Well I think I’m jumping back on the long (normal?) scale train after deciding I just feel so at home on a Rickenbacker.

Will likely be listing my Pawn Shop Mustang in the near future, undecided on my Serek, Hofner will stay because nothing does the hofner vibe like a hofner.

Then that would take me down to 3 basses…….. .finally

Then I’ll have a bunch of high end guitar cases to sell 😅

Also excited to see the Pawn Shop but it would mean pushing on one of my Mustangs, likely the Mikey Way sig which I know I'd regret :(

I upgraded my pj5 fretless with the higher spec pickups and frankly I might as well not have bothered, the difference in noise was almost imperceptible to my ear. (Fortunately I didn't pay £250 for them 😅)

I think the stock pups are pretty good, I gather the stock pre is a bit meh which is why people stick in a proper Sadowsky one or the East.

Gosh they're cheap. I feel like even if the electrics aren't great, if you've got the tools you should be able to sort them as the fundamental build seems decent. Really don't need another bass though, hmmm.

The previous owner of mine had a John East installed - perfect.

  4. I picked up a later first Gen fretless one off here and to be honest it's a great bass.  Put together nicely, lightweight but well balanced can't fault it really.  The fretboard is a great slab of ebony, the paint job is gloss (hate cheap satin finishes) and flawless to my eyes  Things I don't like; the headstock decal (yes, I'm shallow) and the adjustable nut isn't the prettiest.

  5. Wouldn't sweat it - it's a Jam.

I get caught out all the time; I'm filling in on the house band at a local Jam for a few weeks while the normal bassist is recovering from surgery and have had to pick up quite a few songs on the fly.  Managed to play a Fratellis song pretty badly last night that I thought I knew, a combination of the less than great monitors and my crap hearing had me playing catch-up on the key through most of the song.......nobody made a comment.

  6. After a few weeks off we were back to the fore last night at a local charity event in a social club. Went for the set up in the afternoon as I’d agreed to let the band on before us use my bass rig, we were last on so that was fine. The soundcheck seemed to take forever, I guess I’m just used to us being quick and tidy on that at our own gigs….and of course as we were last on there were sound glitches when we started - no monitor feed, but we got through it. I was happy with our set considering our little lay off and the packed house loved it. In all the event raised over £2200 for blood wise and Weston Park cancer charities in the name of the bassist who died of leukaemia in a band our guitarist and drummer were in over 20 years ago.

Things like this make it all worthwhile.

I decided to use my EBMM Sterling on the gig, haven’t used it in years and it didn’t disappoint, made me wonder why I’m selling it.

Or if you don't nail all the audition material then at least demonstrate that you're nearly there and are prepared to put in the effort. When I auditioned for my current band they just sent me a set list of 21 songs but didn't ask me to prepare any of them in particular, so I worked my arse off and made sure I was there or thereabouts with virtually all of them. Apparently it worked because I'm nearly 2 years in now.

I think that's the key mate - show willing.  I had sort of audition for a dep job last year, rock and roll so not really my genre.  I got a list of 35 songs, most in non-original keys.  I worked my ass off to nail them which wasn't easy as many of the lines swam into one in my brain.  Was only foxed by one song which was an odd timing/shuffle/feel type thing but it worked out ok on a second run through.  Got the job but sadly the run of 4 gigs got cancelled.  Still, it's all practice init.

Rule of thumb. Only audition if you completely own the audition material. If you don't cancel your audition .

Be polite to everyone nail the material, keep your mouth shut, pack up and go home.

I'm usually ok with 3 out of 4 of those Blue....

  9. Status Chris Wolstenholme S2.  A very versatile bass, definitely not a one-trick pony.  Bought mine as it ticked the boxes, mostly, and was available quickly just before Rob closed the production on carbon fibre basses.  I'm not a big Muse fan and to be honest with the level of effects CW uses he could use any old bass and get the same sound......opinions may differ.

I think staying out of Bradford is just generally good advice though...

Seriously though, I haven't been into Bradford city centre for probably 15 years, and a lot of our gigs are in the outskirts (sort of Cleckheaton-ish way) but I don't remember it being particularly car-friendly.

I sent a message to a city centre bar in Leeds the other day enquiring after a possible gig, but seeing what they've done to the city centre recently I'm slightly relieved not to have heard back from them.

First time I gigged in Bradford city centre I got hit with 2 tickets in the space of 5 minutes…my satnav had guided me into a bus/taxi lane twice.  Found out later that to do the turn into the venue, in order to miss the ticket you had to travel about half a mile out of the centre to come back in and do a left turn. Joyous…

Yup, we got clobbered recently when we did Sheffield City Hall. If I’m not mistaken, you can’t check

anywhere as to what you owe either, you just pay it or risk a fine when you haven’t paid it. 🤨

Not great is it mate, there’s been a few centre venues looking for acts - must be having an effect. We tend to stay out of city centre now - particularly Bradford 🤬

Paisley has just changed its parking regulations so they'll have the wardens out trying to catch as many folks out before they get used to the new regs. Its a bit of a pain in Paisley as any time i've been there its never been "that" busy. Shame as it could kill off the town centre completely.

I'm always worried about parking at The Cave in the road up to The Bungalow.

    Dave

Same happened in Sheffield Dave, we’ve now crossed city centre off our gig area list - the parking costs were bad enough and venues can’t afford the price hike if we pass it on.

In fairness, it could be that blyn doesn't have a regular gig that suits fretless. I've had a fretless bass sitting around gathering metaphorical dust for some years, but I've only just started using it in anger this year for a few songs with the new neo-prog project we're putting together. Neither of my other bands would work at all with fretless.

Ditto, don't think my fretless would work in a Glam band....

I sold my EBMM Ray fretless and bought a cheaper Saddo Metro Express to free up some cash but still have a fretless for the odd noodle.
