1. Congrats Tom, that looks beautiful! I really like the black, and I'll wager the tone is great with that maple board :-)
2. Thanks all, will try each suggestion. I use Dunlop Super Bright strings.
3. That's pretty steep, but I guess I only paid £250 for the bass and it's not bad if it makes it sound like a dream. Like I say, that would be my main bass so I reckon it'd be money well spent. Sincere apologies to the OP for hijacking the thread somewhat.
4. That's got the Aguilar preamp mod as well as the pickup. That's very close to the tone I crave. The Ag pickup comes in at around £90 but goodness knows how much the preamp is. I think, however, I may do this upgrade to my Sub and keep it forever :-).
5. Thanks Colin, some good reading there. If I was to mod my Sub, I think I'd plump for this as I think it sounds absolutely awesome: http://youtu.be/WwsDqprJzio
6. IMO the greatest ever. Had some killer bassists too - a guy called Tom Warrington stands out, absolutely fantastic. But yes, there are some incredible stories about Buddy's temper. A spoonerism of his name would best describe what he was like to work with.
7. I hate it, but if I'm doing really quick position shifts or any kind of slurs/slides, I get that heinous EEEEK and it makes me sad/angry. What should I do with my fingers to avoid this? It seems impossible to take them completely off the strings then shift them to the next fret in the sequence and put them down quickly enough to play smoothly and flawlessly. I watch videos of good bassists playing unaccompanied and I don't hear a single EEEEEK. How in the name of all that is good and pure is this possible? I get EEEEEEK constantly!
8. Colin, did the mod alter the tone in any way?
9.
. I think he was dismissed for being too good
I HATE that! Damn egos.
10. I like the Streamliner. Is that just for the head or will that get me a cab too??
11. http://youtu.be/r6VIPCoJArg Thunderpaws - I think it gives a Fender P a run for its money. G&L's R&D man is Paul Gagon, and he learned all about pickups from the legendary Abigail Ybarra during his time at Fender. Apparently he took every Fender pickup apart to see what made them tick. This is why G&L instruments have such fabulous tones :-)
12. Can any of you fine gentlemen post soundclips to your modded Subs if you have the means, please? I'm interested in the Stinger but I dunno how much a shop would take to swap the preamps. Would love to hear it to hear if the difference is worth the expense.
13. I'm still jonesing big tike for a Spector Euro 4LX - that will only ever go away if I get one!! A Markbass amp is creeping into my GASlist. And from out of nowhere, I'm not GASing yet, but I'm suddenly interested in trying a Yamaha Attitude - just to see what they play like. I've been learning some of the less terrifying Billy Sheehan stuff and I love the tone he gets, although I don't think I could have it as my 'everyday' sound....
14. Just got a Sub Ray 4 and will be throwing some new strings on it. Dunlop Super Brights are my preferred choice for my Squier, and they sound great for slappery, but I just wanted to ask Sterling and Stingray owners if there is a particular type of string you feel gets the best version of 'that' trademark tone from your bass? thangvermuch.
15. No experience playing one but all reviews I've read are full of praise. If you go on YouTube and search 'musiclisha' bassist Alysha Moore has a really nice green RMI Boomslang and she absolutely raves about it. She has been using it in her lastest uploads, so you'll get to hear it.
16. Yeah, he showed up when I was looking through bass covers of Uptown Funk. I dig his tone and feel, thought his was the best version.
17. Heard this lady? Plays bass with the Travis Larson band. I've only heard a snippet of her, in a Markbass promo vid on YouTube, but I was pretty impressed. Bit 'stunt' but really good. Ida Nielsen, Prince's new bassist, is quite the phenom also. Great funk licks and I dig her tone.
18. I got one from Thomann in Trans Blue Satin, and after a silly bit of deliberating (was almost going to send it back and get a 5 instead) I have opted to keep it. I will have a NBD thread up, with pics, as soon as poss. Congrats on the bass, and the astounding price dude!
19.
Even harder to play it with just one finger on the plucking hand - quite how St. James did it beggars belief.
Twas Wilton Felder ;-)
20.
Errrr .... how long?
A YEAR. A FUNKING YEAR!! Now, don't get me wrong, I did not work on it exclusively or at great length for a year. I visited it in and off, and learned plenty other tunes in that time. I broke it right down in an attempt to realise what was tripping me up. I really struggled with the second half of the verse part, when it turns around on itself and starts coming back up. It also didn't help that I was aiming for the Paul Turner/Shuffler version which is a good bit quicker than the original.
21. I said recently that I wasn't a fan of these, but that is actually stunning!
22. What's the deal with these puppies, I hear them mentioned in the same breath as Genz Benz....something about circuitry is it?
23.
I gave up on Rhythm stick as I sounded like a four year old falling down the stairs with a bass
Ask me how long it took me to nail it!! Ask me!!
