I used my new MIJ Mustang at rehearsal last night. Sounded great though a couple of buts. First I need to get some Ultralite tuners as it was dragging a bit on my shoulder towards the end. Second I really need to put some hours in on the thinner neck, on the more complicated parts of songs my fingers were falling over each other. For years I’ve played Precisions so am used to the wider necks, just got to get used to it which means hours & hours of playing - not a bad thing at all imo.

I found the same with my CIJ Mustang, I was surprised as it was the same weight as my Mikey Way that is well balanced. Ended up selling as it irritated on long sets even with a good strap. Pity, it was a comp stripe and they’re going for silly cash now.

  2. Now updated to a straight sale! The recent acquisition of another shortie has meant one had to go and due to band ‘visuals’ this one has been selected. It’s with a heavy heart but she who must be obeyed has to be considered.

Not really interested in trades unless it’s a Mikey Way Jazz bass.

If there’s any interest I’ll send decent pics but you all know what these look like, it’s in the same road worn condition as I received it and it’s been well looked after by me. Currently fitted with EB 50-105 Hybrid Slinkies and only light use on these. Will also be supplied with the original fitment Fender Flats if wanted.

Only got the original Fender gig bag with this (great condition) so it’s collection or close meet up in Sheffield/Rotherham area only.

Saturday (so not quite last night, sorry) was the very first ever gig for my new project Pop Punk Prty. It was, in my estimation, a little too early to be 'out there' and we all felt very unrehearsed. However, it was better than I expected! If we play like that on our 5th gig I'll be annoyed, but for a first gig I'll take it.

Rig was, my trusty (and suitably pastel green) SB-2 into my HX Stomp. Everyone on IEMs apart from me (I have soundman duties) so I've got one of my QSC wedges. To complete the rig there's genuine 00's baggy jeans that were sourced by my wonderful friends at Tender Hooligan.

    Gosh I'm fat.

    Sounds good to me.

Damn, I’m in Shrewsbury that night Mart - I will get to see your band soon though!
Service Station isn’t a big place but they put on lots of bands, as you say mainly rock

so hope you shake them up a bit! Am sure you’ll be great! all the best. Pete.

Cheers mate, would’ve been nice to see you. Maybe catch up after your ‘retirement’. Not over your way again until August when we’re in Withernsea.

4 min drive to a gig that must have been the perfect gig :laugh1:

Love the wigs along the stage there. :laugh1:

    Dave

We seem to be doing more local gigs at the minute Dave, used to be mainly 1-2hr commutes, not sure why but not complaining. We’re hoping we pick this place up for NYE, that would be perfect.

  6. A very local gig for me last night, only 4 minutes drive (yes I timed it 🤣). Place was a WMC in the next village that’s only just started to have bands back on after a couple years hiatus. It was about 2/3rds full which was nice as it’s a big old place and even 50 people would have made the place look empty. Quite a few people were non regulars who’d seen us at other places in West and South Yorkshire so that was appreciated. One guy brought a small entourage and a selection of wigs and hats in line with our glam theme that he let the masses wear. All in all a decent night, paid more than agreed and promises of more gigs. Next week it’s the middle of Hull….IMG_1449.thumb.jpeg.a58010603982e1195446483a6aa6bc56.jpeg

I’m guessing that Mustangs have better string tension than top loading SS basses? Overall it feels better to me than the SBMM SS Stingray I briefly tried, that had a lovely neck and contours, but the body looked very small on me and the reach to the first fret felt even shorter, it did feel like a glorified kids toy in that regard.

Can't argue with that, I find it much easier to pull the G off the fretboard on my G&L Fallout than on my string through Mustangs.  I've put heavier gauge strings on my (new to me) Lionel and the tension is similar to the Mustangs.

So given I appear to be developing arthritis in the knuckle on the thumb on my left (fretting) hand I’ve noticed playing my JMJ Mustangs a tad painful at times. So tried out my backup Squier CV60s Mustang a lot over the weekend, found the slimmer Jazz width neck much better for this so today picked up a Made In Japan Fender Mustang to be my main gigging bass. Have to put a set of Elixirs on it as it currently has Labella Mustang Flats which aren’t my thing. First impressions are a really nice bass with a very comfortable to play neck.

I find the neck on my Mikey Way mustang to be more comfortable than the JMJ for similar reasons.  If it wasn't for the great sound on the JMJ, which I think is partly down to the chunkier neck I'd consider a swap over.

Oh my, that is exactly the Lionel spec I would choose. If you ever want to move it on, please let me know. I suspect you will enjoy it for many years though!

I'll keep you in mind mate.  I'll be gigging it for a month then I may need to make a choice as I've got 3 other shorties in the stable (JMJ Mustang, Mikey Way Mustang and G&L US Fallout) and 4 is really one too many.

  10. Back in the Sandberg fold after picking up this nice soft core aged Lionel from a fellow basschatter yesterday. Just fitted my strap locks of choice and I’ll pick up some appropriate string’s tomorrow (it’s currently wearing some longscale flats…) and then it’ll be good for next weekends gigs.

Didnt know what to expect on the relicing, it’s very different to my JMJ, doesn’t look artificial at all, similar to how my old 1990 Stingray looked after 15 years of heavy use.IMG_1444.thumb.jpeg.0326f7fa672a2473aa782656a3f70acf.jpeg

I bought this bass today. Luckily I live a bit nearer Perth (area) than perhaps most of you do. Absolutely zero issues and very good condition in general - the seller just probably isn’t a much of a gearhead compared to most Basschat people (he was a bit taken aback when I explained exactly how the controls work, though he had owned it for quite few years). I used borrowed Alembics on two Whitesnake albums and a few other sessions, and owned a new 20th Anniversary model briefly before finances became tight and it had to go.

Good catch, good to see it going to a home where it'll get played rather than become a wall ornament.

I think the Gen 1’s are huge value for money, I’m fairly sure it was only the first batch that was ropey and it can all get sorted out. I really like the new ones but no way am I forming out almost a grand on one - I’ll wait and see if any are going cheaper used in a year, but I think it’s gonna take time for the sales of the new ones to get going as there’s so many cheap decent Gen 1’s about. I know @dub_junkie is a big fan of them Gen 1’s and has said ti me a few times that once you’ve set them up properly they’re absolutely excellent. If I knew how to redo the awful decal I’d probably have 5 of the 1st Gen’s haha 😝

I agree the decal is off putting - shallow I know. I keep intending to do mine but then remember how hopeless I am at detail work. If I could find a local guy to do it for less than £100 I’d get it done.

Wow!! Twice as much as a First Gen.

I'd be inclined to get one of the older ones and take it along to my local luthier to sort out. He wouldn't charge me £400 to put it right.

To be honest if my later made Gen 1 is anything to go by there was very little to fettle. As said before the pre was swapped for a JE but a cheaper option would have been the drop in VTC. Other than a set up, that was it. I’d be hard pushed to see £500 difference to a new model, particularly on the Fretless.

Retrovibe have some vaguely Rick-ish shorty basses in stock.  I got in touch with David and he is currently knocking me up a slightly more Rick-ish version.  Short scale.  Although we recently went off plan for a more blingy black stain, no pickguard, gold hardware look.  Not entirely sure what it will end up like but it should be fun.  :D  This was the last mock up but things seem to be fluid :D

That looks nice, sort of a 4004 vibe, are the pups Humbuckers like the 4004L/4004Cii?  I briefly had a 4004Cii and wasn't that impressed with the sound to be honest - it didn't have the bite of a 4003.  I'm told it improves if the pots are changed though (resistance), the stock pots in the 4004 are just wrong....
