It always seemed to me that the "Justin Chancellor Factor" had a massive effect on the prices, but that may have just been coincidence with the timing of the brand relaunch and his emergence as a bass demi-god.
Can't say he had too much influence on me buying a Wal having only found out who he was a couple of months ago... If I'm entirely honest I wouldn't say his tone has that much to do with the Wal anyway... sounds to me like any active bass with new strings through a sansamp?
Back in the jazz club
Look at that... I've always thought natural / maple with blocks is a wonderful combination

Can someone delete that for me it was nether helpful or on topic... must have got out of the wrong side of bed this morning 😕 Apologies.
...favouring neck or bridge pickups, whether I use a pick or fingers, the placment of same - near the neck, bridge or in the middle and how hard I pick or pluck makes the differences in tone I need depending on what I playing.
Very much this... there's huge variation to be had without any knob tweaking whatsoever. Get a good core tone you're happy with and IMO all the subtle differences you could even need are there with a slight change in technique. ... obviously this only works if you use a clean "traditional" bass sound for the full set. Those who use an effects heavy set up to get what they need are going to struggle to get synthy octave fuzz sounds with a change of plucking position 😕

Release the damn thing already so someone can tell me if it's remotely gigable... I never really liked the signature trace tone of old so I'm not bothered if it sounds nothing like that. What I am bothered about though is the potential to carry a gigable amp in the front pocket of my gigbag. Portability trumps everything else for me as I travel to my gigs on public transport. If this sounds anyway near half way decent and more importantly is loud enough it'll change my gigging life for the better.

100% happy with my tone Well the portion of it I can control anyway, 99% of what the audience hears is down to the FOH sound guy at my gigs and not a whole lot I can do about that. I give him a DI straight from the bass and hope for the best. Fortunately I've yet to be presented with anything unuseably crap... some gigs are better than others though. I have found the tone I always hear in my head when I imagine myself playing bass. It wouldn't work for everyone, but why would it? We all want our bases to sound the way we personally think works best for the music that we play. There isn't a single universally agreed "best" tone that trumps all others for all players in every situation. I don't regret the journey to get here though...It was good fun trying out different bases until I found what I as looking for

Glad I have BC to share my excitement... Mrs C / work colleagues / people on the bus don't seem overly interested
D-Day! I'm excited for you Rob.
I'm ridiculously excited... Unfortunately I can't get down there until Tuesday so the wait continues...

So... It's ready...
-
I'd expect to be told about it but it seems a reasonable fee for photos etc. Bass Direct aren't in business for fun...

What's a P-bass? This guy will tell you :)

We have a guy at work who is this enthusiastic about everything... you can tell how long everyone else has been at the company by how far their desks are away from his 😐 -
I understand Radiohead enough to know I don't like them... 😐 I think there is a tendency whenever someone dislikes a band you're passionate about (whoever that may be, I dont mean to single out Radiohead) to think that the other party just doesn't understand the music. More often than not understanding the music isn't the issue... they understand perfectly they just think it's crap 😐
-
Chiming in on the playing left handed thing from a position of no knowledge whatsoever (in traditional BC fashion)... if you're coming to guitar (or bass) from an absolute standing start the tendency is to think that you will need your strongest hand for the whizzing around the neck bit and so you end up thinking it needs to be played the opposite way round. ... my sole basis for this theory is that mrs C plays left handed air bass 😐 With regards to taking up the bass, is the intention to play in a band? With an handful of notable exceptions, bass isn't really a solo instrument... might be better off with guitar if the intention is to noodle away at home
I'd probably sell any of them if the right offer was made.
I think that's the bottom line here... I've no intention of selling my Wals (or ever playing anything else for that matter), but I still wouldn't turn down a ridiculous offer. ... everything has a price they say.
Great choice of facing wood.
It's lovely isn't it... is it Birdseye? So much variation in Wals. Paul has an incredible eye for detail regardless of whether you want something subtle or full on coffee table.

I do agree to a certain extent that some people just have it and if you haven't, trying too hard looks even worse than not trying at all... it's very easy to look like muppet. However as has been mentioned a couple of times already, if you don't have it, working out what it is your doing wrong (video is ideal) and making small changes can go a long way. I am the least cool person imaginable and I have absolutely zero natural stage presence, but even I force myself into looking cheerful and moving around a bit. It really does make a big difference to how the band looks on stage and is worth spending a bit of time on if you're not a natural. Standing dead still doing the "too cool for school" thing might seem like a good idea. But in really it just makes you look like you think you're a bit special.

Wow that is quite something...

I really don't like VVT... I need control over the volume live and it's impossible to turn up or down on the fly without changing the tone with a VVT set up.
I'd certainly like to visit but I think that Mk3 demo bass you refer to was sold last year. Dangerous to visit though...because if I ordered a new fretted MK3 that means two years of hard saving plus digging into existing savings...or selling my car or a kidney or two. At £5500 for the standard model it's nudged into that area I consider overpriced - especially as they are made like bolt-on Fenders without angled headstocks. Incredible pickups and electronics and well built of course but now a bit too pricey IMO.
To be fair I think you'd still sound appreciably better than the rest of us with a bit of 2 by 4 strung up with chIcken wire... 😕
Thanks, that looks the biz to me.
Me too... fretted mk1 for me next i think unless I can get Paul to make me a JG with the leather scratch plate 😮
I'm stoked I just today got an email off Philip showing me a selection of woods I could choose for mine
It's such a hard choice! I spent hours looking at slightly different bits of wood agonising over a decision. Of course any of them would have done fine! I think in the event of any future builds I'll just get Paul to decide for me
-
What wood is that?
It's Maple with a bit of quilting, a bit of burl and a touch of spalting... Quite a unique piece. Glad I went for it, youre never quite sure when the time comes to choose facings... spoilt for choice I wanted something lighter coloured to complliment my fretted ziricote six.
HOT DAMN! Thank you for switching your image hosting provider, your pictures are important to us.
For some reason they seem to have started charging to host images for 3rd party sites... bizarre as several others let you do this for nothing
P.S. Off topic, but my 6 string fretless headless isn't too far away now, although you've definitely beaten me to the punch!
Great stuff, looking forward to some pics
