I've noticed a strange thing that happens quite a lot when I play in a folk duo/trio.I normally play in a 4 piece rock and blues type band,but sometimes my services are required for a folk duo that occasionally require some bass back-up.The problem is this: When the guitar player uses a capo in the course of the gig,I notice that my bass is no longer totally in tune with him.Without the capo,we're fine,but as soon as he puts a capo on the 2nd or 3rd fret,I'm no longer exactly in tune.I find myself having to bend notes to stay in tune. Now the guitarist is using a Lowden electro-acoustic,so I doubt very much if there's problems with his intonation,and mine is spot on,so why is there this discrepancy?I also noticed it on another occasion when the guitarist was using an Ovation.Anybody have any ideas?Is my bass at fault,although I have used other basses in the past,and still experienced the same thing.Basses are Squiers.VMJ and Precision 5.

Mine neither.(Indonesia)And neither does it have that routing under the pickguard.I can use mine with the PG off just fine.All there is is a slightly larger than usual/necessary cutout for the neck pickup.

A kind of huge thumb piano?[/quote] Yeah I watched the programme this morning with my 'sounds' on and although it wasn't really tuneful.he was getting some real deep bass from that thing.it seemed to be metal 'prongs' which he twanged with his fingers.They (the prongs) were attached to a large resonator.Probably some W.Indian invention.Not a lot of available notes though,by the look of it. PS,listening to Grinderman as I type this.I honestly do not get this.At all!

[/quote] A good point indeed .I do remember a while back there was something untoward with my sound.I didn't remove the grill that time and thought no more about it,but the more recent episode caused me to take the grill off because I knew there was something badly wrong,and it was only then that I noticed the damage.That would explain everything.Definite food for thought. I'm not going to pay to have them repaired as I've already replaced them,but I'm not averse to a little DIY as MBA suggested.Thanx for your input guys.Much appreciated.

I had a dark green metallic finish Squier P5 some years ago.Sold on this very forum if I remember rightly.My thoughts on it:very very wide neck,but comfortable,not too heavy,a sound of it's own but nothing like the classic Precision.My main gripe was with the original pickups which turned out to be normal J-type 4 pole jobbies which were absolutely useless for a 5-string.I found the low B to be lower in volume than the other 4.I replaced them with Seymour Duncan bar type pups and that helped,but by this time I was fed up with it and sold it on.In my opinion,not a great bass to start a 5-string career with,mainly due to the neck and inferior pups.

David[/quote] In my first post I stated that it was the top 2 drivers,David,but that is an interesting phenomena,right enough.I'm still dubious about the black 'seam' around the separation on the damaged drivers,which the undamaged ones do NOT have.This appears to be a weakspot,caused,in my opinion by the glue or whatever the black stuff is.They are not the original drivers,which I believe would have been Celestion,but have been solid performers up till now.On further reckoning,it would have been actually 15 years ago since they were installed,so I suppose they haven't done too badly,but I'd still like to know why just two have failed.
