1. Sometimes when something looks too good to be true, it is, but sometimes you just gotta trust in look and take a punt. But having just had a pretty good result into my first foray into the world of the precision with my USA 1984, which is in tip top nick, and sounds awesome, I just bought a 71 precision for what can only be a very good price (although it's hasn't actually arrived yet!, and could turn out to be a piece of junk!) Although I haven't seen the bass other than a few scratchy photos, I have spoken to the seller and being a pretty good judge of character I think he's an honest bloke. He's had the bass since 1972 and only modification is a recent change of pickups, although he has put the original ones in the (original) case should I want to get them fixed. I had bought this to sell on and something has to go if I want to stay out of the divorce courts! But something tells me that this may just stay and it may be my status that is on the for sale forum in a couple of weeks. Photos to follow once it arrives on Tuesday. On a side note, what's the crack with old pickups, can they be fixed or once they have gone is that pretty much it?
2. Well at the moment it smells of polish! I think I'm gonna put some some chromes on this baby later today! I was looking to buy this and move it on, but I'm so impressed with my first precision that it looks as though my Status s2 classic may have to go instead, unless I can convince that wife that two basses are better than one!
3. Thanks, I can't wait for it to get a good setup and some new strings.
4. If my AER amp one is anything to go by this will be awesome!
5. This may be a silly question, but if these are the original strings is it worth hanging onto them should I decide to sell in the future?
6. Gareth, there is not a single mark on this bass, could have been built yesterday, I must admit I have never played a precision before this, and even though it needs a good set up and the strings are probably 30 Yeats old, it sounds great, bathroom scales say it weighs 8.4oz
7. Well I took the plunge, paid a little more than I wanted but bought this, it looks as though it came out of the factory yesterday not 30 years ago, there is not a mark on it, I think it's even got the original strings on it! It even has the guarantee and inspection card from the factory. It also has absolute killer tone, photos below s1161.photobucket.com/user/chrisanthony1211/library/AER%20clone/Clone%20mk%202/Fender%20precision%20USA%201984?sort=3&page=1
8. I'll give you a bam bump, I had one of these and they sound great, good job they have wheels though! :-)
9. Ive been to have a look and I can tell you it is immaculate, it could pass for new, black body, white pick guard, beautiful glossy maple neck. I got the history mixed up with another P bass I been looking at. This one was owned by a collector who died, his family then sold all his basses. The bloke bought it thinking he would renew his passion but it never happened for him. This looks like it has spent 30 years in its case, it may not be a V reissue but it looks a quality instrument, I'm very temped, there can't be many 30 year old precisions in this condition. It needed a good set up and some new strings but looks like new!
10. I've been doing some research and with the truss in the headstock could this be a 57 reissue? if it doesnt have a V in the serial number does that mean its not vintage, the serial is E310717, ive been trying to make sence of the Fender dating web page but not sure, were they only making reissues in 84 at Fullerton??? how would i tell if its a 57 reissue?
11. I'm off to have a look at it tomorrow evening and will report back, the photos aren't particularly good so it's a good job he lives just around the corner from me, but it does like the truss is in the headstock, it does look to be immaculate though! Maybe not such a bargain after all :-/
12. I think I shall follow this one up, if all is as it seems it could be a bargain.
13. This guys had it from new and purchased in 84 so I'm pretty sure about the date, will get some photos of pots etc before I decide, so USA 1984 are good basses then?
14. I got my eye on a 1984 fender precision made at Fullerton in 1984 which looks to be immaculate!
15. What' strings are people using on their graphite necks? I'm currently using la bella deep talking flats on my status s2 which I'm pretty happy with as they give some smooth deep funk, but I may try some status half wound as they're very cheap and get some decent reviews, I find that round wound can be a little middy, on a graphite neck.
16. Hi, beautiful bass, do you know when this was made?
17. I've owned a couple of status and both have been great, one with a truss and one without, I hear great things about the Peavey Quad and would take a close look if one came up for grabs on here. The musicman cutlass is a tempting beautie, I just can't help thinking that I'd like a truss rod with my graphite neck these days, with no truss rod the only way to change relief is via string gauge which is not ideal, I think that if that cutlass had a truss I'd be buying the wife some flowers some time soon and possibly spending a night or two sleeping at a mates house! Another big positive I think for Status basses is that Rob and Dawn are so easily contactable, unrivalled customer care from the man himself! Can't go far wrong with that. What are people's thoughts / experiences of graphite necks with or without truss rods?
18. Stingray button pushed, graphite button pushed, modulus button pushed, is there any reason other than the wife why I shouldn't buy this bass?
19. I sold my mesa walkabout about 4 years ago and just found the user manual and a mesa catalogue hiding at the back of a wardrobe, anyone wanting this just let me know your address and I'll post it off.
20. Has anyone tried the miller carbon fibre bass, I notice there is one for sale on bass chat at the moment.
21. I forgot to mention moses, I have heard some conflicting reviews on their necks but I have seen them come up on eBay from time to time. I do fancy a modulus and can't help thinking that they could well be a good investment if held onto for a few years!
22. I was wondering what the consensus is about who made / makes the best graphite necks for bass. I've owned a Status Stealth and currently have a Status S2 Classic and love playing these graphite necks above and beyond anything else I have tried. I have never had the opportunity to play any other make of graphite neck but I’m now tempted to increase my graphite neck collection and wondered whether there are any major differences between Status, Modulus, Zon, Vigier necks ect. All thoughts and experiences are welcomed.
23. I've actually used tuff cab and I'm very surprised and impressed with the finish. I don't know how durable it is yet but the finish is very professional.
