Fender Precision 1971 (now with photos)

A drop of oil did the trick on those tuners, but seriously dirty rosewood fretboard and frets, not sure lemon oil is going to cut through all that gunk! -
That's lovely. Looks identical to mine, except mine has a fair bit more buckle rash on it, but same lovely sunburst and rich tort plate. Good work sir - a bass for life!
A bass for life indeed, and I think these are great investments which are surely only going to go up in value, I bought a Fullerton 1984 precision two weeks ago for £800 which had been owned by a collector and looks like new, again surely a good investment, I think I've convinced the wife that vintage basses could be a good retirement plan, and lots of fun for me in meantime :-) -
Very nice and what a stupendously good price. How did I miss this on Ebay?
I've been doing some "bass trawling" on preloved, gumtree and eBay recently and there are bargains to be had, about six months ago I missed out on a 1972 jazz bass on eBay which went for £750, with 20 seconds to go on the auction it was on £450 and I foolishly only bid £700 thinking it was a certainty and was gutted when I missed out, I wasn't going to miss this one, I'm glad you weren't "bass trawling" Friday else I'm pretty sure you'd have beaten me to it as it took me until Saturday to convince the wife it was a bargain! -

Thanks, really pleased with it, it was an eBay buy it now, I did a little research but thought it wouldn't be on there long so took a punt and hoped it was genuine. The only thing is that the tuners are really stiff, any advice for the best way to sort them out? -

Arrived today, and what a beauty, it even smells like 1971, I've never payed a bass like this before and it is truly wonderful! It obviously hadn't been played for quite some time as when it arrived it was just about unplayable with a ridiculously high action, and old strings, but a few turns of the truss rod which thankfully turns nice and smoothly, some new chromes and a little attention to string height and intonation and all of a sudden I have a beauty in my hands. What a tone! Got this for less than a grand too! Check out my photos. http://s1161.photobucket.com/user/chrisanthony1211/library/AER%20clone/Clone%20mk%202/Fender%20precision%20USA%201984/1971%20precision?sort=3&page=1 -

I've emailed Mr Kent who has advised me that a very reasonable £55 would get both pick ups rewound, less if the fix doesn't need rewiring, that's actually a similar price to the new fender original pick ups that have been put onto it, anyone know if these are any good? Parcel force tracking currently has it in Poole, should arrive tomorrow, I may have to chain the wife up in the house so she doesn't miss the delivery :-/ There could be be troubled the mill if she pops out to her mums, misses Mr parcel force and I've gotta wait until Wednesday! -

Thanks, I've emailed them for a guesstimate for a repair. -
Sometimes when something looks too good to be true, it is, but sometimes you just gotta trust in look and take a punt. But having just had a pretty good result into my first foray into the world of the precision with my USA 1984, which is in tip top nick, and sounds awesome, I just bought a 71 precision for what can only be a very good price (although it's hasn't actually arrived yet!, and could turn out to be a piece of junk!) Although I haven't seen the bass other than a few scratchy photos, I have spoken to the seller and being a pretty good judge of character I think he's an honest bloke. He's had the bass since 1972 and only modification is a recent change of pickups, although he has put the original ones in the (original) case should I want to get them fixed. I had bought this to sell on and something has to go if I want to stay out of the divorce courts! But something tells me that this may just stay and it may be my status that is on the for sale forum in a couple of weeks. Photos to follow once it arrives on Tuesday. On a side note, what's the crack with old pickups, can they be fixed or once they have gone is that pretty much it?
-
Well at the moment it smells of polish! I think I'm gonna put some some chromes on this baby later today! I was looking to buy this and move it on, but I'm so impressed with my first precision that it looks as though my Status s2 classic may have to go instead, unless I can convince that wife that two basses are better than one!
-
Thanks, I can't wait for it to get a good setup and some new strings.
-
-
This may be a silly question, but if these are the original strings is it worth hanging onto them should I decide to sell in the future?
-
Yep, still got it, you want it?
-
Gareth, there is not a single mark on this bass, could have been built yesterday, I must admit I have never played a precision before this, and even though it needs a good set up and the strings are probably 30 Yeats old, it sounds great, bathroom scales say it weighs 8.4oz
-
Well I took the plunge, paid a little more than I wanted but bought this, it looks as though it came out of the factory yesterday not 30 years ago, there is not a mark on it, I think it's even got the original strings on it! It even has the guarantee and inspection card from the factory. It also has absolute killer tone, photos below s1161.photobucket.com/user/chrisanthony1211/library/AER%20clone/Clone%20mk%202/Fender%20precision%20USA%201984?sort=3&page=1

Ive been to have a look and I can tell you it is immaculate, it could pass for new, black body, white pick guard, beautiful glossy maple neck. I got the history mixed up with another P bass I been looking at. This one was owned by a collector who died, his family then sold all his basses. The bloke bought it thinking he would renew his passion but it never happened for him. This looks like it has spent 30 years in its case, it may not be a V reissue but it looks a quality instrument, I'm very temped, there can't be many 30 year old precisions in this condition. It needed a good set up and some new strings but looks like new!
-
I've been doing some research and with the truss in the headstock could this be a 57 reissue? if it doesnt have a V in the serial number does that mean its not vintage, the serial is E310717, ive been trying to make sence of the Fender dating web page but not sure, were they only making reissues in 84 at Fullerton??? how would i tell if its a 57 reissue?
-
I'm off to have a look at it tomorrow evening and will report back, the photos aren't particularly good so it's a good job he lives just around the corner from me, but it does like the truss is in the headstock, it does look to be immaculate though! Maybe not such a bargain after all :-/
-
I think I shall follow this one up, if all is as it seems it could be a bargain.
-
This guys had it from new and purchased in 84 so I'm pretty sure about the date, will get some photos of pots etc before I decide, so USA 1984 are good basses then?
-
I got my eye on a 1984 fender precision made at Fullerton in 1984 which looks to be immaculate!

What' strings are people using on their graphite necks? I'm currently using la bella deep talking flats on my status s2 which I'm pretty happy with as they give some smooth deep funk, but I may try some status half wound as they're very cheap and get some decent reviews, I find that round wound can be a little middy, on a graphite neck.
