testing? Standing up and feeling the difference in the scale length and the difference the extra ‘reach’ that playing a P will bring may direct you to your answer.

in terms of price, there’s a beauty of a Vintera Mustang on here, unless it’s sold in the last few days, for less than £500.

  4. Of the pedals you mention my experience is limited to the TC Mojomojo and the Joyo American Sound.

The Mojomojo is ace. Gives a decent amount of grit when cranked but it’s a pretty dark sounding pedal So be aware of that. The really great thing with these is you can pick them up used for pretty much what you’ll sell them for again, which is practically nowt. Think I paid about £25 for mine.

I got some decent enough ‘hair’ out of the American Sound. Not bad at all for the price in that respect but mine was noisy as hell. I may well have just been unfortunate but I guess it’s always the risk with the budget mass produced stuff.

    Hope that’s off some use.

  5. Mine arrived Thursday.

Gave it a run at rehearsal last night. Very impressed. Simple to use and while the EQ is very straight forward it gives some decent tonal shaping. I also couldn’t get a bad tone out of it. Just good, solid bass.

The included bag is rubbish, cheap feeling/looking and offers no protection but could kind of serve a function, the tuner is a bit crap too (though OKish as a backup) and yes, the fan is a little on the loud side, but it won’t cause any issues for what I’ll use the amp for.

All in all on first impressions I’m very happy indeed for the price paid.

I see your point, but I hope that, for a band that plays mostly covers, that job would have to be done once, then info would be stored and retrieved as needed. Especially if the setlist changes little between gigs.

Incidentally, payment is apparently now around £10 per gig.

Looked into this a while back and, unless my wine-sodden mind is mistaken (quite possible!), to qualify for payment don’t the venues the artist plays have to be part of the PRS’s gigs and small venues scheme?

At the time it seemed to me a stab in the dark (as part of a ‘toilet venue’  level band) as to whether it was worth paying the fee just for performance royalties In those kind of venues as, at least then, I don’t think there was a searchable database of participating venues, at least not prior to sign up.

  7. You’ll not have the “what if” questions if you don’t give it a go. You likely will if you don’t give it a whirl. Just my opinion obvs but where opportunity knocks it’s worth opening the door, even if you decide thereafter it’s not for you.

  8. If memory serves I think these had a PJ configuration rather than the original soapbar pups, so from a tonal point of view they’ll have a different vibe about them to the Gibbos. Other than that I can’t be of much help. I’ve a ‘76 Ripper that’s been beaten and modded to hell so won’t sound like either of the above configs! It’s pretty light though!

  9. Well, I don’t know anyone on here, yet have still had nothing but great experiences buying, selling and from posting generally. It’s largely down to a community of decent people. I could count on one hand the number of threads I’ve seen in years on here that have descended into sniping. Most posts on most forums are the opposite of that IME...

  10. Hey all,

I rarely make purchases on a whim these days but I just have, a Hilbish Design Beta pre-amp. I’ve never run a power amp/pre-amp setup before and wondering what power amp suggestions or guidance anyone’s got to kick me off on my voyage of discovery as I’ve not a clue!

    Thanks in advance.
