Sounds like he has confidence issues. If he thinks everything is too loud he needs ear plugs. More likely though is the confidence. At rehearsal get the lead guitarist and vocals to drop out leaving just you rhythm boys and get everyone to listen to it. Try to get him in balance. At the end of the day though if he can't cut the mustard he's dead weight

It's better if you can get them up high as then they don't dazzle you so much

I suppose a lot of it is down to how the guitar makes you feel. The same as playing with a clean or distorted sound. I feel different when playing my Ric, Thunderbird or Precision.

Squier P-bass Special . Jazz neck, Precision body, PJ pups and cheap as chips. I fitted SD Quarter Pound pups in about 15 mins -> monster bass and still dead cheap

I've played in a trio for years mainly due to the economics. I have a day job but the guitarist doesn't. He plays with other bands to make the core of his money. However we have a general rule that the pub needs to pay a reasonable amount or we don't take the gig. Places that we really enjoy playing we might do for slightly less, but usually it's got to be at least £70 a man - and an even split

I went for DMX mainly to synchronise the colour washes as my cheap PARs don't do master-slave, but it looks cool to have the stage dimly lit during breaks at the touch of a button too.

Someone was selling some powered Mackie 450s on here. A pair of those with a mixing desk are ideal for small venues. Much easier than lugging a power amp around!

I've had a Peavey Databass combo for about 20 years now. Every now and then I think about getting something else, but it's been so reliable and sounds great. I've had to re-cone it a couple of times just through general wear and tear - the last time the braided cables wore out and can't be re-soldered. It's a 450W 1x15 combo that slots neatly into the boot of my car. It's not the lightest of amps but has been gigged extensively and doesn't owe me a penny. Colour me GAS-free!

I've just bought a new toy - a Chauvet Mini Kinta. It's a compact LED wide-angle moonflower type of light and a brilliant (ooh - nice pun!) bit of kit for the money. I can't wait to try it out at a gig. It got me wondering what other bands use. Anyway, my lighting kit for our pub covers band is: Stairville (Thomann) DMX Master-1 controller 4 of their cheap PAR-56 DMX cans Plus the one I've just bought I assume that a lot of you will be responsible for lighting (and probably everything else too!), so what do you use? DMX? LEDs? Do you have a lighting engineer or fly it yourself?

If you want a very general answer, Jazzes tend to have slimmer necks and a more 'burpy' sound, Precisions have a wider neck and a more 'thumpy' sound. Now go search on YouTube (No offense intended!)

I've got one of these (Squier Indonesian P-bass Special). I used the standard pups for a while - they are actually not that bad. However a couple of weeks ago I swapped then out for a P/J set of SD QPs. 10 minute job with the soldering iron, straight swap, no fettling required and the sound is now HUGE. The output on the SD pups is so hot, I've had to lower them a fair bit to get them somewhere close to the output of my other basses. It's a gorgeous bass that still only stands me at about £250 all in
