1.
Sad that this has turned into another Valves are great, SS is bad thread.
Got to say that I love both, but for entirely different reasons, I love solid state amps for their power to weight ratio, and clear sounds, and I love valve Amps for their creamy smooth lows...... I don't think one is better than the other, just different, it's like saying do I like bread a butter pudding or double sticky toffee pudding (with rivers of custard) , you just got to love them both...
2. Rehersal went well with the 30 watts of Ampeg, we're not the loudest band in the world, but the Ampeg more than held its own, didn't gig with it on Saturday as there was a real estate shortage and the markbass takes up a lot less space, next gig it gets a runout..
3.
For the test to be fair, you did of course have only 1x 12" speaker connected in the Ampeg cab then?
The first test I did was through the combos own speakers, I did again putting them both through a Mark bass NY121, and the results were much the same, the Mark bass was about 1db louder, which I think is about 10% First rehersal with it tomorrow night 🤔🤔
4.
Sounds encouraging! (I wonder why they are so expensive though?)
They're German, everything the Germans do is expensive (and generally pretty damn good too)
5. Big thumbs up for the pyramid golds, they are my new favourite flat, a few hours of playing and the G string has settled down nicely, they're quite a mellow string, I love the tension, they really seem to have got that bang on, these are quite expensive so I would hope they would be good, and they will stay on my bass for quite some time. I love TI flats, and will probably stick them on another bass at sometime in the future, but I think the tension and low end thump of the pyramids win out for me. I'm sure these will just get better and better.
6.
Interesting result, I assumed that the Markbass combo would have been running very inefficiently with such a small enclosure volume for the combo speaker and would have opened the gap a bit when using the same cab for both amps. How loud (db) does the B15 get before distortion becomes unavoidable?
There's no crazy distortion even when turned up to 10, it breaks up a bit, but in a very nice way, but I wouldn't call it distortion, I have my first practise with it on Friday night, and then will be gigging it on Saturday night, I may sling my markbass and NY extension cab in the boot just in case!,,,, It will be interesting to see how it get on at practise, I used to have a 240 watt SWR redhead which sounded sweet, but even struggled to cut through when practising, I'm pretty sure the Ampeg is louder than that was, but time will tell..... I suppose what a solid state amp gives you is the weight and size advantage, but for some reason you need to pump more watts through it to achieve the same volume!
7. I just did the test again, but with both going through my Mark bass NY121 extension cab and the results were much the same, if anything the Ampeg was fractionally louder than through its own speaker, according to my decibel monitor, but only a fraction, and the Mark bass was still fractional louder than the Ampeg, but not 270watts worth louder, we're just talking about 1db which I think is about 10% louder.
8.
I suspect your test shows more about the efficiency of the cab/driver combinations in each combo at turning watts into db than whether the B15(or valve watts) is somehow magically louder - you would need to run both amps through the same cab to get a meaningful comparison.
This can be arranged, I shall put them both through the same 8ohm speaker tomorrow night and do the same test....
9.
I await the results of Mrs Anthony's live experiment next Saturday with bated trousers.
It's Mr Anthony!!!! It's 82 lbs according to the spec on the website, my plan is for Ampeg b15 on ground floor gigs, markbass stack for anything above ground level, although to be honest, it doesn't seem that heavy....
10.
Interesting. Well that's put me right off getting any markbass gear!
The Mark bass is great, lighter and louder than anything this size has any right to be, its just that the Ampeg 30 watts are pretty magical (and heavy) and it should be considering how much these things cost! I certainly won't be getting rid of the Mark bass, of all the amps I've had, it's the one I've kept the longest, it's so practical, and with the equally practical NY121 you have a powerful lightweight 212 rig...
11. Well this may not be the most scientific experiment in the world, but it's the best I have. I A / B volume tested the two amps with a decibel monitor placed about 20 foot away, 30 watts of Ampeg and the left, 300 watts of Mark bass on the right...(the Ampeg certainly wins out on sexiness!!) The Mark bass got to 94 / 95 decibels at about three quarters volume, it was sounding stressed and maxed out and I certainly wasn't going to take it any higher, and it didn't really get much louder after 12 o clock, and the quality of the sound was certainly degenerating. The Ampeg was quite happy being maxed out and sounded great from 1 through to 10, and that maxed out at 93 / 94 decibels, which I think is about 10% less volume than the Mark bass. As I said, not the most scientific test in the world, but tells a story, I've not gigged it yet, that comes next Saturday in a function room at a pub which will be a test as our drummer is not the quietest..... Oh, and my favourite channel,on the Ampeg is the 1964 channel which is only 25 watt......🤔 When I bought it off Beadster he said it was surprisingly loud, and he was right, gets me thinking about those watts though!,,
12. Technology obviously changes, and I guess since 2008 there have been a few break throughs regarding getting maximum heft! However all my thoughts about watts and volume have been soundly turned on their head by my resent acquisition of beadsters Ampeg heritage b15, with a hefty 30 watts through a single 15 inch speaker, this baby is loud, and matches my 300 watt Mark bass CMD121p for volume, and kicks it's ass for heft! I'm yet to gig with it, but that will be done next Saturday night, but I'm expecting great things, so the answer to the initial post, is ......... Don't be fooled by watts.......!
13. Fortunately it's my 64 precision I'm looking at getting one for, it will look stunning (once I have the brownie points) Unless anyone is selling one!
14. Put on my new Pyramid Golds yesterday, straight out the packet the G seems a little lively, but I'm sure that will bed down nicely over the next week or so, other than that these strings are beautiful, very smooth, and great tension, not as high tension as a lot of flats, and not as floppy as my other favourite flats TI's, but a very nice balance. They sound earthy and thumpy with sing song highs, they could well be my new favourite flats, although they are a little prices, you get what you pay for!
15. Discrete is correct, there is tort, and there is tort, I'm tolerating a reissue tort until I can earn enough brownie points with the missus to get myself a spitfire tort, however I think the mint looks lovely with your jazz !

17. I currently have TI flats on my Precision which I do really like, however I can't quite decide if I like the low tension or not, one day I love it, the next day I'm not quite so sure, but they do sound great! Anyway I've decided to give some Pyramid golds a try, they should hopefully be arriving tomorrow, not cheap, but I'm not expecting to have to change them for a while!
18. Kustom 200watts of terribleness, shocking, no bass, no volume, just a crappy trebly farty noise, not nice!
19. Traded my blue sparkle flea bass for Chris's Ampeg B-15, very smooth deal, he even came up on the train to facilitate the trade, thanks chris
20. I think a spitfire guard could be on the wanted list for later this year, I personally much prefer a tort pickguard and was going to keep it for prosperity or if I was ever going to sell the bass, I suppose I could be tempted to move it on !
21.
Nice try.
But it is tempting.......
