1.
Beauty is most definitely in the eye of the beholder. ...........
I absolutely agree! I love my bass - the shape and the colour (not to mention light as a feather which was the most important pre-requisite for me!)
  2. Hi all, would one of these be any good for my Ibanez SR300? http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Electric-Bass-Guitar-Case-by-Gear4music/800 I don't want to spend too much because I want to get a floor tuner as well, one of these http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Korg-Pitchblack-Floor-Pedal-Tuner/8W5
  3.
Good job! Playing with other people is definitely one of the best ways to learn. Keep it up and every time you'll get better and better and build more and more confidence. You'll be surprised how fast the nerves disappear and it just becomes the norm.
Yes it's the first hurdle out of the way
Great vote of confidence that, having the drummer say you`re good on timing. More jams will only make you even better.
I was in a band with him for 2 years (on my sax) so know him well enough - he will always tell it as it is! I did lose it a couple of times but on the whole he said it was pretty good
Well done, sounds like you had a great time, keep it up John
I did! I just kept thinking to myself if Carole Kay can still play then I can do this
Great stuff! Well done. My pal is in this situation at the moment. He has played guitar for years, but the idea of playing music with others terrifies him. Gonna show him this thread. Congratulations and again well done! RK
Yes he must go for it! do show him - I've put it off for 3 years wish I'd done it sooner
  4. So much better than I thought it would thanks guys!! We played various blues, Stormy Monday, Rock me Baby, Red House et al, we did White House, and a funked up jammed blues - very pleased with my own made up funk groove! Stuff I've never played before - Buffalo Springfield's Hey Stop What's that Sound, some Neill Young numbers that I've never even heard before, pleased I was able to busk them I asked my friends to tell me whether I should carry on and they said definitely and they're up for more jams - drummer said I was pretty good on timing, the guitarist said I played far better than he thought I would from the way I'd been describing my progress! I think I learned more in that one jam than I have done all the time teaching myself at home jamming along to songs and backing tracks. My bass was featherlight - 3 hours and no pain in shoulder! My Promethean Amp - amazing sound for a tiny weeny thing!!! All in all - very enthused
  5.
Good Luck (wo)man. You'll love it. It's what your bass is for, after all. Have a blast! RK
I will thanks
You'll be fine ... take ear plugs....
Cheers Yep got the ear plugs - as a saxophonist I'm used to very noisy band members!
Good luck and have fun John
Will do thanks
  6. Well ......3 years, 2 basses and 3 amps on, I'm finally taking my bass for a jam with some very sympathetic and patient mates (drums and guitar) tonight, excited but very nervous and hoping I don't make a total fool of myself!
  7. Jack Bruce gets my vote - love his walking bass lines and sultry voice
  8. I've had more success earning an income in music than painting! .... I now do both, I sell a few paintings/do a few commissions, I teach Sax and Flute privately, add in a few reasonably well paid gigs here and there (horn section stuff mainly) and it's not too bad, but.... I'm "lucky" to have a very frugal lifestyle and an extremely small mortgage, so it works well for me I'm hoping my bass playing will improve enough to add that into the mix too
  9.
The Germans can be relied on for super fast delivery. I've bought amps and instruments from there and had them shipped to me faster than a UK shop can send me a small pack of strings, and with no suspicious holes in the parcel.
It certainly was excellent service - I ordered it Tuesday and watched it on the tracking - it arrived today! I ordered something from a UK online store for the Sax last Thursday and it's only just been dispatched today!
  10. Thank you Hamfist, luckily I had a spare one here from an another amp with 3 pins
  11. Thanks Luke, I was reading the instruction manual (the English section! - it's an Ibanez amp) and it says "use this device only in the country where you purchased it" also it came with a 2 pin plug I phoned them and they said it was fine to use one that I had here with a UK 3 pin plug but I got a bit paranoid after reading that! Yes I agree on the UKIP thing!
  12. This is a really daft question but if I buy an amp from abroad (Germany) will it be the same safety wise as if I had bought one from UK?
  13. Play a Sax in a band instead and wish it was a bass (still learning!)
  14. Diminshed and wholetone patterns are cool for playing "outside"
  15. I started playing bass on the wrong side of 50 as part of my "grandmother growing old disgracefully" plan! when I'm accomplished enough I will get a power trio together
  16. Doesn't resemble anything I've ever seen it before (I play a lot of jazz on sax), but notes 2 - 4 are from the super locrian scale..... (Edited to make sense!)
  17. As a gigging (and rather mature!) sax player, I often get comments such as "You did really well playing that sax - well done!" I do admit to being rubbish with mics and electronic equipment ...... but I am the queen of parallel parking
  18.
You should be sorted by the end of next week.
Phew!!
Ibbys have a unique sound , which makes them preferable to all the Fender copies out there.
I really like it - it feels and sounds just right for me
Good basses the SR300. Nothing more to say really
I think so too
Although not an SR300, I have a 1984 Ibanez Roadstar II RB650, which I bought it last month for £199 + £20 postage and all I had to do to it was to give it a thorough clean, I've had to scrub some serious dirt and grime from the neck and cavities and after a set of new strings and a quick setup it plays better than a bass worth at least a thousand notes. I was reading about it on TalkBass and some people there were saying the pickups was the only thing that let this bass down, but I reckon whoever said that don't know what they are talking about, these pickups are fantastic, clear as day, loud and the simple controls work like a dream, infact to me this is one of the best P/J 4 string basses I've ever played. https://www.facebook...12088030&type=3
Very nice and what a bargain!
  19. Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying my Ibanez SR300 which has given me such a boost I can't put it down!! I gave up trying to learn on a cheapy P copy which was way to heavy for me so I gave up a couple of years ago. I just hope I have enough time left (Im 54) to learn to play it properly
  20. Does anyone know what the Ibanez SR300 weighs?
  21.
Missing bar? Missing bar? What you on about, girl? I'm just great at the 1 bar blues, the 2 bar blues, the 3 bar blues. etc. .... upto and including the 11 bar blues, but have yet to nail this elusive 12 bar one. Maybe a bit above my head and slightly beyond the quantity of my fingers... Sax: nope. I just borrowed one for a few months, as I played the flute back then. But I'm really a keyboardist. My personal take on cool: Really cool instruments: bass, drums, sax. Slightly less so: guitar, pipe organ and modular synths with loads of knobs and jacks Nothing for a while . . . . . Piano.
Could start a new trend I suppose ! I totally agree with your cool instrument choices
  22.
Welcome Saxy Beast. There's some who have made multi-million pound careers by vaguely mastering the 12-bar blues.
Hmmm should have used that as a user name! Cool I'll carry on practicing them then
Hey SB, Welcome! Yup, you're not alone. I tried the saxophone once, and could improvise a sax solo well enough, but only in 1 to 11 bar blues. Never ever reached your 12 bar level. So relax and rejoice! You're OK. That and you chose some cool instruments. Enjoy the site! best, bert
Hey Bert - hopefully no-one noticed the 1 missing bar! - Do you still play Sax? Yep pretty cool aren't they
