1. JimmiClarke your playing is fabulous dude! Very very nice. Great tone also.
2.
http://youtu.be/Kxkoxb5rDF4 The Musicman tone I'm after.
Oooo that is some tone!! I'd like it a tiny bit less 'rattley" but apart from that it's near perfect. It seems my thread has stirred some passion, I thought it might but everyone play nice, ok? :-p by sheer coincidence, I watched that Louis Johnson video about two hours ago. That man is a monster bassist. The bit where he's slapping with his index finger is particularly nuts!
3. There seems to be a real buzz growing around this band among musicians, I see their name appear on forums a lot. I'll have to check them out.
4.
Thanks, FunkyDunky :-) I haven't had a proper chance to see what she sounds like in a playing situation or at any decent volume yet. My first impression is that this thing is alive with resonance! I'll have a much better idea of how she responds in a band situation at rehearsal next Thursday - can't wait! These are two sets of P pickups in a 'mirror' position. Passively either pickup gives a very deep resonating 'piano' sound in the lower notes and great singing clarity higher up.
I would love to hear this!
5. Thanks for the info on John Deacon :-) I agree wholeheartedly with 'Take The Power Back', superb 'Ray tone and a fantastic riff to boot.
6. I always associated Deacy with Fenders for some reason, what hits did he use a Ray on?
7. I'm doing a wee bit of research on this wonderful, wonderful tone and looking for views - on which recording - or from which player, have you heard what is, in your opinion, the quintessential MM bass tone? Which model of bass? Which amp was it married with? Post videos or links if you can please :-)
8. Nice acquisition sir. Two PJ pups? How does that sound? Is there a great deal of difference between the two pickups in terms of sounds?
9. First I heard RK was on the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey OST, been a fan since then. Lucky enough to have seen him live two or three times. Was 4 feet away from him on the Cornford stand at MusicLive in Birmingham once, but he reeked of booze and looked grumpy so I didn't dare speak to him (never meet your idols and all that). The guy is ridiculously talented in all departments, one of my all-time favourite singers too. Glad someone posted the 'Payin' Dues' video, it's a great example of him doing what he does best.
10.
I started on guitar and was very average, but rather than the failed guitarist we are often known as I think it was because I was drawn to the bass, even when I bought a good guitar at the age of about 15.
Almost the same as my story. Started on guitar at 16, knew I wanted to be a bassist at 18, but persevered on guitar. Only finally got round to bass two years ago, but wish I'd done it when I was 18. With 19 years under my belt, I would be amazing now (hopefully).
11. Norman Watt-Roy......d'oh!! Can't believe I left him out.
12.
Deon Estus on the bench....Wham etc
What a bassplayer that guy is! Doesn't get nearly the love he deserves. Apparently Jamerson taught him? Is that true??
13. In no particular order, and 10 just isn't isn't enough: Stuart Zender Paul Turner James Jamerson Flea Bernard Edwards Billy Sheehan (is not my lover) Larry Graham Mike Inez Robert DeLeo Rocco Prestia It pains me to have to leave out Mark King and Justin Chancellor.
14.
Why did you have to go and resurrect this thread.... I'd almost got the image of this out of my head.
Actually lol'd there!!
15. Congrats, that's a sweet-looking bass! How's the tone?
16. Just done some reading on the Amplug 2 - I'm definitely buying one!
17. Fabtastic! Thanks for your endorsements chaps, will be picking one up methinks :-)
18. Does anyone here own one, or have you used one? I had recently enquired on this very forum about portable amps for bass and then I found out about the Amplug, seems brilliant but I would imagine it sounds awful. Very very inexpensive too imo, but on paper an ideal practice tool.
19. https://www.carolkaye.com/www/education/tips1.htm Contains a library of fantastic tips, theory and advice for the bassplayer. I've bookmarked it and am sure I will refer to it often. Some of it is a bit beyond my grasp at the minute, but I'll get there.
20. That's good news. I can manage on a Precision neck comfortably so that brings the Euro back into play for me. Still leaning towards a SS1 mind you, but I do dig those Euros.
21. Haven't played one, but watched some videos and was blown away by the Euro LX. The tone is so thick and dark, I just love it. Mike Starr (R.I.P.) of Alice In Chains used Spectors, and the bass tone on 'Would?' is awesome imo. I read somewhere that they have fat necks though, which would sadly rule them out for me.
22.
Saw this video a couple of weeks back, I actually preferred the sound of the CV Squier to the Fenders!
I completely agree! It sounded absolutely wicked. Can't have hurt that he ran it through a Genz Benz mind you. But yes, I thought it sounded superior.
23. These are impressive basses. There is a video of Ed Friedland playing the CV range up against the Fender originals and to be honest, the Squier CV P more than holds its own.
24.
a light touch with your fretting hand and foam tucked under near the bridge, does anyone ever wonder if bernard edwards used the mutes on his stingray early on?
I had thought about foam mutes, but it felt like cheating a wee bit. Worth a try though. Is that Jason King in your pic??
25.
There are two ways to do it in a conventional style, ie not Gary Willis, who has a different technique. First off, after just two years playing you have picked on a pretty advanced style and technique. You can mute LH or RH but Scott Devine explains what you are trying to achieve well with a LH mute. Search Ghost notes bass on Google and Scott Devine will crop up quickly but basically keep the RH notes consistant... Play straight 8's/quavers off the RH and fret and mute with the left. That will break up the pattern you are playing to give you enough of an idea to develop what you want. A mute of the LH is a simple release of the fretting finger to get a dull thud in comparison to the sound of playing the actual note.
fantastic, thank you for this! Will give this a shot and report back my findings after some experimentation.
