1. Nice bass in her hand too... Rob
 2.
I was just joshing. You may have meant 'wailing'. Or maybe not. I prefer 'whaling' though - it's more fun.
Ah curse my rubbish spelling... I tried to find an image to illustrate playing bass in waders and google gave me this... No great disaster.... The world takes all sorts I guess Rob
 3.
Call me Ishmael.
Is that how you spell whaling? it doesn't look quite right... I don't mean I expected him to appear sporting a harpoon and chest waders... Rob
 4.
here is my effort recorded this afternoon https://soundcloud.c...ight-metropolis
Nice effort there, I was expecting a whaling solo to come in at some point... With your solo guitar and my solo bass we almost have a band Rob
 5.
Brain dead at the moment Rob with this one but will have a pop in the next few days, I have been working on a song I wrote and got a bit obsessed, but its finished now, hopefully will get some ideas soon. Really liked the recording you did, sounds great
Plenty of time yet it's only the 4th! Thanks for the comments on soundcloud too, I'm new to it all and its quite nice to have little comments on the track itself. Rob
 6.
Just listened to Rob's and Dad's tracks, like them both, nice one guys
Thanks for checking mine out What are you going for this month? any ideas yet? Still early days I know! Rob
 7.
The results are convincing. For my part (I may be alone in this...), I get distracted by the video component, and find that as a solely audio track, I can 'forget' about the looper. Dumb, I know, and purely psychological (certainly not logical..!). Not to say that the images are not useful in their own right; I would encourage you to continue that route, just the same. Of course, I could always just shut my eyes, I suppose..? Thumb's up for the track, by the way. Skol had better be good, this month..!
I think your right to be honest. Truth is I may be 'hiding' behind the visual component of what I'm trying to do here, pushing that to the forefront to maybe detract from proper arranging... these aren't really songs, more layers I play around with. As I'm now going down the 'audio only' route the music is exposed so to speak... This is of course how it should be and will hopefully drive me onto better arrangements It is a learning experience this writing music lark and hopefully I can learn from this and progress...
Does a laptop count as an instrument, because if it doesn't I believe you have beaten me by 1
In my mind a laptop counts as an instrument. Without getting into the realms of the 'what constitutes an instrument' debate, I would suggest that anything you can make a sound with is technically an instrument. I can appreciate a virtuoso violin performance for its feel and technical prowess and I do believe MIDI falls down slightly when attempting to emulate 'real world' instruments... its a dynamics thing, it just doesn't sound quite right... Having said that though. Composing is composing and to me there is no difference whatsoever in writing a piece on a traditional orchestral instrument, or programming notation into a computer... you are still creating music just using a different medium... Rob
 8.
Rob - I think the better recording and soundcloud have made your composing easier to listen to, the timings and punctuation almost in your playing is beautiful. Having some really serious PC problems in SpaceChick HQ at the moment which has stopped me from doing what I want!! Have a few ideas floating around in my head, none of which will be suitable to do on Garage Band on a IPad 1!! That said, whilst I could get the sounds I want on a PC, doubt I have the technical skills to do it justice anyhow
Thanks Spacechick It was my first attempt at recording with anything other than a video camera... next month I may even use some EQ Its all a bit of a learning curve for me at the moment...
Here's mine. Read the description of it to understand it better https://soundcloud.c...hambasschatbass
That's not at all bad there mate. Like the concept. You've got more instruments in it than I have!
POP , Britney will do for me , in her day yummmm
I though she looked alright bald... Rob
 9. Here's my attempt this month, thought I'd get it in early as I'm not sure how much time I'll have later on. https://soundcloud.com/robhartley-1/pastrami-on-rye-wav Hopefully that came out as a link? Recorded this last night onto a little pocket multitracker as its slightly higher quality than my usual youtube shenanigans... Bluesy wine bar feel to this one and still solo bass. I may still do a video, I'm undecided as yet... anyway here it is for now. Rob
 10.
Good morning, all... Here's my modest contribution to the fray... https://soundcloud.c...ud-city/s-2f4zZ ...'composed' in my armchair. As SC for last month, be aware that this is a world's first; your indulgence is craved in all aspects. I would simply add that I'm more a drummer than a bassist, but I think you'll guess that..! Comments welcome, but I would recommend the use of *@§§*@$%%%* rather than explicite swear words, as this is supposed to be a family forum. Thanks in advance; enjoy... (Quake in your boots, Skol, the honeymoon is over... )
Good effort there suits the picture really well. Rob
 11.
Pop is a tricky one Lurks. As a genre it gets bashed constantly by us, ahem, serious musos But it's got super-high production values and writing a catchy hook is something of Holy Grail. I personally love pop music. It's my guilty pleasure! If you want some good reference material check out Britney around her 'Toxic' period (that sentence sounds so massively wrong…). Seriously. Purely in production terms, it's top notch. So that's my advice mate. Listen to Britney! Bet that's never been said to you before, eh. Edit: here you go...
There is sound in this video? I've never noticed... In all seriousness though I always kinda liked this tune... I'd take this over X factor crap anyday. Rob
 12.
Never bothered Steve Harris
This made me chuckle... What is that gallop thing he does... triplets? I must experiment more with rhythm, seem to spend all my time concentrating on making sure melody, bassline and chords all work together in the same key then I just plonk it in 4/4. Must explore a bit with this months attempt I think.
 13. I came up with the bare bones of something for this last night... I was fairly pleased with it however I've just realized that it has the EXACT same rhythm as one of my other pieces. Totally different tonality but an identical plucking pattern. I shall have to go back to the drawing board and be a little more original... Rob
 14. It’s pretty obvious to anyone that the vast majority of bass players are male (and as a result the Basschat community is also a male dominated environment). I have seen very few female bass players in bands so I can’t really comment on that, but I do see a lot on Youtube (like this clip). It is of course, only in fairly recent times that gender politics and equality in this country have improved to a level where men or women can choose whatever occupations / past times they like without fear of ridicule or persecution. We’ve a way to go, but we have made progress… the whole feminist ‘everything is against us’ approach is ridiculous in this day and age (in this country) and such militant views are counterproductive and detract from the real areas of equality we still need to address. Slowly but surely more and more women are now taking up bass playing, football and other traditionally ‘male’ interests. Obviously with professional players there is no difference between the skills of a male or a female bass player, there is nothing genetic that would make a man a better player. However I would say that the standard of playing from the female bass players I see on Youtube is lower than the men. But… bear with me before you tear me down… I believe that’s because of the exposure and who’s viewing the videos. Many men will happily watch a video of a pretty girl irrelevant of her level of playing skill. There is a video of a girl playing a series of covers on Youtube - Jade something or other she is called. Now she’s competent enough technically but certainly nothing to write home about. She is however attractive... She has a million views and over 25’000 subscribers. Is this an accurate reflection of her bass playing skill? Would a middle aged balding fat guy playing these covers have the same level of interest? Jade herself is not to blame for this of course. I’m just using her as an example of why female bass players may appear to be less skilled than guys. It’s because many of the female bass players that get exposure are attractive as opposed to talented. I think Basschat is a much more objective environment than Youtube though. If you saw last month’s composition competition you will have seen that Spacechick came a very commendable second. This was a blind listening test and nothing whatsoever to do with image. Her piece was successful because of the popularity of her composition, nothing to do with what she looks like. This just goes to prove, that when everything else is put to one side. In our community, be you a girl or a guy… it’s the quality of your playing that really counts. Rob
 15.
Can't wait to hear/see? your next entry, Rob! I'm trying to create my own composition this month, but being pretty much limited to midi instruments and also being an absolute beginner at programming midi instruments, and know very little theory other than what's relevant to guitar or bass, this make take a long long time, and still sound absolutely crap. Also, most the midi instruments just sound like a piano that sounds a bit like a bass, or a guitar. They don't actually ever sound like a bass or a guitar.
I've started to cook something up tonight... I may even record it properly I see Bilbo has already responded... and he is of course correct. Theory is theory I would imagine the main advantage of midi is that you can compose an excellent horn section without a single puffed out cheek in sight...
Bat Out of Hull? Highway to Hull? Hull Awaits? ...I'll just get me coat.
Those are a superb effort, on a similar note. The day you don't win this competition Hull will freeze over.... Rob
 16.
I feel like there should be an iron main cover band that sings "Run to the Hull".
I don't think anybody in their right mind would be running TOWARDS Hull... Anyway I've gone off waffling again on the competition thread haven't I... I'll shut up now. nearly home time! Rob
 17.
Holidays from Hull!
When I was about 13 some of my mates were in a Pantera tribute band call 'Cowboys from Hull'
 18.
I know it's not Neath, I don't think we have over a two story building, and we've only just got electricity in Wales
I've never had the pleasure of visiting Neath. I understand it's still horse and cart over those parts though? I have however visited Hull many times throughout my youth... I still shudder now thinking about it... Rob
 19. Congrats Skol / Urb and the gang. Another superb effort. 77 votes... what a great turnout.
 20. Monday morning late for work bump... I've had a couple of offers to send couriers etc... I'm looking for someone to pop round and pick it up to be honest. I don't want to have to source a box, find some bubble wrap and wait around for a courier to pick it up for £95....
 21. Dropped the price to try and move this on before a trip to bass direct next weekend. Pick up from London only. Sorry if this counts as a bump (I did change the price) Someone tell me if i'm breaking the rules.
